Which are the best and worst-looking F1 cars of all time?

Time for some more of those eyesore cars that have blighted the F1 world...

It's fair to say Ben Sutherland has absolutely loved our debate, with dozens of entries sent in so here are some of his ugliest cars that have ever been seen in F1.

    BenImage source, .
    Image caption,

Ben says: "Into the swinging 60s and let's start with a piece of hideous grotesquery. This may look like a surfboard with a seat that's been left in a desert for a decade, but it's actually an ENB-Emeryson from 1961, belonging to the late Jules Bianchi's great uncle Lucien."

    BenImage source, .
    Image caption,

Ben says: "Ah, it's the 1970s, The Decade That Taste Forgot. As evidenced by this complete mess of a March 711. Sorry, this car is an actual crime. The wheels are too small; the cockpit looks like a bath chair; the front wing looks like something out of a Christmas cracker. NO."

    BenImage source, .
    Image caption,

Ben says: "While we're on bad cars that looked bad and should feel bad, here is Chris Amon's own 1974 effort. I mean it just looks like a Poundland F1 car before Poundland was invented. If you got it for a present you'd throw it away."

    Top, top work, Ben.

  3. Paddy facing the musicpublished at 14:57 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February 2019

    Chris Medland
    F1 journalist in Barcelona

Paddy Lowe has been a man under pressure this pre-season given the difficulties faced by Williams. The FW42 was late and missed the first two and a half days of the opening test, which did not reflect well on the Chief Technical Officer.

There were some noises of unrest from within the team last week, but once the car started running the focus has been on maximising track time and more encouraging performance than had been suggested initially.

And today Lowe has been facing the music in front of the media, answering questions on the delays, how the car compares to last year and upgrades in Melbourne. Lowe made some optimistic statements about where the car is at this point, although - slightly ironically - he was a little late to the session himself!

Steven Wanless-Kyme: Hard to beat the simple beauty of the Brawn GP car. Bonus points for helping Jenson win his drivers championship!

Steve Cinderby: Best looking car has to be the lotus 97t. Great looking car driven by an icon. These mid eighties cars were ace.

Will Ricciardo live to regret that move from Red Bull to Renault this season? One of many interesting things to look out for over the next few months.

Paul Mason: Doesn't this count as 1 of the worst F1 cars: McLaren MP4/11. Looked and performed like a lead weight.

Daniel Ricciardo, on the C2 (second hardest compound), is now on track and has immediately gone quicker than Valtteri Bottas with a 1:19.759.

  19. A good morning for us - Leclercpublished at 13:39 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February 2019

We've got some quotes from Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who is the fastest man today and will be back out on the track later on.

“The car has felt comfortable from day one," he says. "The balance is pretty nice and it hasn’t changed today, so it’s a positive day, especially after the lack of running yesterday - it’s a good morning for us. It’s good to be on top but it doesn’t mean anything."

Asked what he still needs to do today, he replies: "I think some race sims obviously that we haven’t done fully yet which we’ll probably do this afternoon. This is a bit of the unknown for now because we haven’t done a full one.

“But apart from that I’m pretty happy about the test we have done. The car is solid and I feel pretty comfortable all in it. There is still a lot to learn but it’s a good start.”
