Summary

  • Belfast Giants v Sheffield Steelers (19:00)

  1. BELFAST TAKE GIANT STEP TOWARDS TITLEpublished at 21:43 Greenwich Mean Time 24 March 2023

    Belfast Giants 8-2 Sheffield Steelers

This was as comprehensive a win and performance from the Belfast Giants as the scoreline suggests.

With the victory the Giants can clinch the Elite League title on home ice tomorrow night with a win over the Manchester Storm and a Guildford Flames loss in Dundee.

It's now a two-horse race - the Elite League champions will be Belfast or Guildford which means the Giants by finishing at least second have also clinched Champions League Hockey next season as Guildford's arena doesn't meet CHL requirements.

So it could all end on Saturday night.

We'll be back from 6.45pm with updates from both games....

  20. Elite League Standingspublished at 18:58 Greenwich Mean Time 24 March 2023

So a Giants win tonight would put them in a position to win the Elite League title tomorrow night if they beat Manchester and Guildford lose in Dundee because despite the fact that Belfast and Guildford could still end up on the same number of points the Giants have more wins in regulation than the Flames and so would retain the trophy.

It would also eliminate the Steelers and Devils from the title race.

However a Steelers victory throws the championship wide open especially as Guildford visit Belfast next Saturday while two of Sheffield's last three games are against Cardiff.

It's been such an exciting four-team race over the past two months who knows what might happen over the next two weekends.
