"There's no denying that Newcastle and the Rugby Football League have made a massive effort to promote the Magic Weekend throughout the city and the region.

"Posters on buses, the back of parking tickets, billboards, events guides and magazines have generated interest. The media take-up has also been impressive, with the event plastered over the front of the evening paper in Newcastle and featured extensively on local radio and TV.

"The city has seen a flood of fans decked in a multitude of shirts, from Leeds and Wigan to local amateur outfits Cramlington Rockets and Winlaton Warriors represented.

"With the sun shining, cold drinks flowing and smiling faces, it's living up to its reputation as a festival of rugby league so far."

  2. What is the Magic Weekend?published at 14:03 British Summer Time 30 May 2015

It is a time when Britain's top-flight rugby league sides descend on one venue to play back-to-back Super League fixtures over one action-packed weekend.

The concept was launched in 2007 in Cardiff and originally labelled "Millennium Weekend" on account of it being played at the Millennium Stadium.

Magic Weekend has since been sustained by the Rugby Football League as a showpiece event, aimed at bringing the 13-man game to new territories to spread the rugby league gospel.
