  1. 'Iraola is a very good manager'published at 11:35 GMT 10 November 2023

Bournemouth v Newcastle (Sat, 17:30 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe on Bournemouth and manager Andoni Iraola: "He is a very good manager. I have watched Bournemouth a lot in the build-up to this game. There set-up is very good and they have good players. They have invested a lot of money into their squad so we know we are in for a tough game. We have a lot of experience at that stadium and it is a very difficult place to go."

On returning again to Bournemouth: "The focus is always on the players and on our performance and how well we can approach the game. That is always my wish, it is never about me. The only focus is to win."

"I will always care about Bournemouth after spending good times at that club. But when you are playing against them we will do everything in our power to win."

  2. 'My options are restricted'published at 11:22 GMT 10 November 2023

Bournemouth v Newcastle (Sat, 17:30 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe on 10 players missing due to injury and suspension: "The big thing is that I back the players and the squad. The biggest challenge is in-game running. My options are restricted which will have the biggest impact on us at the moment.

"I can't credit the players who are fit and available enough. The way they have attacked the games. You look at Arsenal, the only disappointment was the VAR situation overshadowed our performance.

"The thing from Dortmund to take is that if we would have played to our very maximum levels we could have won that game but we didn't. We got to take control of that ourselves and not look external."

On VAR: "I was reluctant to VAR initially coming in. I was more in favour of letting the referee have the power to make decisions. One of my big things is when players score you risk that instant high of scoring and celebrating getting taken away - that sits uncomfortably with me.

"But I think there has been real benefits with VAR that work. But my big thing is when a game ends it should be about the players and football from what we have seen."

  3. Miley will have a 'prominent role' in futurepublished at 11:14 GMT 10 November 2023

Bournemouth v Newcastle (Sat, 17:30 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe on Lewis Miley becoming their youngest player to appear in Europe: "He is certainly going to have a prominent role on our future generally. You can see against Dortmund the way he came into the game for someone so young it was hugely impressive.

"At that moment we were trying to chase the game. He used the ball well and looked good physically after his illness, I was really pleased with him."

On current form: "The players have done incredibly well especially after such a difficult start which we knew it would be when we looked at the fixtures. We were close in those games but didn't get the results we wanted.

"It has been another intense period were the players have been stretched physically and mentally so I have to complement them again in our performance. We lost the two games to Dortmund but they weren't one-sided games."

On a temporary ban on loaning players from teams under the same ownership and if it is because rival clubs are worried: "I wouldn’t know the motives behind the changes. We just have to react to the rules as they come in."

On if he would sign players from Saudi Arabia if allowed: "I'm open to signing anyone if they are good enough and make our team better."

  4. Wilson to be assessed ahead of weekendpublished at 11:07 GMT 10 November 2023

Bournemouth v Newcastle (Sat, 17:30 GMT)

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe on Callum Wilson being picked for England after injury concerns: "Gareth [Southgate] and England will be in constant communication – like we are with all our international players – to make sure they are well managed at all times.

"He will be assessed ahead of the weekend."

On return of Alexander Isak: "We are building up his load and making sure he is robust enough to return. His groin at the moment feels good and he is on plan to return after the international break.

On Sven Botman's injury: "No update. He is progressing well and had specialist treatment in Holland."

On Harvey Barnes returning: "He has just started running and fingers crossed another one back after the international break. Certainly wouldn't be too far away."

On his two year anniversary in charge of Newcastle: "It has gone by in a flash. But when you look back on that two years it has been an amazing period of time in my life and everyone connected with Newcastle. It has been a brilliant two years.

"I am still football obsessed, driven and really enjoying the experience."

  5. Carsley names England men's U21 squadpublished at 10:59 GMT 10 November 2023

    England

Before we hear from Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, here's the 24-man squad that England men’s under-21s coach Lee Carsley has named for their U21 Euro qualifiers against Serbia and Northern Ireland.

Goalkeepers: Matthew Cox (Bristol Rovers, loan from Brentford), Sam Tickle (Wigan Athletic), James Trafford (Burnley)

Defenders: Jarrad Branthwaite (Everton), Charlie Cresswell (Leeds United), Taylor Harwood-Bellis (Southampton, loan from Manchester City), Bashir Humphreys (Swansea City, loan from Chelsea), Tino Livramento (Newcastle United), Brooke Norton-Cuffy (Millwall, loan from Arsenal), Jarell Quansah (Liverpool), Josh Wilson-Esbrand (Stade de Reims, loan from Manchester City)

Midfielders: Harvey Elliott (Liverpool), Hayden Hackney (Middlesbrough), Rico Lewis (Manchester City), James McAtee (Sheffield United, loan from Manchester City), Tyler Morton (Hull City, loan from Liverpool), Cole Palmer (Chelsea), Charlie Patino (Swansea City, loan from Arsenal)

Forwards: Jamie Bynoe-Gittens (Borussia Dortmund), Liam Delap (Hull City, loan from Manchester City), Sam Iling-Junior (Juventus), Noni Madueke (Chelsea), Jaden Philogene (Hull City), Jonathan Rowe (Norwich City)

  6. 'I think Quansah goal was rightly ruled out'published at 10:53 GMT 10 November 2023

    Toulouse 3-2 Liverpool

Condemnation of Liverpool's disallowed goal was not universal, though.

Former England goalkeeper Rachel Brown-Finnis told TNT Sports: "It was a great finish by Jarell Quansah, who thought he had equalised, but I think it was rightly ruled out in the end.

"He showed real determination to get his side back in the game, but it is a handball."

And Reds boss Jurgen Klopp had to grudgingly admit Liverpool's own defensive failings had played the primary role in his side's defeat in France.

"I am a bit more concerned that I would have loved us to have played better, to be honest. That's my main issue tonight," he said.

"In the end we were intense, we threw everything in, but the problem is in a football game you have to make the decisive things in the right moment to do them right."

  7. VAR 'disgrace' as Reds denied last-gasp equaliserpublished at 10:49 GMT 10 November 2023

    Toulouse 3-2 Liverpool

Liverpool were involved in more VAR drama at Toulouse last night after Jarell Quansah thought he had equalised with his first Reds goal deep into stoppage time.

Bulgarian referee Georgi Kabakov had already pointed to the centre circle, seemingly indicating 'check complete' - but then was called to the VAR screen, and subsequently disallowed the goal.

Several phases earlier in the move, the ball had ricocheted off Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister's chest into his arm.

"I only saw the video back now and for me it's not a handball - but how can I decide that?" said Reds boss Jurgen Klopp.

Former Liverpool players were angered, including Steve McManaman on television co-commentary, while Sky pundit Jamie Carragher reposted his own comment on X from Wednesday night, describing VAR as a "disgrace".

  8. Media should 'respect managers and not put them in those positions'published at 10:41 GMT 10 November 2023

West Ham v Nottingham Forest (Sun, 14:00 GMT)

    West Ham United

And finally from David Moyes, the West Ham boss was asked about VAR: "When we're putting our opinions over, they're not getting a lot of clout at the other end. A couple of incidents have been highlighted but it's mainly been the top clubs, as if it doesn't happen to the other clubs. I think we're all pretty disappointed with what we're getting back.

"Managers will be fined for speaking out of turn. I can get fined. We're being asked within 20 minutes after games about things that can get us fined and in trouble. I would ask journalists to respect the managers and not put them in those positions.

"Managers have to be defensive, sit back and not share our true feelings because we're asked questions where we know we're going to be fined if we speak out. If you want honest opinions, you need to take that up with others. Now and again you'll get outbursts and maybe that's what you want."

  9. Moyes doesn't yet know if signings are needed to cover Afcon absenteespublished at 10:37 GMT 10 November 2023

West Ham v Nottingham Forest (Sun, 14:00 GMT)

    West Ham United

West Ham boss David Moyes said it is too early to know if defender Kurt Zouma will be available for Sunday's game.

On Ghana winger Mohammed Kudus and the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, Moyes added: "Bits of his play have been very, very good. I'm looking for him to be more creative.

"Mo has made a big impact and he's settling into the Premier League. He's got a few goals and I think the crowd know how well he's doing.

"We have been talking about it and three or four players possibly going away, but I don't know if it will mean we sign more players [in January]. We'll work out how many games they will potentially miss and plan from there."

  10. Ward-Prowse is 'a great lad and has settled in quickly'published at 10:33 GMT 10 November 2023

West Ham v Nottingham Forest (Sun, 14:00 GMT)

    West Ham United

Midfielder James Ward-Prowse has impressed at West Ham since joining from Southampton in the summer but was again left out of the England squad on Thursday.

Hammers boss David Moyes said: "He's a great lad and has settled in quickly. From my side, I hope he keeps playing well, setting up goals and scoring.

"I think Gareth Southgate has done a great job and he's got a lot of good players to choose from, including James."

  11. Hammers giving European campaign 'a really good go'published at 10:29 GMT 10 November 2023

West Ham v Nottingham Forest (Sun, 14:00 GMT)

    West Ham United

On West Ham's latest European win, David Moyes added: "Sometimes people think it's easy to win these games but there are no easy games in Europe. Unless you're in the seat in the dugout, it's hard for people to know what it's like. This is the toughest group we've had, but we got the victory.

"It's very difficult to be playing games as regularly as this, but everyone wants to be in Europe. If you're in the Champions League you can be lucky enough to have Tuesday-Sunday or Tuesday-Saturday, but in these competitions you are always Thursday-Sunday. We've giving it a really good go."

  12. Every game is really important - Moyespublished at 10:26 GMT 10 November 2023

West Ham v Nottingham Forest (Sun, 14:00 GMT)

    West Ham United

West Ham boss David Moyes is now speaking to the media and, on playing Forest this Sunday, added: "Every game is really important and you have to win. We'll have to play well. Nottingham Forest are a decent team and had a good result last week (beating Aston Villa 2-0).

"We've had a couple of tough results, but we beat Arsenal in the cup and won last night. Of course the Premier League is important, but we've also had some really good wins in there as well.

"[Forest boss] Steve Cooper has done a brilliant job and looks as if he's building on it this year. Steve has brought in a lot of new players as he did last season and he's doing well."

West Ham made it nine European home wins on the bounce last night.

Lucas Paqueta provided the moment of quality to secure a Europa League win against Olympiakos, meaning they only need two points from their final two matches to secure a place in the knockout phase.

However, with four points from seven games, David Moyes' side have slid into the bottom half of the Premier League and face a fully-rested Nottingham Forest at London Stadium on Sunday.

"It is hugely important to get the best results we can in the Premier League," said Moyes.

"To play Thursday-Sunday is tough. In this group of matches between internationals, we have had three teams (in the Premier League) who have had free weeks to prepare, while we have had cup competitions and Europe."

  15. I don't want players thinking we've qualified - Clementpublished at 10:16 GMT 10 November 2023

    Rangers 2-1 Sparta Prague

    Rangers

Rangers' Europa League win over Sparta Prague on Thursday leaves them second in Group C, two points behind Real Betis and three clear of Sparta, with two games to play.

Victory at home to Aris Limassol in their next game will secure their progression to the knockout stages.

Manager Philippe Clement said: "If there's one thing I don't want it's the players thinking we're now qualified."

  16. 'I'm really happy that the synergy is back' - from jeers to cheers for Gerspublished at 10:07 GMT 10 November 2023

    Rangers 2-1 Sparta Prague

    George O'Neill
    BBC Sport Scotland

It is not long since Rangers' season looked to be borderline unsalvageable.

They were roundly booed from the Ibrox pitch after defeat by Aberdeen at the end of September, their third league defeat in their first seven games, and a result that ultimately cost Michael Beale his job.

That was followed by a dismal showing away to Aris Limassol in the Europa League under caretaker boss Steven Davis, where confidence among the players appeared to have hit rock bottom.

When Philippe Clement was appointed as Beale's successor, he looked to have an almost impossible job on his hands, but in less than four weeks he has transformed the mood in Govan.

A superb first-half performance at home against Sparta Prague earned the Belgian his fifth win from his first six games in charge, after which the same players that were booed under Beale were cheered to the rafters and applauded down the tunnel.

"[Getting the fans on side] is maybe the most satisfying thing from this evening, because it's crucial," said Clement. "When it was not the case, maybe we would not have the energy to fight to the end. It's a big strength of this club, and I'm really happy that the synergy is back - I look forward to having a lot of evenings like this."

  17. Palace midfielder Eze signs new contractpublished at 10:01 GMT 10 November 2023

    Crystal Palace

Eberechi Eze has signed a new three-and-a-half year contract with Crystal Palace.

The deal takes the 25-year-old midfielder through to 2027 and is a big boost to Palace after Eze had entered into the final two years of his contract.

Eze, who made his debut for England in June, signed for Palace from Queens Park Rangers in deal worth £19.5m in 2020.

He was the club's top goalscorer last season, with 10 in the Premier League as well as four assists.

Treble winners Manchester City had shown an interest in signing him during the summer.

Attempting to conduct his post-match interview in a media tent outside Stadium de Toulouse, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was annoyed by the noise of the home fans.

"We were as organised as this press conference - pretty chaotic," said a visibly angry Klopp, as Toulouse supporters chanted and banged on the tent.

The bedlam left Klopp struggling to hear questions or translations from the interpreter, after Uefa allowed the media conference to take place outside the ground.

It provided a fitting coda to a deeply infuriating evening for Klopp, who had seen his Liverpool side stunned in Toulouse.

"We were not aggressive enough," he said. "We gave balls easily away. Real mistakes.

"With all the possession you have obviously you should create more but you cannot concede three goals here, that makes no sense. They fought harder and it was deserved. Congratulations to Toulouse.

"You can play as good as you want but if you don't win decisive battles you have no chance in football."

  20. Villa learning how to win in Europe - Emerypublished at 09:41 GMT 10 November 2023

    Aston Villa 2-1 AZ Alkmaar

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery says his side is learning how to win in Europe after their victory over AZ Alkmaar in the Conference League. The club last competed in Europe 13 years ago.

"The reaction after we conceded [the game's first goal] was fantastic," said Emery.

"We have to be strong and take experiences like tonight to know how to win in Europe against really good teams.

"I'm very happy because when we are winning a game like this we can understand this competition better and the processes we're trying to build.

"I'm very proud of our work in this competition. We're getting better."
