The official team sheet here at Fir Park has Ryan McGowan as the St Johnstone captain. He's not, it's Liam Gordon, as per. Cheeky wee mind games from the Motherwell office, as they look for anything that can help get them that elusive win? Or just a listing error?

Decent crowd braving awful rainy and windy conditions in Lanarkshire, with the home fans well aware what's at stake, not having seen their side win at Fir Park, amazingly, since 26 August (they beat Killie that day, for the anoraks who need to know).

Here we go again...

Philippe Clement explains that 12 games in 37 days "is the reason Conor Goldson doesn't start today".

The Rangers manager tells BBC Scotland the stalwart centre-half is fit, "he feels good, but we have a lot of games still to come".

"John Souttar has done well in training and when he has come in," Clement says.

Another player being given "a breather" is Ross McCausland, with Rangers' manager saying he does not want the 20-year-old winger to suffer burn-out after impressing recently.

Clement admits that injuries to Danilo and Tom Lawrence is "a blow", especially as the pair "were in a good spell and they felt good, but it gives a chance to other players and to show themselves".

The manager adds that it will be up to others to judge whether he was right to make changes against visitors who he expects to be "tough opponents who will "park the bus" and play on the counter-attack.

You wouldn't know St Mirren are immersed in a bit of a slump, manager Stephen Robinson is in good spirits... even up for a bit of a laugh and refusing to tell me his formation today. "That's a job for Sportscene..."

As long as the players have a rough idea where they're supposed to be, that's all that matters, really.

Fans are mulling it over, I could be kind and go and give them the steer he gave me, that the 3-5-2 remains, but surely they'll enjoy the surprise more at kick-off. Plus, it gives them something to concentrate on, rather than the dreich conditions here in Paisley...

St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson tells BBC Scotland his side will continue to keep things familiar tactically.

"We don’t change our formation too much, because we believe in what we are doing. We’ll give Thierry [Small] a chance at right wing-back because we’ve had two injuries to Ryan Flynn and Ryan Strain."

Asked about the exclusion of midfielder Keanu Baccus, Robinson says: "I just think the boys have done well. Caolon [Boyd-Munce] has been excellent, very creative. Greg Kiltie has been one of my best midfielders all season and Mark O’Hara is the captain of this club. There's a lot of competition for places.

"Keanu is a fantastic player, but he’s travelled halfway around the world a lot recently so he's been jaded in certain games. Keanu can still bring energy in the closing stages of the game."

In his five games in charge of Saints so far, Craig Levein has two wins, a draw and two defeats. A start he describes as 'okay'. He's going with Kane and Jaiyesimi up front this afternoon, perhaps sensing Motherwell's proclivity these days to concede.

Also interesting to note that St Johnstone's record here in Lanarkshire is decent - they've won on their past two visits with an aggregate of 4-1.

Livingston manager David Martindale tells BBC Scotland: "We're going to need everyone to get us out the situation we are.

"We need to stop conceding the goals we've been conceding. If you can't defend your box, you're always going to be in trouble.

"The league suggests we're in a bad problem, but I know we have enough in the changing room.

"It's probably been a crisis since the start of the year. It's a crisis every year. It's just about, by matchday 38, making sure the club is still in the Premiership."

Hearts manager Steven Naismith tells BBC Scotland: "Every game merits an individual look and I'll pick the best players for that game. The three games in a week as well, it helps to make some changes.

"I think it'll be an open game, it's a tough place to come. But we're confident at the moment because we've been on a good run and the way we're playing and what we expect from the team, everyone is understanding it."

Aberdeen manager Barry Robson tells BBC Scotland bringing Jack Milne is about keeping the side fresh.

"We've had a lot of games and we've had a few niggles so we're freshening it up a bit," he said.

"Angus [Macdonald] did well but it's a bit hard for him to go again today. We've gone for a bit more speed in the backline against a Hearts side who have good players up the top end of the pitch.

"We hope we can keep a clean sheet."

Asked about being under pressure, Robson says: "There's always focus on the manager's position. That's never going to change. My concern is the players and putting performances on for the fans.

"We need to turn performances into results. When we do things right in both boxes we've got a chance to do that.

"I know what I signed up for and I'm concentrating on trying to win the game."

St Johnstone manager Craig Levein tells BBC Scotland: "It's been okay so far - that's about the strength of it. We've had some good matches in which I've learned a lot about the players. We've never been out of any of the games, that's pleasing. The work-rate has been good, some of the football has been really good. But we're rolling up the sleeves here, it's a bit of a scrap.

"It seems like everybody is under pressure these days. Stuart's doing a fantastic job, did so last year. They've had a tricky period but there's very little patience around for managers. They're in the same boat as us, fighting to stay in the division. I've got a great deal of empathy for anyone brave enough to do this job."

And, on Chris Kane and Diallang Jaiyesimi, Levein added: "They've been doing well in training, it's a combination we haven't worked on loads but in theory, the type of players that they are, they should be able to work together. They give us a more potent threat in the final third."

Home boss Stuart Kettlewell won't prioritise one game over another but it's more than three months since his side last tasted victory - this is surely a 'must win' for the Steelmen.

Four points from their past available 36 is nowhere near good enough - and in Dingwall in midweek, they were two down in 18 minutes, causing Kettlewell to make big changes at half-time.

They need to start well, get the fans onside and basically do whatever it takes to claim their first win since Sunday 3 September.

Motherwell manager Stuart Kettlewell tells BBC Scotland: "I genuinely believe that if I start to put more emphasis on this game than any others, then I'm cheating people.

"There's been loads of aspects that haven't been good enough from us, as a team. We must give that wee bit more, not in terms of running or tackles made, but being switched on to moments in the game.

"We need to try and get that first goal. It's what's between the ears, the decisions we make, the confidence from within, the belief we can get out of this run. That's what I'm zoning in on.

"I made three changes at half-time on Tuesday, rightfully so. A number of players could've come off. It would be naïve of me to pick the same team and hope for a different outcome."

Ross County manager Derek Adams tells BBC Scotland: "It was a very good win against Motherwell, to win 3-0 at home was really important for us as they are a team around us in the table. We were able to leapfrog them into a good position. We could have scored more on the night, it was a fantastic performance.

"St Mirren have changed it about a wee bit up front today, and in midfield, and at the back. The personnel will be different but the system will be the same. We will be on our guard against them because they've done well this season but it's an opportunity for us to close the gap between us and them to three points today.

"We come here and play the same way. We press them and force them into mistakes. We’ve shown in the last three games how well we have done that and we’ll need to do that again today."

Rangers don't have their injuries to seeks but manager Philippe Clement says he's a glass half-full kind of guy so is seeing this as opportunities for others to show what they can do. One such player is Cyriel Dessers, whom he wants to see working hard.

Consistency is the name of the game for Dundee as they only make one change from last time out. Ricki Lamie in, Owen Beck is out through injury. Tony Docherty is asking his players to be brave at Ibrox. He'll be hoping to avoid another 5-0 defeat.

Managers like Motherwell's Stuart Kettlewell and Aberdeen's Barry Robson are under pressure but there is actually one team - Livingston - with a worse record than either Well or the Dons over the past five games while St Mirren are only performing as well as Motherwell over the same period.

The improvement in Ross County and St Johnstone under new management is clear to see while Dundee continue to impress following promotion.

And Edinburgh clubs Hearts and Hibernian are both in decent form at a crucial stage of the season, despite midweek defeats. Rangers are the only unbeaten team on this list but are only one point better off than Hearts.

Jim McIntyre takes charge of Arbroath for the first time today with a home game against Greenock Morton.
