    It's Giants against FIFE FLYERS

And the Giants now know their opponents in the Challenge Cup Final on 1 March at the SSE Arena - it's congratulations to the Fife Flyers who come from 3-0 down in Sheffield to tie the second leg 3-3 only to see Sheffield tie the aggregate score at 6-6 with 18 seconds to go. Overtime couldn't separate them and with the final penalty shot of the shootout Fife score and will now head try and stop Belfast from defending the Challenge Cup.

  2. GIANTS GO TOP OF LEAGUE WITH STATEMENT WINpublished at 22:09 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2023

    Guildford Flames 1-6 Belfast Giants

No goals in the final period and thankfully no further frustrations taken out on the ice.

Giants move two points clear of Guildford at the top of the Elite League and this was a statement win for Adam Keefe's side.

They went behind early, never panicked and then took Guildford apart in the second period and the league also saw another side of the Flames they haven't seen before and that was the way they reacted under pressure of a title chase. They've never been in this position before and they have 2 games in hand on the Giants so no panic yet but they face big challenges ahead and they need to have a better temperament because every game is so big from this moment onwards.

The Giants will have concerns over David Goodwin's injury and will anxiously await news.

The Giants are back home on Saturday night for a clash with the Glasgow Clan.

Thanks for following along tonight - we'll be back for the 7pm face-off in Belfast on Saturday.

  3. TEN MINUTES TO GO - NO FURTHER GOALS (OR FIGHTS)published at 21:49 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2023

    Guildford Flames 1-6 Belfast Giants

It has the feel that the teams are going through the motions but both sides have had chances to score. No David Goodwin on the ice for the Giants however - precautionary or serious? We will find out later on.

  4. THIRD PERIOD UNDERWAY - WILL COOLER HEADS PREVAIL?published at 21:35 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2023

    Guildford Flames 1-6 Belfast Giants

Both benches short of players as the final period gets underway. Of more concern to the Giants will be how badly injured is David Goodwin? He was helped from the ice after that heavy hit.

Will we see more tempers flaring or will calmer heads prevail?

  5. GIANTS LEAD COMFORTABLY AS FLAMES DISCIPLINE DESERTS THEMpublished at 21:21 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2023

    Guildford Flames 1-6 Belfast Giants

I have no idea where to begin with that period. Giants clinical in front of goal and the Flames letting their frustration boil over. One can only speculate what sparked it all off but it appeared the Giants over-celebrating may have been the reason and the Flames reacted to it.

Giants coach Adam Keefe will just want to get through the final period unscathed. Bar a disaster the points are his but he'll want to avoid injuries.

Flames coach Paul Dixon will be left wondering what has gone on after such a good start to the game by his side. They know they are going to be tested over the next few weeks with some of the biggest games in the club's history and his players haven't risen to that challenge this evening.

    OTHER PENALTIES CALLED

After the last get together on the ice Giants Mark Cooper also thrown out of the game for spearing while Flames Kyle Locke got 2+5+10 for instigating and fighting.

The Elite League office may be looking at video after this game for further disciplinary action.

  6. MORE FIGHTS AND PENALTIES AS DISCIPLINE GOESpublished at 21:13 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2023

    Guildford Flames 1-6 Belfast Giants

Big hit on Giants captain David Goodwin leaves him on the ice. Fights break out including Bradley Lalonde who takes his frustration out on Sam Ruopp.

More penalties being assessed. Sam Marklund gets tossed out of the game and Giants end period on the powerplay.

  7. GOAL! BAST MAKES IT 6-1 AND THEN GETS PENALTYpublished at 21:00 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2023

    Guildford Flames 1-6 Belfast Giants

Gabe Bast makes it 6-1 skating 4-on-4, asks the referee if he can celebrate and whatever he said it gets him an immediate penalty.

  8. GOAL! GIANTS MAKE IT 5-1 AS BRAWL BREAKS OUTpublished at 20:53 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2023

    Guildford Flames 1-5 Belfast Giants

Guildford beginning to lose a bit of self-control. Sam Marklund takes a penalty full of frustration and Lewis Hook buries the Giants fifth goal on the powerplay.

Hook then gets chased by Flames captain Brett Ferguson and a mass brawl breaks out in front of the Giants bench.

Penalties being assessed. Brett Ferguson and Ben Lake thrown out of the game and neither coach appears happy. Lewis Hook and Eamon McAdam assessed penalties as well.

Just over halfway through the game.

  9. GOAL! GRANT COOPER HAMMERS HOME GIANTS FOURTHpublished at 20:47 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2023

    Guildford Flames 1-4 Belfast Giants

Can't help but feel the break up in play and the scuffles aren't helping the Flames. It's not their game and the frustration will only continue to build after Steve Owre's little touch pass finds Grant Cooper who hammers a shot past McAdam.

  10. TEMPERS HEIGHTEN AS PENALTIES CALLEDpublished at 20:45 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2023

    Guildford Flames 1-3 Belfast Giants

Giants go digging for the puck around McAdam's net. Flames not happy and Owen Griffiths and Ben Lake exchange a few punches and then head to the penalty box.

    4-on-4 hockey for two minutes

  11. GOAL! CONWAY MAKES IT 3-1 GIANTSpublished at 20:41 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2023

    Guildford Flames 1-3 Belfast Giants

Brilliantly worked goal by the Giants. Great puck movement involving Steve Owre and David Goodwin who finds Scott Conway between the hash marks and he picks his spot, beats McAdam and then stares the netminder down afterwards.

  12. GIANTS KILL EARLY FLAMES POWERPLAYpublished at 20:35 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2023

    Guildford Flames 1-2 Belfast Giants

Giants with an excellent penalty kill at the start of the second period. Jeff Baum with a couple of shot blocks and Beskorowany with a couple of saves.

  13. PUCK DROPPED ON SECOND PERIODpublished at 20:28 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2023

    Guildford Flames 1-2 Belfast Giants

Three of the four meetings in the Elite League between these two sides have been one-goal games and this looks like it could very well be another.

  14. GIANTS LEAD AFTER FIRST PERIODpublished at 20:15 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2023

    Guildford Flames 1-2 Belfast Giants

Terrific first period. Flames control the game, take the lead, should have been further ahead and then Giants equalise.

Ciaran Long and Kyle Locke then exchange pleasantries and both get sent to feel shame in the penalty box for two minutes and then Ben O'Connor takes a slashing call as the Giants come on strongly near the end and with the man advantage the visitors take the lead.

The Giants still struggling with the speed of the Flames but despite conceding an early goal Tyler Beskorowany has made a number of stops including one on a breakaway from Ryan Tait and another from Ian McNulty after another Giants turnover.

And it looks like it will be the Sheffield Steelers heading to Belfast next month for the Challenge Cup final. They lead Fife 3-0 after the first period and 5-3 on aggregate in the semi-final second leg.

  15. GOAL! LATE POWERPLAY MARKER FOR GIANTSpublished at 20:10 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2023

    Guildford Flames 1-2 Belfast Giants

Ten seconds remaining in the opening period and the Giants have come from behind. Skating 4-on-3 Scott Conway wins a face-off directly to Gabe Bast who fires it past McAdam.

  16. GOAL! LONG EQUALISES FOR GIANTSpublished at 19:57 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2023

    Guildford Flames 1-1 Belfast Giants

Flames don't score on the powerplay but they came mighty close on a couple of occasions but slightly against the run of play Ciaran Long wins a battle along the boards and skates to the top of the left circle and rips a stunner past Eamon McAdam. Giants back on level terms

  17. LALONDE ALMOST MAKES IT TWO FOR FLAMESpublished at 19:47 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2023

    Guildford Flames 1-0 Belfast Giants

Another odd man rush for the Flames and somehow Bradley Lalonde hits the side of the net when it looked easier to score. Giants looking a little rattled early on.

    12:26 to go opening period

  18. GOAL! FLAMES TAKE THE LEADpublished at 19:41 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2023

    Guildford Flames 1-0 Belfast Giants

Giants turn the puck over in their own zone, it leads to a 3-on-1 and Ryan Tait takes advantage by skating into the slot and backhanding a shot past Tyler Beskorowany. Great start for the home side.

  19. GAME ON! FIRST PERIOD UNDERWAYpublished at 19:34 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2023

    Guildford Flames 0-0 Belfast Giants

Here we go - Giants were very good the last time they visited the Spectrum Arena winning 4-0. Flames have only lost 4 times in 18 games at home this season.

  20. TOP TWO SCORERS GO UP AGAINST EACH OTHERpublished at 19:29 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2023
