In the wake of the killing of George Floyd in the United States, Hamilton became more strident in the fight against racism. While guest editing the BBC's Today programme on Radio 4 on Boxing Day, he said: "I was not expecting the response that I got."

  11. Perez's tough Red Bull debutpublished at 15:37 British Summer Time 28 March 2021

    Andrew Benson
    BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

Things did not go well for Sergio Perez on his debut for Red Bull. Signed to be closer to team-mate Max Verstappen, he was - the deficit between him and the Dutchman in second qualifying was just over 0.3secs, a significant improvement on the average gaps of his two predecessors. But it was the difference between making it into the top 10 shoot-out and not - Perez starts 11th.

He was not looking for excuses afterwards: “I was really confident that I had the pace in hand, just putting the lap together would have got me through but I didn’t put it together.

“It’s been a difficult weekend overall, getting up to speed with the change of winds and given that it’s a one lap tyre around here, you cannot really do more than one lap. I just have to be patient with myself, put the work in and it should be just a matter of time. I’m not concerned at all.

"Max has shown the level of the car that we’ve got, so it’s important to finish it off, get as many points as possible for the team. I think I just need a different kind of conditions, having a more straightforward qualifying, that sort of thing will just naturally make things better."

  12. Team by teampublished at 15:36 British Summer Time 28 March 2021

Once again Max Verstappen will be wondering where his team-mate is to help him out at the front.

Here's how each team got on in qualifying.

Alfa Romeo: 12th (Giovinazzi) and 14th (Raikkonen).

Alpha Tauri: 5th (Gasly) and 13th (Tsunoda).

Alpine: 9th (Alonso) and 16th (Ocon).

Aston Martin: 10th (Stroll) and 20th (Vettel).

Ferrari: 4th (Leclerc) and 8th (Sainz).

Haas: 18th (Schumacher) and 19th (Mazepin).

McLaren: 6th (Ricciardo) and 7th (Norris).

Mercedes: 2nd (Hamilton) and 3rd (Bottas).

Red Bull: 1st (Verstappen) and 11th (Perez).

Williams: 15th (Russell) and 17th (Latifi).

  13. 'Mercedes will throw the kitchen sink at it'published at 15:35 British Summer Time 28 March 2021

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner, speaking to Sky Sports: "They [Mercedes] will throw the kitchen sink at it.

"I think it will be an interesting fight today. This is a track you can overtake at, strategy is reasonably open. We have this high, gusting wind which is going to be a factor as well."

  14. From 'sensation' to disappointment for Tsunodapublished at 15:31 British Summer Time 28 March 2021

    Andrew Benson
    BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

Yuki Tsunoda caused a sensation on his debut for Alpha Tauri, when the Japanese rookie went second fastest in the first part of qualifying. So it was an underachievement when he was knocked out in the second session and ended up 13th on the grid, after failing to get the best out of the medium tyres the team chose - as did Mercedes and Red Bull.

“I am a bit disappointed to be honest,” Tsunoda said. “I showed I had the pace on the medium tyre in Q1 and I felt confident with our strategy going into Q2, but I just didn’t have the grip during those final laps. It’s a shame to not be starting the race further up the grid but we know the race pace is there, so let’s see what we can do.”

Team-mate Pierre Gasly made up for it, sticking his car fifth on the grid, behind Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari but ahead of both McLarens. Gasly is something of a Bahrain specialist - he qualified and finished fourth there in 2018 but the Alpha Tauri car looks to be a big step forward from last year, helped no doubt by Honda’s big step forward with their new engine.

  15. F1 - a sport for young and oldpublished at 15:31 British Summer Time 28 March 2021

This will make a lot of people feel very, very old indeed (me included).

When Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso made their F1 debuts in 2001, Yuki Tsunoda was only nine months old, now they're on the grid together.

Raikkonen and Alonso also raced against Max Verstappen and Mick Schumacher's fathers.

  17. Alonso clears up misunderstandingpublished at 15:25 British Summer Time 28 March 2021

Fernando Alonso says there was a misunderstanding in an interview in which he appeared to say he believed he was the best driver on the grid.

The Alpine driver says he misheard a question as to whether he was better than the other drivers in Formula 1.

"I never meant to say I was better than Lewis (Hamilton) or Max (Verstappen) or anyone," Alonso said. "Probably I misunderstood the question. I thought it was: 'Are you as good as in 2018 when you left the sport?'"

The issue hangs on Alonso's hearing of one letter in the interview with BBC Sport's Ben Croucher.

The interview caused a stir because it had appeared to be such a strong statement of Alonso's belief that he was the strongest driver.

  20. Canny old fox Alonso impresses in qualifyingpublished at 15:21 British Summer Time 28 March 2021

    Andrew Benson
    BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer

Fernando Alonso, back in F1 after two years away, had looked to be struggling through practice, consistently behind team-mate Esteban Ocon, but canny old fox that he is, he pulled it out in qualifying and was immediately on the pace. He ended up ninth in the Alpine, helped into Q2 by a couple of under-performances elsewhere, perhaps, but satisfied nonetheless, and feeling more was to come

“I was not confident in any of the sessions,” Alonso said. “I was struggling to feel the rear of the car in the windy conditions. I was able to attack and feel the car a little bit better (in qualifying). It was fun, to drive these cars with low fuel and the peak grip of the tyres, the qualifying performance is something amazing. The race you have to pace yourself with tyre management but the qualifying is amazing.”

Alonso says he still feels as if he is playing himself back in: “Even the same [in the race] the first time, formation lap, lights, first corner. It sounds simple things for a race driver but after two years it’s going to feel like new for me. Pit stops under two seconds. All these things I will have to live it for the very first time again.

“I need the information, I need to feel how the tyre degradation is going, how the balance changes. A lot of people around me on the grid have more knowledge of those things. I want to have those things in the pocket [after the race]. If that’s P7 or P11 OK. If it’s P15, OK; I just want that information.”

Ocon made a mistake on his first run in Q1, when he was 0.5secs off Alonso, and was caught out by yellow flags on his second. But he acknowledged that Alonso was “quick” in that session and reckoned it “would have been close” between them.
