  2. Hamilton surprised by quali pacepublished at 17:51 British Summer Time 7 June 2015

    Chief F1 writer

"Lewis Hamilton admitted to have surprised himself in qualifying with the speed with which he was able to bounce back from a final practice session of which he made such a mess that he failed even to set a representative lap time. His team-mate's fortunes, meanwhile, went the other way. Neck-and-neck with Hamilton through the first two parts of qualifying, separate by hundredths, with Rosberg ahead in the first and Hamilton in the second, it all went wrong for Rosberg in the top 10 shoot-out.

"The German said a poor set of tyres on the first run convinced him he needed to change the set-up to counterbalance a loose rear end, only to find he had low front grip on his second run. Team boss Toto Wolff said the lack of grip could have been down to the tyres not being warmed up properly. Either way, Hamilton was free and Rosberg starts behind his team-mate for the sixth time in seven races this season."

Now we're not entirely sure what's going on here. Did Eddie and DC get so much stick for yesterday's matching ensembles that EJ's been forced to sew some new threads? Who knows.

Ile Notre DameImage source, Getty Images

The Ile Notre-Dame is a man-made construction, originally built to host the 1967 World Fair (or Expo '67).

Several buildings still remain from that exhibition, while the Olympic rowing strip was added alongside for the 1976 Games.

The changing rooms for the rowers were used as pit buildings when F1 first arrived in 1978.

The track was named after Canadian F1 driver Gilles Villeneuve following his death in 1982.

  7. Hamilton responds in 'magnificent style'published at 17:40 British Summer Time 7 June 2015

    Andrew Benson
    Chief F1 writer

"Lewis Hamilton arrived in Montreal with all sorts of questions swirling around him. How might he respond to the disappointment of losing the Monaco Grand Prix, a year after a similar situation led to a mistake in qualifying and being beaten to pole in Canada by Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg? A series of errors throughout practice - and a final practice session which he described as 'terrible' - only made those questions louder.

"In the event, though, Hamilton responded in magnificent style, and he will start the race from a convincing pole position. The 44th pole of his career - the same as his car number - also happened to be one of the best."

  8. But first, a few rudimentary calculationspublished at 17:38 British Summer Time 7 June 2015

    BBC

The eggheads at the FIA have been busy since last we were with you, dishing out grid and time penalties to those who have displeased them.

First man in the naughty corner is Toro Rosso's Max Verstappen, who in addition to a five-place grid penalty for walloping the rear of a Lotus in Monaco also incurred a 10-place drop for changing his car's internal combustion engine on Friday.

After qualifying 12th and therefore being unable to serve all 15 of his grid penalties, Verstappen, who starts 19th, also has a 10-second penalty to be taken at his first pit stop.

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, who would have started 15th after Verstappen's penalty was applied, has also been handed a five-place grid penalty for overtaking Roberto Merhi's Manor under a red flag in FP3. He will actually start 18th.

Finally, Jenson Button, who will start from last after a missing qualifying with an engine problem, will take a drive-through penalty early in the race as his McLaren team has been forced to replace further power-unit elements.

It's fair to say Lewis Hamilton's build-up to securing pole position for today's Canadian Grand Prix was anything but blot-free, taking in as it did a spin, a couple of flying leaps over kerbs, a soggy crash and too many locked brakes to mention.

But in the end, as is often the way with the very best, he delivered with the pressure on.

The Mercedes man will peel away from career pole position number 44 in around 90 minutes from now bidding to snap team-mate Nico Rosberg's run of back-to-back wins.

Hamilton's nearest title rival lines up second, with Kimi Raikkonen in a very quick Ferrari third.

    Let's do this.
