I'm sure you've seen the rivalry between Brazil and Argentina at events during this Olympic Games, and how much it takes on a football aspect.

In some of the earlier games, Brazil fans have been doing a long count up from one to 23. 

The reason, is because it's 23 years since Argentina last won a senior title - the Copa America in 1993.

Now - since then, Argentina have won Olympic football gold twice. It is almost a backhanded acceptance from the Brazilian crowd that the Olympic title is not as important as a senior title.

However, as a wise man once said, coherence is the last refuge of the unimaginative and no one thinks this is irrelevant now.

There is no lack of effort from Neymar or his team-mates, but they are just lacking that killer finish as time appears to slip away. 

The Maracana is deafening now with the sound of whistles as Germany enjoy a spell of fruitless possession. 

No-one said I needed ear plugs for this game, but the jeers are intensely loud. 

People will be saying 'it's only an Olympic final.'

Try telling a Brazilian that. Try telling Neymar that. It's not just an Olympic final - it's a football final and that means Brazilians live for it.

Neymar is struggling with cramp. So much energy spent.

I'm not sure how the Brazilian public will deal with a penalty shootout here.

Germany keep possession with simple passes and the Maracana boos in unison. They want this. They really want this.

Wave after wave of Brazil attacks now. Neymar opens up on the corner of the area and swerves a right-footed shot wide.

Ten minutes until penalties.

The weird and social Olympics.

I've just met Tom, a gent from Florida at his 10th Olympics.

"Man these people are passionate about their football," he says.  Tom trades pins, takes in events and mingles.

Then I walk about 500 metres and a Brazilian guy stops me asking if I trade pins. I say no and tell him to seek out Tom, showing him an image.

"Ah that's my friend," he shouts. "Is he here? Where?"

They are from different nations and probably separated by about 30 years in age. Still, in some way, the Olympics binds them.

Great chance for Felipe Anderson, who may have been put off by the roar of the Maracana as he steadies himself and stretches for the ball - Timo Horn saves in the German goal.

Neymar's face says it all. It's been one of those games - nip and tuck.

Half-time in extra time and we're still locked at 1-1.

Fifteen more minutes and then it's glorious, glorious penalties.

I can't help but think that if the man who made this shirt number famous were here he'd get a better view.

Tense at the fan park now. Each time Brazil break forward this lot are trying to suck the ball into the net.
