There's a lot of stress going on in these teams this weekend. We are just seeing Yuki Tsunoda finding his way wide through the mid-corner of the changed section in Turns 12 and 13, so he really was one of the victims of that circuit change.

In his desperation to make it through to SQ2, Lance Stroll pushed too hard at Turn Five and is once again booted out in an opening qualifying session.

Over at Alpha Tauri, Yuki Tsunoda's radio message is explosive as the Japanese driver fails to progress past the first stage of a sprint shootout this season.

Lots of drivers on the radio questioning their team, we had George Russell demanding information from the team about what his run plan was, Nico Hulkenberg has been chatting to his engineer saying 'I think we should stay in sequence' and then some confusion for Lando Norris with his engineer. It's really interesting, a lot of discussion going on, it makes me feel that people are a little bit stressed, it's all a bit fast and furious.

Williams have two drivers going through to SQ2 but only just. Logan Sargeant is above Alex Albon but oh! Both drop back down into the bottom five. Sargeant has his lap time deleted.

Charles Leclerc can't keep his Ferrari on track and his engineer is quick to tell the Monegasque driver "that was the wind into Turn Five".

Lance Stroll is flirting with another qualifying blow as he drops places in the bottom five and is now in P18. Charles Leclerc has also slipped into the relegation zone.

The Red Bull just tracking exactly where Max Verstappen points it as though it's reading his mind through that final sector there, the rear just coming with the direction of the steering wheel.

Just keep the phrase 'lap time deleted' at the forefront of your mind. Lewis Hamilton is the latest driver to fall foul but is safe for now in P11. Fernando Alonso lifts his Aston Martin up into fifth spot.

Five minutes to go but a group of drivers have just had their lap times deleted for track limits. Max Verstappen has gone top of the timesheets but Lando Norris creeps up behind the Red Bull man to slot into second.

It's a huge and stark change between when the sun goes down, the amount of surface temperature that bleeds away the sun, still very much pounding down on this recently relayed tarmac.

The medium tyres are bolted on for the drivers who have entered the track in this first sprint shootout session. George Russell has gone quickest with a 1:26.359 but the Mercedes man was pushing his engineer to make a rapid decision on his out lap.

I like the fact that the drivers don't know what the car is going to do from corner to corner, these are 20 of the best drivers in the world. You want to see them really push this is what it's all about but obviously the tyre issue is a different argument altogether, but I like the fact that there is difficulty and challenges for the drivers.

Sprint weekends are a little bit different in 2023.

The 'sprint' - a shorter race held on Saturday - has been made independent of the grand prix and will have its own qualifying session, known as the 'sprint shootout'.

Qualifying to set the grid for the main grand prix will be held on Friday.

There will then be a shorter qualifying session, to the same knockout format, on Saturday to set the sprint grid.

The 'sprint' qualifying will have three sessions, with the slowest five cars eliminated at the end of the first two, but the sessions will be cut to just 12, 10 and eight minutes. The three sessions in a standard qualifying run for 18, 15 and 12 minutes, respectively.

Top eight drivers score points in the sprint to add to their championship tally.

The drivers have got a much better feel for the balance as it's going to be in a few moments time in the sprint shootout. We've obviously lost two of the most high speed apexes on the circuit, so those have been slowed significantly in terms of there speed. Cars like the McLaren will lose slight benefit around the lap because those are the cars that will take more speed through those apexes perhaps, and at the very highest of speed, so it will slightly adjust the pecking order.

  18. 'I just messed it up' - Norrispublished at 14:17 British Summer Time 7 October 2023

Lando Norris, like Lance Stroll, looked distraught when he had to face the TV cameras after qualifying.

How was the McLaren driver feeling following his shift from second down to 10th place for Sunday's race? Well, he also used some fruity language to describe his emotions.

"I just had a correction on oversteer and went off," said Norris, adding the pace of the car had been "mint".

"[The team] have done a good job. I just messed it up," he said.

As for team-mate Oscar Piastri, the Australian said the team would "get another crack at it tomorrow".

The 22-year-old added: "Obviously a shame. I just pushed a little bit hard on the last lap. A shame because the car looked quick."

The learning curve has ended but not before we get to hear another feisty radio message between Max Verstappen and his engineer Gianpiero Lambiase. The nearly three-time world champion skips over the gravel and the team are worried about the floor. Understandably, as the sprint shootout is only 10 minutes away.
