If Nico Rosberg wins the title, he joins 16 other drivers - including his father Keke -  as a one-time world champion. Rosberg could, of course, go on to win many more.

If Nico Rosberg finishes in the top three, he will win the title regardless of what Lewis Hamilton does.

He's not been on the podium in just five of the 20 previous races this season.

Formula 1 is saying goodbye this evening to two major figures in Jenson Button and Felipe Massa. Both say they have no regrets and both announced their decision over the Italian Grand Prix weekend in early September. Button did not really have any choice over timing - McLaren were always going to promote Stoffel Vandoorne to partner Fernando Alonso - but he said on Saturday he wished he could have made the decision later.

“I still feel August is quite early,” he said. “When a driver decides he is going to leave the sport, retire from that certain type of sport, you should try to do it as late as possible. I did it way too early. The mindset definitely changes. Which is a shame. I didn't think it would, but it definitely did. I am not retiring. It is a bad word. It is thrown around too often. I am 36 years old. I am definitely not retiring. I have been working with the team here next year. I will be racing here with the team in other things and will be driving in other things until I’m 70 years old. I am not retiring until. It’s just whether I get paid to do it or not.”

He described this final race of his F1 career as “a big day”, adding: “It’s looking pretty tough on tyres. It should make for a good fight tomorrow. It doesn't really matter where I finish, it is more about the fight and having fun.”

Here are the two protagonists in the title battle. Can we read anything into their body language? Both look pretty calm.

"I felt amazing when I woke up this morning," says Lewis Hamilton. "But I have won on days when I have felt bad and on days when I have felt good.

"I definitely woke up and looked out over the sea where I’m staying and felt blessed to have another beautiful day.”

“I try to keep it business as usual," says Nico Rosberg. "Of course it is not easy in these circumstances, I am feeling good and the car is fast.”

Jenson Button on Instagram:, external So I hear today is a pretty big day for me. Today is the day that I will be strapped into an F1 car for probably the last time. It's been an eventful 17 years! I'd like to say a massive thank you to everyone that has helped and supported me through the years including family, friends, team members and fans and last but not least my Dad who I'm hoping is looking down on us with pride, miss you papa. From when the lights go out at the start of my final race here in Abu Dhabi to when the chequered flag drops I will give it my all and drive with my heart knowing that whatever happens today I will always know I reached my goal and dream in life to become a Formula One World Champion. I arrived with dreams and leave with memories.

  17. A sad farewellpublished at 11:37 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2016

There's all sorts of feelings swirling around in my stomach today. On the one hand, I'm excited and nervous about the title battle, on the other I'm feeling sad. Sad that this will be the last Formula 1 race that we'll see Jenson Button and Felipe Massa race.

The tears have been flowing in the paddock, with Massa having an emotional gathering last night as colleagues and friends watched some of his best moments, while Button has penned a nice letter on Instagram, which I'll post in full in the next entry.

    Thanks for the memories, guys.

If Lewis Hamilton has any plans up his sleeve to try to disrupt Nico Rosberg’s race, he has not so far been letting on. Why would he? Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff said the team’s “main objective is to interfere the least in the drivers’ world championship but to let the drivers fight it out on track”.

And when the possibility of Hamilton backing Rosberg into the Red Bulls and Ferraris was raised, Wolff said: “We can't interfere into the last race. We have let them race until now, they both know what we deem as being sportsmanlike but then there is a lot at stake. It is the drivers’ world championship to be won or lost. They will have thought about all possibilities. for us, as long as we are not overstepping the mark in terms of what we see as sportsmanlike driving, we are fine. We need to let them go.”
