Djordje Petrovic of Chelsea celebrates their sides victory with team mates after saving a penalty taken by Matt Ritchie of Newcastle United (not pictured) following a penalty shoot out in the Carabao Cup quarter-final

Newcastle United's Kieran Trippier endured a Stamford Bridge nightmare as Chelsea reached the Carabao Cup semi-finals after a penalty shootout.

Callum Wilson's 16th-minute goal looked to be sending Newcastle into the last four until substitute Mykhailo Mudryk pounced on the veteran defender's error deep into stoppage time to send the game to spot-kicks.

The 33-year-old, who has suffered a dip in form recently, then fired Newcastle's second penalty wide and once keeper Djordje Petrovic saved Matt Ritchie's spot-kick Chelsea had gone from the despair of contemplating defeat to the sheer elation of a place in the last four.

It was cruel on Trippier, such an influential figure under manager Eddie Howe, but his fatal indecision on a header gave Chelsea that lifeline which Mudryk gratefully accepted.

Cole Palmer, Conor Gallagher, Christopher Nkunku and Mudryk were all on target for Chelsea but only Callum Wilson and Bruno Guimaraes scored penalties for Newcastle, who suffered fresh disappointment after their Champions League exit.

  5. 'It's a very painful moment for us'

FT: Chelsea 1-1 Newcastle (4-2 on penalties)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe on Sky Sports: "Yeah it does, it hurts a lot. It's a very similar feeling to the end of the PSG game. The lads had committed so much, gave everything and we led for so long.

"We'd defended really, really well but we didn't get over the line.

"Whenever we concede we concede collectively not individually. I thought as a team defensively today we were excellent.

"Our shape was so good and we denied them really clearcut chances. We had to make some changes again due to injuries. I can't praise the players enough.

"We tried to refocus and forget the last part of the game and the fact that we were in a shootout to try to get to the semi-final. Penalty shootouts are always a lottery and we didn't quite win it then.

"I think we probably weren't as good technically as we would have wanted to be in the second half. In the first half we were a clear threat and scored our goal. But we lost our threat in the second half, even if we defended really well.

"We accepted our role in the game that we were going to defend and frustrate them. Like I say, we were a couple of minutes away from winning the game."

On three players going off: "Botman was a planned substitution after 45 minutes, a nice step for him. Krafth and Gordon got knocks."

Should Chelsea's Moses Caicedo have been sent off? "I'm going on what other people have said and they said it should be a red card.

"It's a very painful moment for us. We'll just have to accept it, digest it very quickly because we go back to the Premier League and go to Luton. That will be an emotional game.

  6. Post update

FT: Chelsea 1-1 Newcastle (4-2 on penalties)

    Jamie Redknapp

Former Tottenham midfielder on Sky Sports

What I can't understand is why would you do something like that two minutes into the game?

Caicedo is nowhere near the ball. Has he tried to hurt him?

  7. 'A lot of good work done from the players'

FT: Everton 1-1 Fulham (4-2 on penalties)

    Everton

Everton manager Sean Dyche: "I think there were a lot of good things from the performance, James Garner was excellent and so was Jimmy [James Tarkowski].

"We are working hard to create chances and that relentless attitude is important to us and it was on show - a lot of good work done from the players today.

"Apart from the first 10 to 15 minutes we were very strong, we mixed up play and we affected the opposition asking so many questions at varying times.

"We got into very good areas, but did not find the last pass, but I am not going to question it too much as we have been scoring lately.

"I said to the players 'of course we wanted to go through', I have made that clear, we have put out strong sides at every opportunity.

"The mentality towards performances, I thought it was there again today, their will and demand to win - sometimes it just doesn't pay you back."

On missing Abdoulaye Doucoure: "We still looked a threat the players have been delivering that. We are taking those moments, but we just didn't tonight until Beto took his."

On Michael Keane and Jarred Branthwaite: "I thought Keano was good and Jarred Branthwaite to left-back got on with it, the mentality is growing.

"The acceptance of 'right OK, I was playing out of position and getting on with it and delivering performances', I have been pleased with that."

  10. Middlesbrough move into League Cup semi-finals for first time since 2004 - read the report

    FT: Port Vale 0-3 Middlesbrough

    Ged Scott

    BBC Sport at Vale Park

    Middlesbrough score a goal

Middlesbrough booked their place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals for the first time since they won the trophy in 2004 as they comfortably saw off Port Vale in freezing cold Burslem.

Michael Carrick's men made light of being drawn away for a fifth straight round as they eased to victory.

Jonny Howson's deflected shot and Morgan Rogers' strike put Boro 2-0 up inside 23 minutes. Matt Crooks then wrapped up an easy quarter-final triumph on 53 minutes.

Vale's only moment of hope came in only the fourth minute when Ethan Chislett was just off target with an early free-kick. But Championship promotion contenders Boro did not take long to show their greater cutting edge against their League One hosts.

Captain Howson fired a right-foot shot from the edge of the box that deflected off Jason Lowe to loop over Vale keeper Connor Ripley. Boro old boy Ripley was then beaten for a second time when Sam Silvera pulled back for Rogers, who found the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Eight minutes into the second half, Crooks got the third after being fed on the edge of the box, holding off Vale defender Lowe and side-footing into the bottom right corner.

Boro now face a two-leg semi-final in January, guaranteed to be against Premier League opposition, as they go into Wednesday's draw, which follows the fourth quarter-final between Liverpool and West Ham United.

  11. Fulham sink Everton on penalties to reach semis - read the report

FT: Everton 1-1 Fulham (6-7 on penalties)

    Shamoon Hafez

    BBC Sport at Goodison Park

    Fulham celebrate

Tosin Adarabioyo was the hero, converting the winning spot-kick in the shootout, as Fulham beat Everton on penalties to reach the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Centre-back Tosin stepped up in sudden death, after Idrissa Gueye struck the post, and rolled home to send the Cottagers through to a first domestic semi-final in 22 seasons.

Marco Silva's men were triumphant here in the opening game of the campaign courtesy of a smash-and-grab victory and they went home to London victorious once again.

The opener came four minutes before half-time via Michael Keane's own goal, with the Everton defender diverting the ball into his own net from Antonee Robinson's cross.

The hosts could have hit back immediately but James Tarkowski was unable to get enough of a firm connection on James Garner's free-kick and flicked his headed effort narrowly off target.

Everton searched for the equaliser in the second period and Jack Harrison fizzed a long-range drive just wide before substitute Beto headed in from close range with nine minutes remaining.

The game went to penalties with Bobby De Cordova-Reid seeing his effort saved by Jordan Pickford and Amadou Onana's having a weak effort kept out by Bernd Leno, before Tosin sent the travelling fans into raptures.

The draw for the semi-finals takes place on Wednesday, with the first leg of those ties being played in the week commencing 8 January.

  12. 'The fans and the club deserve this'

FT: Chelsea 1-1 Newcastle (4-2 on penalties)

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino, speaking to Sky Sports: "I think it was a really good game. We suffered when we conceded, it was our mistake. I said to the players to always believe until the end. Sometimes in football you need some luck and it came. Credit to the players because they were fantastic."

Positive result: "We were talking before the game that we felt positive after the Sheffield United game. To beat Newcastle, you can see the players on the pitch and it was a good feeling with the fans. It made us really believe, grow and improve. We are doing well, we are recovering players."

Positivity in squad: "They are so young. It's amazing because we always talk about the talent but being all together helps. We are creating a very good bond. It's about time to know each other. This type of result will help us, but also results like Newcastle away will help us realise what needs to improve."

On Enzo Fernandez: "He felt sick. He didn't feel well before the game and then when he started to play, it wasn't going well. He asked to come out because he wasn't feeling well. Colwill was more tactics. He was a little bit tired at the end of the first half. Levi is going to be ready for the next game."

Being in semi-final: "A very good start. We are so happy. The fans and the club deserve this sort of feeling. It's a big motivation. We are waiting for the draw tomorrow."

    Jamie Redknapp

Former Liverpool midfielder on Sky Sports

  15. Post update

FT: Chelsea 1-1 Newcastle (4-2 on penalties)

    Shay Given

Former Newcastle goalkeeper on Sky Sports

If anyone was going to miss, we were hoping it was not Trippier after the mistake earlier in the game.

He's a brilliant set-piece specialist but he just drags his penalty away, he tries to be too precise.

Is the goal that Newcastle conceded playing on his mind at that point? It's a poor miss really.

  16. Post update

FT: Chelsea 1-1 Newcastle (4-2 on penalties)

    Karen Carney

Former Chelsea midfielder on Sky Sports

The most important thing tonight is they got through.

But I find Chelsea frustrating to watch. I just want them to do the simple things right.

  18. 'We wanted to make history in this football club'

FT: Everton 1-1 Fulham (6-7 on penalties)

    Fulham

Fulham manager Marco Silva, speaking to BBC 5 Live after the game: "It is incredible what the players have been doing, with our support and management.

"We wanted to make history in this football club, it is a serious approach in this competition and not just tonight.

"We did change four or five players from the last game, tonight we knew it was going to be very tough as Everton are in a good moment.

"I know how difficult it is when you come here even when we scored the first goal they [Everton fans] do not stop supporting their team.

"A lot of pressure, we knew before the match we was going to face high pressure all the time. In the first half we did better than we did in the second half.

"Second half Everton created more problems for us and we did not have not have possession to calm the game down.

"When we conceded and it went 1-1 I made some tactical changes but after the changes I think we did control the game much better.

"The penalty shootout, the team kept their composure and showed maturity."

  19. 'I just did my job'

FT: Chelsea 1-1 Newcastle (4-2 on penalties)

    Chelsea

Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic, speaking to Sky Sports: "Very tough game. We conceded an unlucky goal and we trust in ourselves and our goal. We had the patience. I want to congratulate the team and everyone deserves it."

On penalty shootout pressure: "I don't feel pressure because they need to score and I can be the hero. I just did my job. I lost twice in a shootout here in England before."

  20. Post update

FT: Chelsea 1-1 Newcastle (4-2 on penalties)

    Shay Given

Former Newcastle goalkeeper on Sky Sports

Newcastle are so full of injuries, you have to feel for Eddie Howe. He has to trust the 11 that are out there to finish the game.

Chelsea had looked like they'd run out of ideas and it came down to one mistake.
