The Williams driver situation is going to be an ongoing story this year. Claire Williams has been defending the decision to employ Sergey Sirotkin alongside Lance Stroll in favour of Robert Kubica, made Williams say on the basis of last November’s Abu Dhabi test and a close analysis of their performance. So what happened on Tuesday? Kubica was quicker than Sirotkin by 0.327secs. Fuel-correct their times for the length of the run and that margin stretches to 0.8secs.

Kubica said the times were “really irrelevant”. But of course it only intensified the questions as to whether Williams might have made a mistake. Was Abu Dhabi a one-off? Was Kubica's difficulty there on one-lap runs caused only by the fact that managing the tyres is notoriously difficult there, and picked the slower driver? Of course, it’s way too early to say that. But we can say that Kubica appears to be getting a little frustrated talking about his injuries. On Tuesday, asked by a TV reporter if he was comfortable in the car and whether there were only so many things he could change, he allowed this frustration to show.

“No,” he said, “because if I keep changing things you will keep saying I have limitations. We should stop talking about this. If I can jump in the car and do the job I think that's fair enough. Of course I have my limitations but I never hide them. The problem is I was too honest with everybody and they kept asking questions, I think we should stop it.

“It's not against you, it's just general. We have things to concentrate (on). I'm actually enjoying my role. I'm happy to give positive messages, not always the same story after many years. So if you can help me with this I think that would be a benefit for everybody.”

He said he had surprised himself by how much he was enjoying his reserve role - after some initial reservations.

Off go the tyre blankets and out goes the Williams. Sergey Sirotkin still leading the way, two hours into the final day of testing.

    Your season predictions

Michael Wunderle: Sergy Sirotkin looks a talent based off these tests. So he could be a darkhorse. But still fancy a significantly improved season for Alonso/Vandoorne and Mclaren.

Daniel Adam: I'm hoping vandoorne takes his chance this year. If Mclaren fail to get on the podium, there will be serious questions regarding their claims of the best chassis on the grid.

Rob:Hope to see Hulkenberg show what he's got, can see a win or two if the car is up to it. Vettel to make up for last year's collapse and win the title.

We have our first title winner shout of the day. Who are you tipping for the top prize?

We've not seen much of Sebastian Vettel. He's done just the one lap so far in the Ferrari but it looks like he is preparing for another run after a lengthy spell in the garage.

  13. Not a rip roaring success?published at 09:39 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2018

It will be interesting to hear how Pierre Gasly rates the halo after today, given he wasn't a massive fan on Tuesday, primarily because it caused him to rip his race suit while getting out.

"I don't like it," he said. "It's just a big mess to get in the car and get out. I think my suit is already broken, so we'll have to ask for many suits from Alpine Stars this year.

"Already, it's the first day, and I have many holes on the back. You need to be a lot backwards to slide in the car.

"It's actually quite weird. Now with all the winglets you have on the Halo, you cannot really pull to get out and touch it. It's quite weird conditions, but it's nothing really important. I just prefer the old cars."

Gasly did, however, find it caused no problems with visibility when driving, adding: "In terms of visibility, it's the same"

    Your season predictions

Andrew Stevens: I reckon we'll see an implosion at Red Bull between Verstappen and Ricciardo. Vandoorne to shine, Raikonnen to be well off the pace.

Joanna Harran: Well deserved wins for @McLarenF1, external this year. Fernando doesn’t need the fastest car, as long as the car is reliable he will do the rest

Adam Johnson: All these McLaren hopefuls, don't see them getting ahead of Renault or Force India.

Meanwhile, Sergey Sirotkin is on the board as a 1:45.364 puts him second.
