La Liga leaders Real Madrid gained a hard-fought win over Mallorca thanks to Antonio Rudiger's late header.

Mallorca hit the woodwork twice as Antonio Sanchez's header bounced off the underside of the crossbar and down on to the goalline, with Samu Costa also hitting the post for the visitors.

Those misses proved costly as Rudiger headed in from Luka Modric's fine left-wing corner in the 78th minute.

Real, now unbeaten in 18 games in all competitions, are three points clear.

However, second-placed Girona will return level on points with Carlo Ancelotti's side if they beat third-placed Atletico Madrid in the late game on Wednesday.

This is what it does to the table. Rafael Benitez's Celta Vigo gained a vital win to move out of the bottom three thanks to a 96th-minute penalty from Williot Swedburg to give them a 2-1 win over Real Betis.

Girona face Atletico Madrid and that starts in less than 10 minutes.

For the second time, Mallorca have an effort that bounces off the woodwork. Samu Costa with an angled strike from 25 yards out after the referee played an advantage and didn't give a free-kick and the ball bounces off the foot of the right post with Andriy Lunin well beaten.
