  2. Top five good for Russell - Wolffpublished at 16:40 Greenwich Mean Time 6 December 2020

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, speaking to Sky Sports about George Russell: "We threw him in cold water and he swam. I expected he would be good. I am not surprised but the level of performance was massive.

"First of all I hope he hasn't got any cars in front of him at the start, only one. We talked about expectations yesterday. I said top five is good for us and that is the same and what I said today. Top five is the minimum."

Third in the constructors' championship is also a very lucrative prize still to play for. McLaren hold that spot but have Lando Norris at the back today, while Racing Point will be hoping Sergio Perez can build on his impressive starting spot of fifth.

Perez has two races to save his Formula 1 career and came second two races ago and was third last week before a late fire ended his race.

    Andrew Benson
    BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

This most hectic of Formula 1 weeks ends today with what promises to be a race to match, over 87 laps on the shortest circuit the sport has used in years.

Valtteri Bottas starts on pole in the Mercedes, with George Russell, after a highly impressive weekend filling in for Lewis Hamilton following the world champion’s coronavirus diagnosis, in the off-line second spot that caused the Finn so much trouble last weekend.

Max Verstappen looms in third place in a Red Bull that looked extremely competitive in the race runs on Friday. The laps will come thick and fast, tyre wear is expected to be a problem, and strategy could be decisive.

Mick Schumacher will graduate to Formula 1 with Haas next year as Formula 2 champion despite a difficult final race of the season in Bahrain earlier on Sunday.

The German finished 18th and won the title by 14 points from Britain's Callum Ilott, who was 10th in the race. Schumacher, the 21-year-old son of F1 legend Michael, said he was "a bit overwhelmed".

"I don't really understand I am champion yet," the Prema driver said. "It's going to take a few days maybe."

He said "owed" the title to his team, adding: "It would sound a lot better if we did a good race today. "Nevertheless, we are champion today and people will forget this race and remember the good times this year."

Schumacher, a Ferrari young driver, was racing close to the front in the early stages of the race but damaged his tyres and had to pit to replace them. He returned to the track to set the fastest lap.

The race was won by India's Jehan Daruvala, from Japanese Yuki Tsunoda, who clinched third in the championship behind Schumacher and Ilott.
