Sergio Perez was caught out in Q2 in Bahrain trying to get through on the mediums, so maybe this is a cautious approach from the driver, more so than a team strategic decision.

Perez is probably saying 'look, just get me into Q3 and I can start at the sharp end of a race-leading battle' whereas he was trying to charge through the midfield in Bahrain.

Lando Norris to the top, on the softs and 0.099 better than Lewis Hamilton on the mediums.

George Russell currently 10th, ahead of Daniel Ricciardo, Fernando Alonso, Esteban Ocon, Nicholas Latifi with no time from Sebastian Vettel.

What a story it would be if it stays that way for the next seven and a half minutes.

William Budd: This year is going to be the making of Lando. If he can get a win this year, it’ll be clear to everyone that he’s a top driver.

Andrew Ogley: Old school circuits better than modern street circuits any weekend of the month. Just putting it out there.

Sebastian Vettel with a time deleted. Ten minutes left for something legal.

The Mercedes pair on the mediums, as is Max Verstappen and, rather optimistically, both Williams. Softs for everyone else so a split strategy for Red Bull with Perez on different tyres to his team-mate.

Q2 is over 15 minutes. If you finish in the top 10 and advance into Q3 then the tyres you set your best time on are the tyres you start the race on.

  8. 'Frustrated with the mistake'published at 13:37 British Summer Time 17 April 2021

Alpha Tauri's Yuki Tsunoda, who crashed at the start of Q1, speaking to Sky Sports: "Really sorry for the team and I'm frustrated with the mistake. We just have to reset for tomorrow.

"I don't have any pain but it looks pretty bad at the back of the car. We will have to prepare properly tomorrow.

"Tomorrow is probably going to be different conditions, there could be rain, so we need to put it all together and don't do mistakes like today. I just have to adapt to the conditions and keep pushing until the end."

A bad day for Alfa Romeo and Haas as both cars drop out really early on.

Alonso benefits from the Tsunoda crash with the two-time world champion squeezing through in 15th.

Daniel Eckersly: Both Williams into Q2 on merit, you LOVE to see it.

  12. 'Latifi has been dialled in'published at 13:33 British Summer Time 17 April 2021

What a job from Nicholas Latifi and George Russell to get through into Q2.

Latifi has been two tenths quicker than Russell and he's been there all weekend - and it's not a huge surprise, he's been dialled in.

  13. Out in Q1published at 13:33 British Summer Time 17 April 2021

    • 16. Kimi Raikkonen (Alfa Romeo)
    • 17. Antonio Giovinazzi (Alfa Romeo)
    • 18. Mick Schumacher (Haas)
    • 19. Nikita Mazepin (Haas)
    • 20. Yuki Tsunoda (Alpha Tauri, no time)

Both Williams advance. Alonso moves on, but only just.

Nikita Mazepin is not making many friends this season he broke a "gentleman's agreement" in the last qualifying in Bahrain by jumping ahead of cars in a queue and then spinning, messing up the hopes of a few drivers.

Now today he's got in the way of Antonio Giovinazzi.

  17. 'Schumacher has to be a hero in a slow car'published at 13:27 British Summer Time 17 April 2021

    Jolyon Palmer
Former Renault driver on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

Mick Schumacher has to take a leaf out of George Russell's book - who has been very impressive in the Williams and then showed what he can do when he stepped in for Lewis Hamilton last year in the Mercedes.

Mick has to put himself in that same bracket. Make himself a hero in a slower car and right now, he's done everything just about fine. He's really been ahead of team-mate Nikita Mazepin - and that's what you have to do.

With Russell moving up, that has Kimi Raikkonen in the bottom five at the moment.

  19. Postpublished at 13:25 British Summer Time 17 April 2021

Russell moves up to 14th, but will that be enough? Just over two minutes left.

  20. Postpublished at 13:23 British Summer Time 17 April 2021

Work to do for George Russell. He's down in 19th. He normally out-qualifies his team-mate and has four minutes to improve.
