  1. Bye for now

    Austrian Grand Prix start

Well that race was a lot of fun, in my humble opinion.

It was a shame that we were denied a more competitive fight for victory due to Hamilton's five-second penalty, but the result keeps the title race more than interesting heading to Silverstone in a fortnight, with just 10 points between the Mercedes duo.

For all the fears of Hamilton running and hiding this season, it's worth noting that Rosberg is just six points worse off that he was last year, when the title very much felt like a two-horse race. And three wins from four races more than suggests Rosberg can maintain his form.

Even though we're signing off, be sure to check back on the site after 16:35 BST for video highlights of the race and that monster crash between Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso, which remains under investigation by the race stewards.

Thanks for your company. We'll see you for the British Grand Prix.

    Alonso and Raikkonen
  2. Alonso earns unwanted record

Fernando Alonso has been in F1 a long, long time, indeed he was the baby of the 2001 intake at just 20 years of age.

Two world titles and 32 wins have followed in 14 seasons in the sport, but only today did he rack up a fourth consecutive retirement from a grand prix.

His previous worst was three in a row, at the Austrian, Monaco and Canadian Grands Prix back in his debut 2001 season at Minardi.

  3. Did Raikkonen simply lose it?

    Andrew Benson

    Chief F1 writer

    EPA

"Exactly what happened in the scary crash between Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso remains unclear, but replays are starting to emerge on the internet and one of them seems to suggest pretty definitively that Raikkonen simply lost it and turned sharp left into the McLaren.

"Alonso said he felt a lack of grip from the Ferrari's tyres might be to blame: 'It was obviously quite scary. Kimi started with the prime tyre, which probably didn't help for the level of grip. He exited Turn Two with a lot of wheelspin so the car was moving. We were all overtaking him left and right and when he lost the car to the left I was on the left. We went both on the wall and I was lucky to not hit him on the head. I was braking but my wheels were in the air. Luckily we were both fine. I was in the wrong place. It was a very strange incident. He lost the car in fifth gear or something like that.'"

  4. Hamilton ties 45-year-old Stewart record

He may not have won the race but Lewis Hamilton achieved a little milestone today as he led his 17th consecutive grand prix.

That ties Sir Jackie Stewart's long-held record, the Scot achieving the feat while driving for Matra and Tyrrell in 1969-70.

Bishop Yinkus: Hate to admit it but credit to Nico despite giving Hamilton pole, he still stormed forward and won.

Nick: At least swearing on the podium makes the sport a smidge more exciting...

Lovely use of the word smidge there.

  6. Maldonado finding consistency

Did I say he was coming good or what?

Pastor Maldonado - he of the completely hatstand overtaking manoeuvre at the end of that race - has now finished in the points in each of the last two races.

That's the same amount as he managed in his previous 45 races.

But I managed to keep the line and just use the experience."

  13. Fortieth career podium Massa

    BBC F1 co-commentator

  21. Rosberg makes it three wins out of four

So that is Nico Rosberg's third win of the season and second in a row at this track.

It's his 11th career victory and sees him close back to within 10 points of Lewis Hamilton at the head of the drivers' standings.

He has now won three of the last four races.

The German has thoroughly deserved this one. He's been brilliant all weekend and - qualifying aside - has always seemed to have the legs on the world champion.

Verstappen then sailed off track, allowing the Venezuelan through. He's now seventh.

  30. Vettel has a go

Vettel has fired the first shot in his battle with Massa, stuffing his nose up the inside of the Williams into three. The Brazilian stays ahead. Just.

  31. Mercedes team radio

Nico Rosberg: "Vibration getting stronger and stronger on the right front."

He remains comfortably ahead of team-mate Hamilton, who also has a five-second penalty to be added.

  32. Vettel ups ante

Vettel is right on Massa now.

Half a second his the gap. All eyes on this battle.

  33. Maldonado on the up

Pastor Maldonado has become a much steadier pair of hands in recent times.

He raced very well in Canada to score his first points of the season and he doing the same again today. He's all over Verstappen in the battle for sixth and it looks only a matter of time before the Lotus passes the Toro Rosso.

Also, if he sees the chequered flag today he'll make it 100 days without a crash.

  41. A tweeting frenzy

Some 39,000 tweets on the hashtag #AustrianGP have filtered through in the last three hours but unsurprisingly it was the Alonso-Raikkonen crash on lap one that prompted a spike in social media activity.

This image has been retweeted over 1,600 times.

It's a cracker to be fair. I think this is the third time we've used it.

    crash
  42. Vettel applying pressure to Massa

The race for victory looks settled with Hamilton's five-second penalty rather scuppering that one, so the battle for third is taking on greater importance.

It's a good one too. The Williams of Massa is the incumbent at present, but the Ferrari of Vettel - who lost the position at a slow pit stop - is closing in.

The gap is 2.4sec and this could be a duel to the flag.

  43. Great battle for eighth

Pastor Maldonado and Daniel Ricciardo have just had a nice duel for eighth place, the dice starting at the back end of lap 50 and continuing into the first turns of the next, the Lotus eventually getting the job done into turn two.

"Good job, Pastor," comes the message from the team on the radio.

At the end of the 51st lap, Ricciardo comes in for his stop, serving his five-second penalty as he does so.

Daniel Ricciardo is up to eighth in the Red Bull - but that position flatters him as he is the only man yet to make a stop today, 44 laps into this race.

  50. Mercedes team radio

Team to Lewis Hamilton: "Lewis, we have a penalty for crossing the white line on pit exit."

  51. Hamilton's penalty

    David Coulthard

    BBC F1 co-commentator

"I wonder then if Mercedes, in the interest of reliability, have both of their cars turned down."

Slower stop, 3.1secs stationary, he charges out of the pits but on the track Rosberg is comfortably through and back into the lead.

That wasn't even close. Rosberg did a quickest lap of the race on his new tyres - 1:11.2 - so he earned the luxury of that nice gap to his team-mate.

Valtteri Bottas brings his Williams F1 car into the pits

"It's looking very much like a one-stop race. A two-stop is pretty much the same race time, but there is a greater risk of being stuck in traffic. Tyre degradation is very low, although there is a risk of graining - where the surface of the tyre tears and then the pieces of rubber get stuck to the surface, reduction grip - on both the left rear and right front.

"The stops should be around the mid-20s in terms of laps. For those outside the top 10, starting on the 'soft' tyre will be tempting, as it gives them the opportunity to run long into the race before stopping, and gaining track position. It does not look like rain at this stage, but the teams say the weather forecasts have been unreliable."

Sahara Force India driver Niko Hulkenberg tells BBC Sport what he hopes to do this afternoon: "Hopefully more damage. "Star performer in qualifying? Apart from the pole man, it had to be a toss-up between Force India's Nico Hulkenberg and Toro Rosso's Max Verstappen in fifth and seventh places. The German is still riding the wave of euphoria that came with winning on his Le Mans debut last weekend and was quick whether in the wet or dry, and well clear of team-mate Sergio Perez all weekend.

Nico Hulkenberg in his Force India during qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix

"Verstappen, meanwhile, was spectacular in the rain in first qualifying, consistently setting fastest times and ending up fourth. To be the fastest of the four Red Bull drivers in a very tricky session was a great achievement. Team-mate Carlos Sainz, who has been just as impressive this season, was even faster in the wet in Q1, but his decision to choose a set-up tilted at the possibility of a wet race left him 0.8secs off Verstappen in Q2. 'I hope it rains on Sunday,' the Spaniard said, 'because if not it will be a very complicated race due to the downforce level we've chosen.'"

Between 1976 and 1982 he entered 15 grands prix, qualifying just twice - in Spain and Austria in 1977.

  128. McLaren set for long afternoon

"Much as at the last race in Montreal, Austria has been a tale of woe for McLaren, with reliability problems - both before this race and at it - leading to 25-place grid penalties for both Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button. Yes, you read that right, 25 places. Austria is not a good track for a car that has a strong chassis but a weak engine and Alonso and Button took 15th and 17th, which means a back of the grid start and an early drive-through for the Spaniard and a 10-second stop-and-go for Button.

"But Alonso, who has generally been a picture of positivity all year, retained his bright outlook, saying that the new short nose-based aerodynamic upgrade had worked.

Fernando Alonso during the driver parade ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix

"'The car felt more competitive this weekend in the corners,' the two-time champion said, 'but unfortunately it is a very high power-effect circuit so we cannot maximise the new aero package but we are moving in the right direction so it is so far very positive.

"Alonso and McLaren very much see the race as an attempt to gather data on the car in their bid to have a more competitive second half of the season."

  129. Father's Day: A brace of flying Dutchmen

The newest father-son F1 driver dynasty is provided by the Verstappens, with young Max currently carving out quite a reputation for himself at Toro Rosso.

The 17-year-old became the sport's youngest ever driver when he made his debut in March and went on to break the record for the youngest ever driver to score points by more than two years when he finished seventh in Malaysia.

Dad Jos made his F1 debut with Benetton in 1994 and went on to contest 106 races through to the end of the 2003 season.

He finished on the podium twice, back-to-back third places in Hungary and Belgium in his debut season, but would score just seven additional points over the next seven years.

The Mail on Sunday's Jonathan McEvoy does not have many nice things to say about Formula 1 this morning.

In reference to the two 25-place grid penalties handed to Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso he writes: "The FIA handed out a sheet explaining the decision in language that went beyond jargon into impenetrable technical gobbledegook.

"It could not have been more inaccessible if it had been written in Ionic Greek. This reinforces the notion that Formula 1 is disappearing up its own exhaust pipe."

    Andrew Benson

    Chief F1 writer

"Ferrari had looked to be pretty much a match for Mercedes through Friday practice but, as is so often the case, come qualifying Mercedes stretched their legs and were just out of reach. How did Sebastian Vettel feel about the expectation that he might split the Mercedes coming to nothing? He answered with a rude word, before saying: "I thought so too. I thought we were closer, but the gap to Williams and Force India was smaller than it was in practice and the gap to Mercedes was bigger. We know they turn their engine up for qually, which doesn't help. But I am happy with third.'

    Sebastian Vettel

"As for his chances in the race, Vettel said: 'Usually from Saturday to Sunday we seem to be able to come the gap a bit. Hopefully the same thing happens and the race pace is good. The two left-handers in the second section are quite tricky, you need to be happy with the car around here, and I am. Hopefully we can put some pressure on them.'

"Vettel's team-mate Kimi Raikkonen was a very unhappy man after what he said was a team communication mix-up meant he ended up 18th and knocked out in Q1. The various penalties mean the Finn starts 14th."

  140. Speaking of the grid penalties...

    Austrian Grand Prix pit lane

The tiresome issue of grid penalties is already taking up too much of everyone's time, so all I will try and be brief here.

McLaren duo Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button each have 25-place grid penalties (a combined today of 50 places, of which they will serve seven. Go figure), while Red Bull's Daniil Kvyat and Daniel Ricciardo both have 10-place penalties.

In addition, Ricciardo must serve a five-second penalty at his first stop, Alonso a 10-second drive through, and Button a 10-second stop-go.

    Sigh.

  141. Ecclestone wants to look at sporting regs

    Andrew Benson

    Chief F1 writer

"Those who are confused or annoyed by the number of penalties that are handed out in F1 at the moment have a powerful ally, it has emerged.

"Bernie Ecclestone has expressed his frustration with the situation, too. 'I think we need to have a very, very, very good look at all our sporting regulations,' F1's commercial boss said. 'Don't go over the white line, don't do this, don't do that, if you change your engine you go back 20 places… The public don't understand and when they do understand they don't care.'

Bernie Ecclestone speaks to reporters ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix

"Ecclestone also played down the threat of Red Bull leaving F1. 'I don't think so,' he said. 'I know Mr Mateschitz very well. There'd be more chance of him pulling out if he was winning than when he was losing. They're disappointed, aren't they? What they are saying is: 'It's not our fault that our performance is what it is'. He (Mateschitz) is a bit frustrated. He's spent a lot of money, does a good job and has been fantastic for Formula 1. It doesn't mean that because he's falling out of love he wants a divorce. He just needs a new girlfriend.'"

"Would Nico Rosberg have beaten Lewis Hamilton to pole if he had completed his own final lap, after Hamilton's spin? It was too close to call.

"'Definitely gutted,' Rosberg said, 'but Lewis was 0.2secs up on the previous lap and I was 0.2secs exactly up at that point so I knew I had to go for it and I just exaggerated it.'

    Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton

"Rosberg knows he has a chance at the start, but beyond that he did not sound too confident about beating Hamilton in the race. 'I just have to keep the pressure on and hope that somehow something will go my way,' he said. 'It is easy to make mistakes so if I am able to keep the pressure on that could be an opportunity.'"

  150. Father's Day special

If the snotty kiss and home-made card I received this morning are anything to go by, it seems today is Father's Day.

In honour of this, we're going to take a trawl through the archives in the build-up to today's race to take a look at some of the father-son, father-daughter combos to grace the sport down the years.

First up, two British F1 heroes...

  151. Coming good when it counts

    Andrew Benson

    Chief F1 writer

"Three spins when trying to set a time on super-soft tyres in second practice, and an off-track incident in final practice, and lagging behind team-mate Nico Rosberg in the first and second parts of qualifying had all led to the impression that Lewis Hamilton did not feel quite at home on the Red Bull Ring this weekend.

    Lewis Hamiton

"But then, as he so often has this year, it all came together in qualifying. Hamilton nailed a stonker on his first run in final qualifying and pole was his, a spin at the first corner on his final run cancelled out by Rosberg doing the same at the final bend on his. 'It was a difficult session,' Hamilton said. 'I was a bit surprised I even got pole.

"'I was off Nico for three or four tenths each session and each run, each lap and I just didn't have the confidence in the balance I had at the time, and the temperature of the tyres and the brakes.

"'So, I'm really grateful that I at least got one decent - Q3 first run lap one and then lap three. The third one being much better. I'm grateful that I got those two laps in. And then coming to the end, I don't know exactly what went on but obviously I locked the rears and snapped it around. A bit similar to what happened last year in Turn Two here so… yeah, I'm definitely do that quite often in this car. Not sure why. Got big feet I think.'"

  152. 'This could be a cracker'

    Andrew Benson

    Chief F1 writer

"One does not want to risk commentator's curse, but this could be a cracker. The two Mercedes drivers have been evenly matched all weekend in Austria. If anything, in fact, Lewis Hamilton appeared to be struggling a little - and even admitted it - until a typically storming pole lap.

    Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg

"Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel is starting right behind them and has shown great race pace. And an already slippery track, which has led to many drivers spinning throughout the weekend, could quite well be doused with rain during the race.

"Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff admitted the team were 'not as confident' as they had been ahead of the last couple of races. And he said that, on race pace, he feared that the Ferrari might have the legs on them. 'You cannot really say what is going to happen in the race because the long runs look pretty difficult for us. The Ferrari was the quickest car on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.'"

  153. Good morning

Hello and welcome to live text coverage of the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, the eighth round of F1 2015.

Despite enjoying a definite edge over Hamilton throughout practice, it was yet another frustrating qualifying session for Nico Rosberg, who careered off track at the final turn on his final lap when pole was there for the taking, after his team-mate had already span off in turn one.

It left the German a frustrated second on the grid, two tenths off Hamilton, but in truth there is next to nothing between these two guys this weekend.

Throw into the mix Vettel's Ferrari, which finished quickest in two of the three practice sessions, and we have quite the race in store...

    Nico Rosberg
    Nico Rosberg
  154. What's that coming over the hill?

    Lewis Hamilton

Well, since you ask it's Austrian Grand Prix pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton and third-place man Sebastian Vettel.

These two chaps, plus 18 of their peers, will be doing battle in just over 90 minutes around the undulating sweeps and high-speed turns of the Red Bull Ring.

It's been an eventful race meeting so far, with cars flying off track, rain systems bubbling up from the Styrian Mountains, and Ferrari and Mercedes duelling for supremacy at the front.

What lies in store today, I wonder? We ride at 13:00 BST.
