Top six finish 'a credit' to St Mirren - Robinson

St Mirren manager Steven Robinson tells BBC Scotland: "With the resources we have at this club, when there's teams below us with riches beyond our dreams, [sealing a top-six place is] a credit to this group of players, the staff and the board who have tried to build a football club as we go.

"It's the first time in 39 years that we've gone in the top six twice [in succession] so the expectation levels have risen. We've obviously had poor moments along the way, which is always going to happen but they've responded and I'm especially delighted for the staff who've worked tirelessly and drag every last drop out of the group of players. It's been a team effort from the boardroom all the way down."It was horrible conditions, balls flying out of play, players struggling to control it, it wasn't pretty on the eye, so I don't want to take away the achievement from this group of boys."

Livingston unlucky and lucky - Martindale

Livingston boss David Martindale tells BBC Scotland: "First half was frustrating for both teams with the amount of stoppages. It was really difficult for anyone to get any control of the game.

"Second half, I felt we were the better team. We were a wee bit unlucky, but saying that we get lucky with the offside call [for Aberdeen’s disallowed goal].

"We're one point closer than where we were, that’s what I'm going to take from it and it’s a clean sheet for the players."

Ross County interim manager Don Cowie tells BBC Scotland: "Disappointed to take nothing from it. The conditions were very challenging. Our biggest frustration is conceding a goal and allowing them to get three points when I didn't think there was too much in it.

"I'm a honest person, I've said to [goalkeeper] George [Wickens]... I'm sure he'll feel he could have saved [Kyle Vassell's winner].

"It was difficult but we still caused them problems in the first half. The ball just didn't drop for us. We'd liked to have played more football, but the weather wasn't conducive to that.

"We've got six very important games left, it's about preparing right and taking as many points as we can."

'Cruel game' for Hibs boss Montgomery

Hibs head coach Nick Montgomery tells BBC Scotland: "It was a game of football in difficult conditions where we had 72% possession and we conceded two shots on target and two goals, I think that tells a story.

"We weren't good enough in both boxes and it's two moments, two lapses of concentration. It can be a cruel game, it was cruel today but we can't give away goals like we did today.

"We had to be patient and I thought we were but we have to concentrate for the full game and to concede the goals the way we did was a real kick in the teeth. The only positive we can take out of today is that results may go for us elsewhere and we still have a chance in the top six."

Hearts head coach Steven Naismith tells BBC Scotland: "The conditions were really poor, they had a big impact on the game. Any time the ball was in the air you were just guessing where it would land. "I thought we defended really well against a side that deserves to be in the top six. In the moments we could make the right passes we did, we scored, probably should have scored more.

"Delighted with a win at a time when we probably had three of our most consistent performers not involved in the squad."

'Tough to take' for Aberdeen

Aberdeen caretaker manager Peter Leven tells BBC Scotland: "It's a tough one at the end, I thought we deserved the three points.

"At times we never hit the target as much as we wanted. We could've been better around the edge of the box.

"Conditions weren't great but we could've created more."

Leven added he does not know if he will be in the dugout next week as the club continue to look for a new manager.

Kilmarnock boss Derek McInnes tells BBC Scotland: "It was pretty arduous out there. We had to really reinforce the need for concentration.

"I thought we had more control of the game. It was a great finish from Kyle [Vassell]. It's just about managing the game and seeing it out. I thought we just about deserved to win the game.

"Kyle leads by example. He's always ready to play. He gets to double figures, which is great. That front four has a lot of potency about it. It's pleasing we got back to a clean sheet.

"We don't anticipate too much change for next season. Even a couple of the loan players, we'd like to keep. There's a few out of contract we'd like to keep. Hopefully, we can come back with European football to look forward to, which is a massive carrot for players. That's part of the selling point now.

"Complacency is the devil. We're doing a lot of good things, we never have a lazy day. We probably need a couple more wins to secure European football. That's the intention."

Levein lauds 'outstanding' Saints

St Johnstone boss Craig Levein tells BBC Scotland: "It is all down to the willingness to do the work on the field and I thought the players were outstanding.

"Last week we had a really good performance and we didn't manage to get the points we deserved. Today was even more pleasing because we had the performance and managed to get the three points.

"There were a lot of really good things, I thought defensively we were really solid. Dimi [Mitov] made a few really good saves, making up for his rare mistake last week and I'm thrilled for him because he deserves to get credit for what he did.

"Our aim is to see if we can catch some of the teams above us. We've got a lot of tough matches coming up, really important matches and if I can get that type of performance I'll take it."

Motherwell manager Stuart Kettlewell tells BBC Scotland: "It's symptomatic of the week it's been, in the lead-up to the game, all the talk and everything else. I'm so big on my preparation and when other scenarios are thrown in, it takes eyes off the ball.

"I'm just so proud of the players, their reaction and response. We were renowned with that for a spell, for doing that often. I'd rather be ahead, but to find a way back into that game and win it in the fashion we did... it looked a long way back after their second goal.

"I didn't think there was anything in the game at half-time. They didn't have much quality. We felt it would be a tight affair, reliant on mistakes. I'm annoyed with the first goal and Liam Kelly knows he could and should do better [for the second]. He was the first one to walk in and thank his team-mates.

"That shows the togetherness and trust. You can't always pull the rabbit out the hat.

"I always said this isn't in our hands. We'll have to get a favour from somewhere. We have given ourselves an opportunity [of finishing in the top six], we have to take care of our own business. It creates a scenario that excites."

Big game in the Scottish Premiership title race tomorrow as Rangers host leaders Celtic.

Brendan Rodgers' side hold a one-point advantage but have played a game more than Philippe Clement's team, who will play their game in hand away to Dundee on Wednesday evening.

Scottish Leagues 1 & 2

The champions of Scottish Leagues 1 and 2 have now both been confirmed with Stenhousemuir this week following Falkirk in sealing their place at the top of the table.

Stenny will be in League 1 next season and Falkirk, who kick off against Cove Rangers shortly, will be in the Championship.

League 1 bottom side Edinburgh City will be in League 2 next season, as we already knew.

The promotion play-off places in both divisions are still to be finalised but Hamilton Academical in League 1 are assured a play-off semi-final place.

Elgin City, Forfar Athletic, Bonnyrigg Rose, Clyde and incumbent Stranraer could all yet finish bottom of League 2 and enter the SPFL play-off final.

Second tier

Dundee United remain four points clear of Raith Rovers at the top of the Scottish Championship after both won today.

Partick Thistle are a point closer to securing a promotion play-off place, while Airdrieonians are three points closer to that same goal.

Dunfermline Athletic, Greenock Morton, Ayr United, Queen's Park and Inverness Caledonian Thistle are all arithmetically capable of finishing fourth but realistically Dunfermline and Morton are the most likely challengers to Airdrie.

Arbroath are all but relegated, 12 points adrift at the bottom with a vastly inferior goal difference and four games to play. Second-bottom Inverness move to within a point of Queen's Park and within three points of Ayr United.

Here's the all important table.

Hearts, in third, remain 11 points clear of Kilmarnock after both won today. Killie stretch their advantage over St Mirren to five points.

St Mirren cannot be caught by seventh-placed Hibernian before the split but Dundee could yet get above the Dens Park side before the split.

Hibs' top-six hopes have taken a blow but they remain in contention with Dundee for the final berth in the top half of the table. By winning today, Motherwell still have an outside chance of usurping both Dundee and Hibs.

At the bottom, Livingston cut Ross County's advantage to nine points while St Johnstone move four points clear of the bottom two and 13 points clear of of Livi.

Plenty of celebrating in Paisley, even if it was slightly muted, coming as it did after a home defeat for St Mirren. The main aim for the season has been achieved - St Mirren have back-to-back top-six finishes for the second consecutive season, the first time that has happened in nearly 40 years.

It's well-deserved too, as they've hardly been out of the top six all season. Hibernian's home defeat by St Johnstone meant defeat to the other capital side didn't matter. St Mirren might feel hard done to in that referee Alan Muir awarded the visitors a first-half penalty after being asked to go to the monitor but when the same thing happened for the home side in the second half, when they were 2-1 down, he elected to stick with his original decision of no penalty.

St Mirren were much better in the second period and responded well to being two down. As for Hearts, no Lawrence Shankland, no problem. While he was in his sick bed, the third best team in the country proved their credentials once again. Solid at the back and enterprising up front with Kenneth Vargas and Alan Forrest buzzing about the Buddies' defence, Hearts always looked in control. The next big one for them is the Scottish Cup semi-final with Rangers in a fortnight. They'll want their talisman Shankland fit and healthy for that one.

St Mirren may have lost today but their place in the Scottish Premiership's top six at the season's end is secure.

Stenhousemuir win Scottish League 2

They will be celebrating at Ochilview with today's goal-less draw between Stenhousemuir and East Fife enough to seal the Scottish League 2 title and promotion for Stenny.

It's a first ever league title win for the Warriors.
