  1. Until tomorrowpublished at 15:53 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2020

    Monaghan 1-17 Cavan 2-15

They do say start as you mean to go on...

Tomorrow, BBC Two NI, Donegal v Tyrone followed by Derry v Armagh.

There will also be highlights of today's game and, trust me, they're worth a watch.

It's not how we imagined, and today certainly was an occasion that deserved a crowd, but the Championship is back. What a way to start.

  2. Cavan march onpublished at 15:46 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2020

    Monaghan 1-17 Cavan 2-15

It's Antrim next week for Cavan, their show goes on and if it is a sign of things to come, an exciting few weeks lie ahead.

Escapism at its finest. Some moments of individual brilliance, some inexplicable decisions as well, but all in it was totally absorbing.

  3. How about thatpublished at 15:39 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2020

    Monaghan 1-17 Cavan 2-15

Words fail me. It's just crazy, sport is absolutely mad.

That was the first game of the Championship and it's hard to see what other drama can follow. That was utterly incredible.

Beggan looked to have sent it to penalties but Raymond Galligan, my goodness me, talk about holding your nerve.

Monaghan's 2020 is over, and they only have themselves to blame having been in command with 10 minutes remaining.

Cavan have knocked them out of Ulster for the second year running.

  4. GALLIGAN WINS ITpublished at 15:37 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2020

    Monaghan 1-17 Cavan 2-15

    Oh this is utter insanity.

Thomas Galligan leaps like a salmon and gathers Raymond's kick out. Calls the mark and up comes Raymond to line-up the kick from just inside the Monaghan half.

RAYMOND GALLIGAN WINS IT WITH A 55M FREE!

What a start to the Championship, crazy.

  5. Beggan keeps his headpublished at 15:35 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2020

    Monaghan 1-17 Cavan 2-14

Monaghan throw the kitchen sink forward, and win a free just inside the 45. The wind isn't as strong as it was earlier, but there's still a big old gust.

Rory Beggan, we haven't seen him take a free all day. How about this? Last minute to keep his side in the Championship.

    He absolutely nails it.

    Penalties?

  6. Last chance saloonpublished at 15:32 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2020

Monaghan look absolutely shattered, can they muster one last rally to send this to penalties?

    Monaghan 1-16 Cavan 2-14

  8. GOAL CAVANpublished at 15:28 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2020

    Monaghan 1-16 Cavan 2-13

    THOMAS GALLIGAN, OFFICIAL SUPER-SUB.

Mazy run and he fists across to Martin Reilly to palm in. There are shouts of a square ball but the officials are having none of it.

Cavan lead only for 30 seconds though, Monaghan go up the other end and knock over a free.

It's not going to be penalties in the first game, is it?

  9. Half-time of extra-timepublished at 15:18 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2020

  10. Woods steps uppublished at 15:17 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2020

    Monaghan 1-15 Cavan 1-13

Another really important score for Monaghan, Andrew Woods is ice cool in slotting over the bar.

Each point is like gold dust as Monaghan look to see out this game with a man down.

  11. Red card Monaghanpublished at 15:16 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2020

    Monaghan 1-14 Cavan 1-13

Nearing the end of the first of two 10 minutes periods and it has been thoroughly uneventful.

That is until Christopher McGuinness is shown a red card. There has been something off the ball which for now remains a mystery. Monaghan are down to 14.

Cavan's approach has shed some light on their decision to play against the wind in the opening 10. Means they can go for the win in the final stretch with the breeze at their backs.

Colin Walshe does provide a bright moment for Monaghan though, a wonderful point to at least give his side something to defend.

  12. Tension in the windpublished at 15:10 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2020

    Monaghan 1-13 Cavan 1-13

It's a low-key opening as Monaghan register a couple of attempts, but neither of them are struck with any conviction and are easy gathers for Raymond Galligan.

Who's going to nudge in front?

  13. Extra-time beginspublished at 15:07 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2020

    Monaghan 1-13 Cavan 1-13

Monaghan should really have been home and dry, thinking about a quarter-final with Antrim. Instead having scored two points in the second half, it's extra-time.

Strangely, Cavan have won the toss for extra-time but appear to have opted to play into the wind which, given how much joy they had in the second half, seems an odd call.

  14. Extra-time it ispublished at 14:56 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2020

    Monaghan 1-13 Cavan 1-13

Conor McManus free, would you want anyone else standing over this?

    Well, he's pulled it wide.

There goes the whistle. We are going to extra-time.

Cavan were very nearly dead and buried, brilliant from them, something of an implosion from Monaghan though.

    Are you not entertained?

  15. LEVELpublished at 14:54 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2020

    Monaghan 1-13 Cavan 1-13

Gerard Smith, the toast of county Cavan.

Outside of the boot, it's over. Cavan are level having been six points down 10 minutes ago.

  16. One point gamepublished at 14:53 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2020

    Monaghan 1-13 Cavan 1-12

    ONE. POINT. GAME

Beautifully taken mark by Niall Murray allowing him to kick an easy point and Cavan, with all the momentum, are one point away from levelling this game.

Remember, there's no such thing as replays in 2020.

  17. Five minutes of added timepublished at 14:51 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2020

    Monaghan 1-13 Cavan 1-11

Conor McManus tries to get his side's first point since the 49th minute but it's wide.

Five minutes of additional time. More than enough time for Cavan to muster a few attempts.

Gearoid McKiernan tries a speculate effort that drops well short.

  18. Down to twopublished at 14:49 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2020

    Monaghan 1-13 Cavan 0-11

Hello! Gearoid McKiernan drives inside and strokes over a beauty on his left.

What a turnaround this is and it is absolutely game on.

  19. A matter of inchespublished at 14:47 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2020

    Monaghan 1-13 Cavan 1-10

Martin Reilly swings one over, or does he? One umpire gives the point, the other signals a wide.

After some consultation, the point is given. We are now down to a three-point game.

  20. Late rally?published at 14:43 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2020

    Monaghan 1-13 Cavan 1-9

As we approach the final 10 minutes in Clones, Chris Conroy pushes a free wide and these are the chances that the Breffnimen can ill-afford to pass up at this stage.

They need a spark, and Luke Fortune might just have provided it with another beautiful strike from behind the 45. Gearoid McKiernan follows suit about 30 seconds later. That's some way to beat Monaghan's blanket.

Ten to go, four points in it.
