  3. Sainz gets grid penaltypublished at 18:15 British Summer Time 12 June 2016

Carlos Sainz will lose five places on the grid for this afternoon’s Canadian Grand Prixafter Toro Rosso changed the gearbox on his car, which was damaged in the Spaniard’s qualifying accident on Saturday.

Sainz was eliminated in Q2 after getting it wrong through the final chicane and making contact with the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve’s infamous ‘Wall of Champions’.

With his previous gearbox having not completed the six consecutive events required by the regulations, the resulting penalty means he is expected to drop from 15th to 20th on the final Montreal grid.

Meanwhile, Kevin Magnussen is expected to start the race from the pit lane after Renault had his car re-scrutineered this morning following the Dane’s FP3 crash which prevented him participating in qualifying.

  5. Can they get the tyres up to temperature?published at 18:11 British Summer Time 12 June 2016

Lewis Hamilton believes the cold conditions will make it a testing day for all drivers in Montreal.

"It will be difficult for everybody with the tyres with the temperature being as low as it is," he said.

The pole-sitter adds that he hopes he and Nico Rosberg "both get good starts and have a good race".

The future of Ferrari technical director James Allison has been the subject of media speculation this weekend. There have been stories linking him with a return to Renault, who are said to have asked him to rejoin them.

However, BBC Sport understands that Allison, who extended his contract with Ferrari to the end of 2018 last summer, is 100% committed to the Italian team.

Ferrari have had an uncomfortable few races, with occasional promise of Mercedes-competitive pace fading like Will-O’-The-Wisp when it mattered. Things look much better this weekend, though. The car had been so strong that Sebastian Vettel went into qualifying thinking he had a chance of pole - albeit to admit afterwards that he was probably being a bit optimistic. Still, a new turbo had obviously made a difference, and the German was happy to ‘show the potential of the car’ for once.

"It was more stress from the outside than on the inside," he said. "We know we have a good car, we know we don’t have the best car yet. We are working hard on that. I don’t think anyone did that in one night but we try to make it in two nights, so to say. Don’t forget where we have come from; the shift that has gone through the team. Overall, I think we are on a good track."

Daniel Ricciardo arrived in Montreal in an uncharacteristically grumpy mood after his Red Bull team had lost him two consecutive victories. But he had perked up by Saturday - and out-qualifying team-mate Max Verstappen for the third consecutive race obviously helped. Just as in Spain, Verstappen had looked impressive through the weekend. But just as in Spain, Ricciardo in the end out-qualified him by a substantial margin - in this case a chunky 0.248secs on a short lap.

But Ricciardo came oh-so-close to a crash at the final chicane on the decisive lap - he clouted the wall, but got away with it. He said: "As soon as you take the first kerb, depending on what angle you hit it at, you know what angle it will put you at. So the last lap I went in pretty deep. I knew I had some margin on braking, so I used it and maybe the rest and went in turning into the first apex and knew I hadn’t rotated the car enough. So I knew when I got to the left, I would be pointing more toward the wall than the start-finish line. But knowing it was the last lap I decided to keep my foot in it and hope what happened to Carlos (Sainz) wouldn’t happen to me. It was quite a knock, but I just got away with it."

As for the race, Ricciardo is optimistic. "Hopefully we can be there with Mercedes and Ferrari. Mercedes have a bit of a qually mode so if they have to turn the engine down a little bit it could put us a lot closer. I would like a fight between all three teams; that would be awesome. I think we can be pretty close to them. If we can't fight with Mercedes, I am looking forward to a good fight with Ferrari."

The Mercedes were half a second quicker in qualifying than Ferrari last year, yesterday it was less than two tenths. Could this be Ferrari's race, or was the closeness simply down to Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton not producing their best yesterday?

Lewis Hamilton has now been on pole for every race this year at which he has not been hit by technical problems in qualifying. And even with those issues in China, Russia and Monaco, he is four-three up in qualifying compared to team-mate Nico Rosberg. Which might give some indication as to why he is so bemused by suggestions that his jet-set lifestyle is getting in the way of his racing.

Canada was another supreme performance - he was on pole despite not being especially pleased with either of his laps. He took pole with the first. And the second one was only 0.079secs shy of team-mate Nico Rosberg’s fastest.

As ever, speed is not Hamilton’s issue. And a mixed weather forecast for the race should in theory provide him with exactly the conditions in which he so thrives. Can he take another chunk out of Rosberg’s lead?

Hello! Welcome along to our coverage of the Canadian Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton put himself in a strong position to follow up his win in Monaco - his first victory of the season - by snatching pole position on Saturday, but he was not as dominant as he would have liked.

The Briton was less than tenth clear and of second-placed Nico Rosberg and under two-tenths clear of Sebastian Vettel, who was third.

Factor in the Red Bull duo of Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen lurking ominously in fourth and fifth respectively, then things could be about to get very tasty.

With seven wins, Michael Schumacher is the undisputed king of the Canadian Grand Prix, but Lewis Hamilton is staking a big claim for that crown.

A fifth pole position in Montreal yesterday has put him in prime position to move within two wins of equalling Schumacher's record.

However, if qualifying is anything to go by, he's going to have a real fight on his hands...
