Who is going to win the 1,000th Formula 1 world championship race? Perm any one from four or five, it seems.

As Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas put it after taking his first pole position of 2019: “Looking from Friday, it’s been pretty close among the top three teams, so there are many question marks.”

    Indeed there are.

Who has the best race pace? Can Ferrari split the Mercedes? How will strategy work out? Can Red Bull mix it with the top two teams, as their performance has hinted might be possible at various points during the weekend? This landmark event starts full of intrigue - but with Mercedes in the pound seats locking out the front row.

999 of something. Sounds like a lot, but it depends on the context. 999 blades of grass on a football pitch? Not that much. 999 over tired but hungry kids at a shopping centre when all the fast food places are closed? That's a lot. An awful lot.

But 999 races is a lot. That's a lot of crashes, a lot of spins, a lot of dramatic wins, heartbreaking losses and A LOT of the uses of the words 'for sure'.

There's been some pretty special Formula 1 races among the 999, how will race 1,000 rank among them?
