    St Helens 12-0 Wigan

Wigan all over the place after that second try, they couldn't even take advantage of a poor kick and handed possession back to the Saints.

Another raid drives forward to test the Wigan line, but Dom Peyroux spills under pressure.

Wigan get a penalty. Ball to touch. Respite.

St Helens have been very impressive. They are going forward well, they are making good metres, they are moving the ball at the right times and asking questions of this Wigan defence.

Brilliant, brilliant try. Saints use swift hands to whizz the ball along the line out to the right side but Dom Peyroux shatters the rhythm with a blistering, cutting run against the grain back across to the left.

He goes straight through the Wigan cover, and finds Jonny Lomax up in support. The half-back showed real class to slip his way through for a try.

Converted by Mark Percival. Two try advantage!

We've got right into the arm-wrestle now. Both teams completing sets, relying on sharp, smart kicking.

However, St Helens have the advantage and their middle looks teak-tough.

Wigan's last tackle is mopped up. There's a pattern developing.

It's been an electric start. There have been some great hits, some great carries, some good football played and both sides are getting into each other.

It's been a great start to the game.

    It's 100 mph stuff.

Saints again looking to their power forwards to gain the yards, they've got pace and skill from Mark Percival too. Most effective.

However, a last-tackle kick is pouched neatly by Wigan debutant Zak Hardaker, who passes the first real test of his rustiness.

Big season for him, on and off the field.

    St Helens 6-0 Wigan

Joe Greeenwood carts the ball in, to a chorus of boos from the St Helens fans. Tackled brilliantly by Theo Fages who looks good defensively.

Wigan go for broke on the last, releasing Romain Navarrete from close range but the French prop is held out.

    Turnover. Phew.

Interesting to see what impact the shot-clocks are having. Wigan just about got their scrum set and completed within the time limit...

It's been frenetic so far. Wigan wang the ball downfield... it's swirling... Regan Grace has dropped it!

Wigan get a life. Their fans rouse for it.

    St Helens 6-0 Wigan

Sam Powell coughs up a penalty for interference at the ruck. Saints can turn the screw again.

Saints prior to that had unloaded the big guns, Alex Walmsley, Luke Thompson... it's a rampaging pack.

Wigan holding out again... just. Then Thompson spills it in contact. Knock-on. Let-off.

Loved the way Jonny Lomax engaged the line there for that Kevin Naiqama try. Took it right to the teeth of the Wigan defence before releasing the Fijian. Great to have a half with a running game like that.

St Helens ripping forward again off the restart, Wigan have not settled yet although they've come up with the ball on the back of a Lachlan Coote end-of-set bomb.

Goodness me Saints took full advantage of their first real dig on the Wigan line and it's from Fiji skipper Kevin Naiqama.

Slick hands move the ball right, then left after Mark Percival is stopped. Naiqama shows brilliant skill, fine footwork and bit of pace, keeping the ball-carrying arm off the floor before grounding.

    Sensational start.

What an opportunity to strike now for the hosts...

Really interested to see how Lachlan Coote goes up against Zak Hardaker tonight. Two full-backs on show tonight.

Teams out of the tunnel, you can see the breath in the air. Proper chill.

However, I think the players will warm up pretty sharpish.

Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook racks up 350 appearances tonight, 247 of which have been in the Red Vee of Saints.

Jonny Lomax and Tommy Makinson reach 200 tonight with their appearances, and the latter can hit 100 tries with a hat-trick. What a way to do it that would be, eh?
