A historic night for Girona, who record their first ever La Liga win over Barcelona in style.

And it could have greater implications in the title race.

Although there is still a long way to go, their fans will certainly be dreaming of a remarkable title triumph tonight...

What about Barcelona?

Xavi's side are seven points off the pace - but it is not for a want of trying.

Barcelona attempted 31 shots in this game - the highest total for any team in a single match in La Liga this season.

But despite appearing in control for large parts of the match, they have fallen to defeat and are left with plenty to think about.

With 16 games played, Girona are top in Spain.

Just one defeat this season, to second-placed Real Madrid.

But surely, if they were not already, they must be taken seriously now after beating Barcelona at the (temporary) home of the defending champions.

A deserved player of the match award for Miguel Gutierrez, who was absolutely terrific this evening - as were the rest of his team-mates - and scored that important second goal before half-time.

Into the eighth minute of added time.

The Girona players and staff are lining up around the bench in anticipation of the final whistle.

Fermin Lopez goes for the spectacular overhead kick after the ball pinballs around the Girona box, but he sends it over.

Barcelona have had 26 shots, 10 on target, but they've struggled for quality in front of Paulo Gazzaniga's goal.

Two points above Real Madrid - and seven clear of Atletico Madrid and Barcelona - unless Xavi's side can pull off a remarkable fightback in the closing stages.

It's shaping up to be a very interesting season in the Spainish top flight.

A double change now for Girona as Michel attempts to see out this significant victory.

Portu and Valery Fernandez come in for Viktor Tsygankov and Yan Couto with just over 10 minutes to go.

Another attempt by Ilkay Gundogan, who hasn't been scared to have a go this half, but again it's nothing too challenging for Paulo Gazzaniga.

Joao Cancelo is down and holding his face following a collision. Girona are doing a good job of disrupting Barcelona at the moment and they're managing to have some possession of their own as we head towards the final 15 minutes.
