Summary

  • Belfast Giants v Manchester Storm (19:00 GMT)

  1. Giants win after shootoutpublished at 21:38 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2023

Belfast Giants 3-2 Manchester Storm (after shootout)

Ben Lake and Matty McLeod scored in the shootout and Tyler Beskorowany shut the door as the Giants took it 2-1 and with it a four-point weekend.

The Storm will feel hard done by only taking a point from the weekend as they played hard and were unlucky as well.

Will the Giants look back on this weekend as one that finally kickstarted their title challenge?

There is still a lot of work to be done as scoring remains at a premium.

Tyler Beskorowany can't keep bailing them out. They need more offence.

This weekend four goals were enough to win two games.

Next up the second leg of the Challenge Cup quarter-final on Wednesday night against Coventry Blaze with the score tied at 1-1 after the first leg

  6. GOAL! Murphy gives Storm the leadpublished at 20:53 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2023

    Belfast Giants 1-2 Manchester Storm

Based on the start to the final period the Storm want this win more.

They're winning puck battles, clogging up the neutral zone and stopping the Giants skating through them.

And now they have the lead as Matt Murphy is left all alone to score the go ahead goal.

  9. All square after two in Belfastpublished at 20:31 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2023

    Belfast Giants 1-1 Manchester Storm

A disappointing second period for the Giants sees the Storm tie the game late in proceedings.

After starting the period with a goal ruled out following a review, the hosts have not been able to kick on. This is despite a power play midway through the session.

Just before the break, Tyler Hinam reacted quickly to stab home a rebound following a reaction save from Tyler Beskorowany.

Adam Keefe will be wanting a lot more from his side as we head into the final 20 minutes.

  10. GOAL! Storm tie the gamepublished at 20:26 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2023

    Belfast Giants 1-1 Manchester Storm

With two left on the clock in the second period, the visitors level. Tyler Hinam is first to react after Beskorowany stopped Matt Murphy's rasper from the blue line.

You can't say the Storm haven't deserved this.

  11. Giants waste powerplaypublished at 20:18 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2023

    Belfast Giants 1-0 Manchester Storm

Just like last night, it's another low-scoring affair so far. After Manchester's Callum Fryer was sat down for holding, the hosts can't capitalise.

Just before that, Johnny Corneil slid in front of Beskorowany but couldn't divert the puck on the net.

We have a stoppage here to repair some perspex and Adam Keefe will be using the break to urge more from his side.

  12. Attack at a premium in the secondpublished at 20:10 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2023

    Belfast Giants 1-0 Manchester Storm

No more goals as we reach the midway point of the second period.

The Storm almost levelled when Sam Tremblay deflected a shot just past the post while, at the other end, Bobby MacIntyre was denied by Weninger.

  13. Super save thwarts Giantspublished at 20:02 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2023

    Belfast Giants 1-0 Manchester Storm

Ben Lake thought he had the Giants' second but, after review, an incredible behind-the-back save from Evan Weninger stopped the puck from crossing the line.

Tyler Beskorowany has been far from a bystander in the opening throes of the second with the Storm getting some shots in but the Giants' goalie has kept the visitors at bay.

  15. Giants lead after exciting first twenty minutespublished at 19:36 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2023

    Belfast Giants 1-0 Manchester Storm

Not sure how there has only been the one goal in that period.

Both coaches will be pleased with their sides efforts. Manchester haven't solved Beskorowany yet and the Giants have continued their strong defensive performance from last night. That's not to say the visitors haven't had opportunities because they have.

The Giants could have had a couple more goals and have wasted a couple of clear cut Grade A chances but they are playing well.

  16. Great chances for both sidespublished at 19:26 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2023

    Belfast Giants 1-0 Manchester Storm

It's end-to-end as both sides go close.

Storm almost equalise when Loren Ulett is denied by a great Tyler Beskorowany save.

At the other end a blast from Davy Phillips from the right point squeezes through the pads of Evan Weninger but is cleared off the line.

    Belfast Giants 1-0 Manchester Storm

Much better period than we saw last night.

Both sides with chances and there's a little edge to the game as well. A couple of hefty hits as well.

  18. GOAL! Giants take the lead through Tedescopublished at 19:09 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2023

    Belfast Giants 1-0 Manchester Storm

The teddy bears are raining down on the ice after the Giants take the lead.

Matty McLeod poke checks the puck away, it's picked up by Quinn Preston who puts it on a plate for Daniel Tedesco to finish.

Cue the teddy toss for charity - a great annual event and it's going to take a while to clear the ice.
