As well as his mishap at Turn 4 during the opening laps of the race, world champion Max Verstappen had to also overcome issues with a faulty DRS overtaking aid.

"Definitely not the smoothest of days but we'll take that!" he tweeted.

The Dutchman added: "We have to be realistic; without Charles' retirement, he probably would have won the race so we have to keep on working to make sure we try and improve the car."

The cries of "no! no!" from the radio of Charles Leclerc opened the door for Red Bull's Max Verstappen to take his fourth win of the 2022 season - and third in a row - at the Spanish Grand Prix.

Polesitter Leclerc was out in front in his Ferrari with a nearly 30-second advantage following Verstappen's gravel spin on lap nine.

But an engine failure 27 laps in saw Leclerc retire from the race and by the end of the day, his title lead had been cut to just six points.

Lando Norris had to see medics after the race in Spain last weekend, having been weakened by tonsillitis. He has been cleared to compete in Monaco, but was excused from media duties on Friday morning so the team could “focus on making sure he is in the best possible condition to drive”. What that means is that he still needs to rest as much as possible.

It's difficult to concentrate at work when you're feeling quite poorly - even more of a challenge when your day job involves driving a Formula 1 car.

Lando Norris was excused from his media duties following his P8 finish at the Spanish Grand Prix and revealed he had been suffering from a bout of tonsillitis.

The McLaren driver added the weekend in Barcelona was "one of the hardest races" he had ever done.

With such a physical test on the horizon at the tight and twisty circuit, will we see him in the car?...

  6. Hellopublished at 12:33 British Summer Time 27 May 2022

No time to rest for any of us as it's straight into all things historic Monaco off the back of Barcelona's outing seven days ago.

First practice gets under way at 13:00 BST.

Second practice will go green at 16:00 BST.

We head over to McLaren HQ straight out of the gate....

  7. Prince of Monacopublished at 12:30 British Summer Time 27 May 2022

After his heartbreak in Spain, Charles Leclerc returns home to the comforts of his Monaco stomping ground.

When it comes to racing, however, the Monte Carlo playground hasn't exactly been kind to the Monegasque native.

With Max Verstappen now top of the drivers' championship following his victory at last weekend's Spanish Grand Prix, will the Principality be crowning a new prince come the chequered flag on Sunday?
