    Tuuli wins first MotoE Prix

Finland’s Niki Tuuli made history as the winner of the first Moto E Grand Prix at Sachsenring, Germany, last weekend as the new electric bike series got under way after several setbacks.

The series should have started in May in Jerez, but a fire in the paddock during testing (which damaged all the 150mph electric bikes beyond repair) meant the Spanish Moto E event had to be cancelled.

Tuuli held off 17 opponents at Sachsenring after starting from pole, beating GB’s Bradley Smith and France’s Mike Di Meglio into second and third respectively. Spain’s Maria Herrera, the only woman in the race, finished 16th.

The next race is scheduled for Austria in August, the first of five more races this season.

Formula E: Jean-Eric Vergne holds on to win chaotic Bern E-Prix

Frenchman Jean-Eric Vergne won a controversial Swiss E-Prix to close in on the Formula E championship title.

The red flag was waved 56 seconds into the race, as Max Gunther caught the rear of Pascal Wehrlein into Turn 13 - causing a mass-car pile up.

As drivers flew into Wehrlein's stranded Mahindra, Envision Virgin Racing's Robin Frijns spun into the wall causing problems further back, and subsequently retired with damage.

Brazilian driver Lucas Di Grassi avoided the pile-up by running down an escape road, emerging fourth from 18th. But a full-course red flag was announced and the session was stopped for 40 minutes.

Pole sitter Jean-Eric Vergne, led the race from the restart taking the 28 points on offer - claiming his third win this season - stretching his title lead to 32 points.

A wet ending to the race saw Mitch Evans and Sebastian Buemi follow in second and third respectively.

  12. Vergne and Techeetah the ones to beatpublished at 15:22 British Summer Time 10 July 2019

With a 32-point lead in the standings and just two races left, the Formula E drivers’ title looks like Jean-Eric Vergne’s to lose.

With JEV’s team-mate Andre Lotterer poised in fourth place with just a one-point deficit to make up to get into third, DS Techeetah are looking locked-in for the constructors’ championship as well, having scored 159 points in the last six races.

Lotterer might even be a main rival to Vergne but a 22-second penalty handed to him in the last race – the Swiss E-Prix in Bern – dropped him to 14th place from fourth to leave him 44 points off the lead in the championship.

Vergne has hit his best form at the end of a season when he followed up an early blip of three races without a score with three wins in the last six races to post a 32-point lead as the tour heads to New York for its finale.

  13. What is Formula E?published at 15:22 British Summer Time 10 July 2019

The FIA Formula E Championship is the world’s first all-electric single seater series and is in its fifth season of competition.

The 13-race calendar started in December and will run until July, finishing with two races in two days in New York City.

A new car has been introduced this season that has a longer battery life, eliminating the need to change cars during the race, while BMW and Nissan have joined the rapidly growing list of manufacturers.

The 45-minute long races feature a number of ways to add extra excitement, with drivers able to use ‘Attack Mode’ and ‘Fan Boost’ to help overtaking while there are bonus points for pole position and fastest lap.

  14. Extreme E SUV unveiledpublished at 15:12 British Summer Time 10 July 2019

Goodwood’s Festival of Speed was a good weekend for electric cars with the unveiling of the Odyssey 21, the all-terrain vehicle for Formula E’s Extreme E series, which is set to debut in 2021.

Described as “an electric beast” by Formula E founder Alejandro Agag, is built by French company Spark and will initially use batteries made by Williams F1, although hydrogen power cells are planned for the future.

The ‘beast’ can reach 60mph in four seconds and has a range of 200km and a top speed of 125mph. The idea is for the series to be transported to areas affected by environmental damage to enhance awareness.

“We believe in any technology that can power an electric motor,” said Agag. “The goal here is clean mobility" said Agag, who says he has already identified three of the venues that will be visited by the series, that will be transported on a specially-fitted ship.

  15. Electric car sets Goodwood recordpublished at 15:12 British Summer Time 10 July 2019

The rise of electric racing car technology was demonstrated at last weekend’s Goodwood Festival of Speed when a 20-year-old record set by a McLaren Formula One car was smashed by Volkswagen’s ID.R sportscar.

The previous best for the famous hill climb at Goodwood, 41.6 seconds, had been set by former F1 driver Nick Heidfeld in 1999 in a McLaren MP4/13.

That mark had remained obstinately unbeaten until the Volkswagen, with two-time Le Mans winner Romain Dumas at the wheel, reduced it to 41.18 seconds

The VW ID.R already holds the best time for an electric car at Goodwood and added the hill climb to its leading electric times for the Pike Peaks limb in Colorado and Germany’s Nurburgring.
