Lewis Hamilton's world title win on Sunday takes his total up to five, joint-second with Juan Manuel Fangio and only two behind Michael Schumacher's record of seven successes.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff tells BBC Radio 5 live: "This puts Lewis among the top three world champions and it is well deserved.

"He has really been the dominant driver this year. It is about celebrating the fifth and then setting the sights on another strong championship."

Lewis Hamilton has two more years with Mercedes, they didn't look great today, but they have had the dominant car. Seven (world titles) is definitely within his capability.

Today, he had a torrid race. It was not an enjoyable 90 minutes race for him.

Sebastian Vettel finished second, but it was not enough to stop Lewis Hamilton winning the world title.

Vettel says: "It is not an easy day, but well deserved (for Hamilton) so congratulations to him and his team they did a superb job.

"We have to accept that and say congratulations. We would have liked to have hung in there longer but it was not to be."

Hamilton has been on the podium in the last nine races, but he didn't make it today.

But it doesn't matter. What a bizarre race that was, with surprise, struggle, and some sadness with unfortunate retirements.

Race winning Max Verstappen says: "It is amazing, the start was the key, in all honest I didn't sleep that well last night. Everyone did an amazing job, we had the right tyres and the team did fantastically.

"It was a shame to lose Daniel and we wanted two of us on the podium."

Verstappen wins, defending his spot from last year.

Vettel drove a great race, and is second which is his first time on the podium since Russia, three races ago.

Raikkonen came in third, our champion from last week.

Two Ferrari's on the podium... we haven't seen that in a while.

Hamilton embraces the Mercedes garage, with big smiles, and big hugs all round. Meanwhile on the podium...

World champion Lewis Hamilton says: "It is a very strange feeling right now. Firstly I want to say a big thank you to all the fans making the Mexican Grand Prix as special as it is.

"Secondly a big thank you to my team. It wasn't won here, just throughout the season and a lot of hard work. To complete this (his fifth world title) when Fangio did it with Mercedes is an incredible feeling and very surreal.

"It was a horrible race, I had a great start, was working my way up then I don't know what was happening. We were struggling Valtteri and I.

"I'm just so grateful to God and I wouldn't be here without all the hard work my dad did and my family."

Vettel put up such a fight, fair play to him for this race, but Lewis Hamilton can salute the fans - this has been such a season from the Brit.
