Right, that's us done for the night/morning/day/whatever.

Nico Rosberg will chalk that down as a Friday well done. Fastest in both sessions, edging title rival Lewis Hamilton into second place by just 0.072 seconds in the second of those.

Add in a possible threat from the Red Bulls and a watery weather forecast, and it's all set up to be a fascinating weekend.

    Here's Andrew Benson's report.

We're off for a well-earned kip. We're back with you from 03:30 BST for FP3.

Chris Marsh: If you could make one adjustment to your teammate's car what would it be? See who enhances and who destroys!

Helipeek: If you had a choice of driving for another team next year, EXCEPT the one you're with now, who would it be?

Matthew Jordan: To LH 'when are you going to have the operation to get the phone removed from your hands?'

There's just a few minutes to go but the order remains unchanged. The drivers are on a mixture of tyres and just going for as long as possible.

Top lines so far are that the Red Bulls are very strong on the hard tyre and might well be emerging as realistic challengers this weekend.

  8. Angry man strikes againpublished at 07:25 British Summer Time 7 October 2016

F1's resident cantankerous radio-user Romain Grosjean has been at it again.

He said yesterday that he was a nice guy outside the car and that the Haas team loved the passion he often vocalises - with gusto - over the radio.

Well his team will be no doubt thrilled after his latest outburst, which concluded with the line: "The brakes are [INSERT RUDE WORD HERE]."

  10. Struggles for Buttonpublished at 07:14 British Summer Time 7 October 2016

Jenson Button's race engineer: "Do the next lap pushing please."

"Yes I have been pushing," comes the reply, which is worrying as the McLaren driver's times are poor. He's been consistently well off the pace of team-mate Fernando Alonso today and does not seem to have the answer.

"The car feels very similar to this morning," the Briton adds. "We haven't changed anything."

Gill: I'd ask the drivers 'What one rule would you change in F1 to make the racing better?'

Babber Raja: Lewis when are you going to learn to be as great a professional & role model off the track as your are great on the track as a racer?

Adam: I'd ask Lewis what his favourite SnapChat filter is.

Having been on shift since 1am we regret to announce we will not be partaking in this clearly worthwhile cause.

As the BBC Weather site is for some reason not giving me the forecast for Suzuka at the moment, I have put my extensive knowledge of Mie Prefecture to use by relocating my search to nearby Yokkaichi.

Anyway, it's forecast to rain on race day.
