Force India's Sergio Perez set the pace in an inconclusive wet first practice at the Italian Grand Prix.

The Mexican set the fastest time by 0.550 seconds from Kimi Raikkonen with the last flying lap of the session. Force India's Esteban Ocon was third from Toro Rosso's Brendon Hartley and Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo.

McLaren reserve driver Lando Norris, a contender for a race seat in 2019, was slowest but ran only in wetter conditions earlier in the session.

McLaren boss Zak Brown said Norris had impressed - he was about 0.3secs off team-mate Fernando Alonso when the two were out at a similar time but ended up 0.8secs slower.

Mill Felt: As expected; Norris in Vandoorne's car dead last. It's the car that is rubish. McLaren should be reasonable and keep Vandoorne for next year.

Kayleigh: Well, at least McLaren weren’t last. Oh wait.

Only four laps for Sebastian Vettel, only six for Lewis Hamilton and only eight for Valtteri Bottas.

Formula 2 driver Lando Norris will be frustrated that the weather saw him only get round nine times and he is 20th, with the slowest two of the normal 19 being the Williams pair, although again they did not do much running.

We are hearing that Daniel Ricciardo's early engine problem was it just going "into a safe mode".

He got back out there and ended fifth, two places ahead of Max Verstappen, with the Toro Rosso pair of Brendon Hartley and Pierre Gasly fourth and sixth respectively.

Just the four laps done for Sebastian Vettel. He ends 17th, with Lewis Hamilton 11th, but neither will be too bothered.

Force India (take two) have only been going since earlier this month. Sergio Perez came fifth in Spa, with Esteban Ocon sixth and today Perez is the quickest, with Ocon third.

OK, it was only them, the Toro Rossos and Kimi Raikkonen on the track at the end, but it will always be in the Formula 1 record books.

Force India fastest. Sergio Perez fastest. Yes, really.

Ocon four hundredths of a second off Kimi Raikkonen, but Sergio Perez then goes fastest!

That is the first time at any practice session or part of qualifying in 2018 where a Mercedes, Ferrari or Red Bull has not been the quickest out there when everyone has set a time.

Charles Leclerc topped a rain-hit third practice in Germany, but only nine cars set a time on that occasion.

    Who for McLaren in 2019?

Bob McFeil‏: If Norris wins F2, he should go to McLaren. If not, Ocon should. Him v Sainz would be great.

Barnard's Star: McLaren have got rid of Magnussen and Perez both who have flourished at other teams. Getting rid of Stoffel feels similar. Should young drivers like Norris avoid McLaren?

  14. Raikkonen now fastestpublished at 11:27 British Summer Time 31 August 2018

    Well, yes, Kimi can.

Raikkonen with a 1:34.742 on a very quickly drying track. Esteban Ocon has just gone second as well.

I still think Lando Nando is the leader, I think Vandoorne has no chance at all. If Ocon didn't have the Mercedes complication, I think they'd take him.

Not many times we have said this this season. Brendon Hartley is fastest so far.

OK, most of the top drivers are not on the track when it is at its quickest but still a decent lap from the New Zealander, who has only picked up two points this season.

Pierre Gasly has finished sixth and ninth in his last two races and the next Red Bull man is second today.

Daniel Ricciardo, the man whose seat he will be taking in 2019, is now third. So that is engine failure, trip to the gravel and now third for the Australian.
