Fernando Alonso has got 19 races to prove to the world that he is deserving of a top drive.

It is his last year in his contract, he can be confident McLaren's car next year will not be a championship winning car.

He wants to be in the Mercedes. Every time he races it is a place show Tot Wolff what he can do.

I don't think he will go back to Ferrari. Can he get into Red Bull? He is showing people he still has the hunger.

You have to wonder if there is damage to the chassis of that Sauber.

If there is, they wont be able to race that car tomorrow.

Benedict Solo: All these Max hype a year ago is nowhere to be found now. Just proves that it was more of the car than the driver last year for RB.

Antonio Giovinazzi was able to walk away from that crash but it's undone a lot of the impressive work he did in the season opener in Australia.

Lots of work for Sauber to do to get that car back on the track tomorrow.

Verstappen has just walked past me. He kept his helmet on, visor down.

He didn't want to speak to anyone.

If his body language is saying anything, it is screaming fury.

The big news is Verstappen but looking at all of the drivers who didn't make it through, the accident put pay to Grosjean, Palmer and Ocon. It really messed up the end of qualifying for a number of teams.

There is a huge amount of repair worked to be done to that Sauber. A lot of work to be done by the team to get that car ready for tomorrow.

That is a huge amount of damage.

It is a big hit and it has huge implications for qualifying.

Big crash involving Antonio Giovinazzi! He spins at the final corner and clatters into the wall. The Sauber is wrecked but Giovinazzi appears to be OK.

Max Verstappen is back out. He is asked to try an engine mode but if he has any bother switch to another. "Same problem," he reports and switches back before crossing the line with just the 17th quickest time. That's not going to be enough at all.

"Carry on, Max, keep pushing," Verstappen is told.

He's gone one last shot to get himself through.

Three minutes to go and the five in trouble are: Lance Stroll, Esteban Ocon, Jolyon Palmer, Romain Grosjean and Max Verstappen.

The top six are all in the pits and believe they have done enough.

Max Verstappen is the biggest developing story at the moment. He is in a real bit of trouble if he has a power problem.

Uh oh. Max Verstappen could be in a bit of a pickle.

"There's something not right with the engine," he says and immediately pits. He has a right old wobble heading in and is called to the weighbridge.

He is yet to set a time and that's going to cost him some potentially crucial minutes.

At the moment, Fernando Alonso stands a reasonable chance of getting that McLaren through.

That would be a quite a turn up for the books.
