Max Verstappen is closing in on his first win of the 2023 season but the fastest lap marker is currently camped with the Alpine of Pierre Gasly. A better end than it was start for the Frenchman as he's in the points in ninth position having started plum last.

Alonso: "Will Lance [Stroll] catch them?"

Team: "Lance is four seconds back from Hamilton. I think it is tough with three to go after this one."

Alonso: "Copy, still amazing."

Pierre Gasly has made it up to P9 from last on the grid so he has done a solid job this afternoon.

Nico Hulkenberg is making his return to the grid after being let go by Renault in 2019, so the stewards decided to give him a little present: a five-second time penalty for exceeding track limits to many times. The Haas driver is down in 15th place.

The Aston Martin is under no pressure from Carlos Sainz in the Ferrari, so just a few more laps and he can shower that car with champagne from the podium.

It is tough when you see your main title protagonist disappear into the distance in front of you and there is nothing you can do about it. Charles Leclerc's skill set is very similar to Max Verstappen but Verstappen can just disappear into the distance. It is demoralising. When the car lets you down when you are doing the best you can it just darkens the mood further.

Red Bull suffered a double DNF here in Bahrain 12 months ago but the only double they'll be experiencing in Sakhir this year - if there are no spectacular disasters - is a podium one-two.

Lewis Hamilton has not had confidence in the package. He has been a bit down with the press, saying he is not sure if they are going in the right direction. A P4 would really cheer him up. I think that is the best he can achieve in this race.

Lando Norris' trips to the pits is to manage an ongoing power unit issue for the McLaren. The Briton is released back out into the wild in 17th spot.

Nervous shaking feet over at the Ferrari garage. The Italian team have already lost one driver and now Carlos Sainz has lost his podium place.

Car number 44 is also prowling behind the SF-23 as Lewis Hamilton aims to finish in the top four.

It's the worst feeling when you are running out of tyres. When you are struggling for grip you can't brake well or exit well. It is all so difficult.
