But as my north-Nottinghamshire steak pie (absolutely full with steak, I might add) settles down, I'm left concluding that this game is far from what it seems.

Salford are unbeaten since Karl Robinson took charge at the turn of the year, their form is the second best in the league.

And so Mansfield - who have lost just four times all year - may face their sternest challenge of the season at home. A win though could see them leapfrog Stockport at the top.

Leaders Stockport have looked imperious at times this season but a run of three games without a win has allowed the teams below to close the gap.

Dave Challinor’s side will believe they have a good chance of getting back to winning ways against strugglers Swindon today, though.

Third-placed Wrexham take their three-game unbeaten record on the road to play-off-chasing Gillingham in eighth and MK Dons, who have an eye on the automatic promotion spots, host Newport.

Harrogate occupy the last of the play-off spots in seventh but are remarkably only three points ahead of their opponents Walsall, who are 16th in the table. Such is the close nature of the standings, should the Saddlers win today they could race up the rankings with Harrogate plummeting in the opposite direction.

Forest Green have won just one of their past 17 in League Two, with their only win in the fourth tier since October coming 11 days ago against Barrow. Steve Cotterill’s men are six points from safety as they host Nigel Adkins’ Tranmere, who are 17th.

Elsewhere, AFC Wimbledon are at Doncaster, Accrington host Crawley and struggling Grimsby head to Morecambe.

Oooh, this one should be a cracker. The top two highest-scoring teams over the past six games meet at Mansfield this afternoon.

Salford have pulled away from the relegation spots under new manager Karl Robinson, and are looking to make it nine games unbeaten this afternoon in Nottinghamshire. When the former MK Dons and Oxford boss took over, the EFL trapdoor was five points behind. Now it's 16.

Nigel Clough's Mansfield are looking for a fourth win in five, and put one of the best home records in the country on the line again today. Only once have the Stags been defeated in front of their own fans this campaign in the league.

These two have found the net a combined 32 times in the past six games, so surely the net will bulge a few times this afternoon?

When you're propping up the rest of the teams in a division, it can be hard to look at the upcoming fixture list and pick out opportunities for three points.

Playing the side only three places above you at home might just catch your eye, however, and that's what Sutton fans will take belief from today as Colchester make the trip to south London for a crucial encounter at the bottom of the EFL.

A first win in 10 League Two games for Steve Morison's side would move them within five points of the Essex club, and potentially off the bottom of the table - a position they have held for more than half of the campaign.

The form table does not make happy reading for either of these sides, with just one with between them in their past 12 games combined, though Colchester have tasted defeat just once in that time. Danny Cowley has steadied the ship with four draws in his first six games.

Since these sides played out a 1-1 draw in November, Sutton have registered more points than their visitors in the league. If they have any hopes of playing League Two football next season, they might just need to ensure they outscore them again today, too.

When these two sides met back in November, today’s hosts Notts County were sitting pretty in the top three, preparing themselves for a tilt at a second straight promotion.

A dramatic conclusion in Cheshire saw Courtney Baker-Richardson convert a last-minute penalty to send Crewe above County in the table.

Fast forward to today and Crewe are still fourth, one point off third and just four off the division's summit, having lost just once since the turn of the year.

It's been a very different story for Stuart Maynard’s side. One win in their past seven means the Magpies have slipped to 10th, one point outside the play-off places, but 11 behind today's visitors.

Lee Bell's Alex have lost captain Luke Offord until the end of the season because of injury, but will be able to count on the services of the experienced Mickey Demetriou, who signed an extended deal at the Alexandra Stadium in the week.

Bottom-of-the-table Carlisle are on an awful run at present. They have lost their past seven league games, have not tasted victory since 1 January and are 13 points from safety. Survival already looks a tall order and they really need to start picking up points. Could they start today against Bristol Rovers, who have lost three of their past four?

Port Vale are another team who have been having a bad time of it lately. They have lost both matches under new boss Darren Moore, which is part of an eight-game winless run. However, win today and they can move out of the relegation zone. They will need to perform well against a Lincoln side unbeaten in seven.

Burton are looking to haul themselves further clear of danger against Northampton, and Exeter will have similar intentions as they host second-bottom Fleetwood.

Three points separate 16th-placed Reading and Shrewsbury before their fixture this afternoon, with the Royals looking to continue their good recent form.

Leyton Orient were one of the form sides not too long ago but need to get their promotion ambitions back on track away at sixth-placed Oxford today. Des Buckingham's side are unbeaten in six - although five have been draws.

Stevenage's form has been a bit rocky of late but they can move within a point of Oxford and the play-off positions with a win over a resurgent Wycombe.

It is a fixture that will forever be linked to 1953, the FA Cup final of Stanley Matthews, Stan Mortensen and Nat Lofthouse.

71 years later, there is no silverware at stake, but the game is significant for many reasons.

Bolton begin the day in third, only outside the top two on goal difference, unbeaten in seven and with games in hand on both Portsmouth and Derby.

But Blackpool have big aspirations to make the play-offs and enjoyed a crucial win at Peterborough seven days ago.

The gap is seven points and the Tangerines need to put together a run if they are going to gatecrash the top six.

And for an added bit of intrigue, follow Blackpool centre-back Ian Evatt returns to Bloomfield Road for the first time as an opposing manager.

Anyone wanting an example of how to grind your way to promotion will be studying a video of Derby's efforts this season.

In winning 14 of their past 19 games in League One, the Rams have put themselves right in the mix for a ticket back to the Championship.

With that squad, Paul Warne's side should be up there, but while the football has not always been pretty, the results have been coming.

However, a trip up the M1 to Barnsley is one of their stiffest tests. The Reds are lying quietly in fourth, six points adrift of Derby.

They can halve that gap today and get in the mix for the top two without the scrutiny and pressure that the Rams and leaders Portsmouth face.

It all makes for a fascinating encounter, with over 18,000 expected at Oakwell.

This is one of the most attractive fixtures in any League One season, between two clubs who aspire and demand to be higher.

And both may be rid of League One football next year. But as leaders Portsmouth chase promotion to the Championship, Charlton are in danger of being sucked into the bottom division.

Pompey are on the back of four straight wins. One more and it will be their best run since early autumn as they try to hold off the chasers.

The Addicks have forgotten what winning feels like. Without one since November (seven draws and eight defeats), they are onto a third manager of the season in Nathan Jones.

The Welshman has picked up two points from his three games, but as a former Southampton boss, he may find today's opponents will be keen to extend that winless streak.
