Lewis Hamilton is about half a second quicker than he was in Q1 last year and of course, he went on to take pole position. It looks like he is holding something back too.

Everyone is back in the pits. The front runners have done enough to get through but there will be another lap from those further down the field to try and find improvements.

Jolyon Palmer is right on the bubble. He's currently 15th and is straight back out to try and make sure he can get through to Q2.

Stoffel Vandoorne is the final driver to set a time as he does a 1:32.558 to leap into P12. That should be just enough to put the McLaren into Q2.

The drivers in trouble are Lance Stroll, Kevin Magnussen, Marcus Ericsson, Esteban Ocon and Romain Grosjean.

Haas struggling a bit in Bahrain at the moment.

Oh this is the time I like. The floodlights are on and the cars are kicking up sparks as they power down the main straight. Beautiful.

The times continue to tumble as Lewis Hamilton now goes quickest of all with a 1:30.814, putting him 0.090s ahead of Max Verstappen, although Hamilton did his lap on softs while Vertsappen's was on super-softs.

Lance Stroll enjoys a brief spell at the top of the timesheet but the big hitters are on their fast laps now and Valtteri Bottas goes quickest with 1:31.041.

You are going to have to do a 'mid 1:32 minute lap' in order to get through to Q2 so you are certainly not going through on the medium tyre.

Andrew Benson has been crunching the numbers and the medium tyre is at least four seconds a lap slower than the soft tyre - let alone the super-soft tyre.

Still just those two times on the board at the moment but Lewis Hamilton, Valtteri Bottas, Max Verstappen, Kimi Raikkonen and Daniel Ricciardo are out on the track now. They are all on softs apart from Ricciardo, who is on the super-softs.

Pascal Wehrlein kicks off the session with a 1:33.502 before his team-mate Marcus Ericsson crosses the line soon after. The Swede's time? A 1:33.960, nearly half a second down on Wehrlein.

Great time for Wehrlein on his return to the track!

The two Saubers are straight out, as is the Williams of Lance Stroll.

No one else fancies it just yet.

Former Ferrari driver Gerhard Berger spoke to Tom Clarkson during final practice, and he is surprised at how competitive Ferrari have been this season.

"I never thought they would make such a big jump over the winter," he said. "They did a great work.

"Let's see if Red Bull can join the club now."
