Daniel Ricciardo, aided by those nippy super-softs gets the jump on Nico Rosberg and he's into second. Looking a good call by Red Bull to start him on those tyres.

Everyone has got away OK on the formation lap so it looks like everyone's all set to get off from the position they qualified in.

  10. One stop or two stops?published at 20:00 British Summer Time 23 October 2016

Strategy-wise, this race is a difficult call between one and two stops. On paper, two stops is the fastest - either super-soft, soft, medium or soft-soft-medium depending on which tyres are used at the start. But a one-stop on soft-medium (or the other way around) is not much slower and gives the advantage of track position. Williams have used this strategy to great effect, despite a not-particularly quick car, in the last two races and some will undoubtedly be tempted here, too.

But they are well behind Ferrari, who have won this race nine times, while Lotus and McLaren both have eight successes.

Tyrrell have two victories, with one apiece for the Cooper, Matra, Brabham, Williams and Red Bull teams.

Lewis Hamilton has won this race four times, with Michael Schumacher holding the record with five triumphs.

McLaren are not having the greatest of runs at the moment. Having turned their car into a regular top-10 qualifier in the summer, they have slipped back in recent races. And although 12th on the grid for Fernando Alonso looked better on paper than 15th in Japan two weeks ago, in fact the car was further off the pace percentage-wise than it was in Suzuka.

Racing director Eric Boullier said: “I think it is only due to the track layout. Some track layouts we will be stronger, some track layouts will be further back a little bit. And also we believe if we do our comparison with our competitors, you can see in the midfield it went very, very close. With the gap in terms of seconds we have now, we would have been higher up in the ranking seven or eight races ago, but it just got closer.”

Jenson Button ended up 19th after mystifyingly choosing with his engineer to do his first run in Q1 on the soft tyres and then encountering traffic on his second.
