TRY St Helens 26-2 Halifaxpublished at 69 mins

    Theo Fages, con Danny Richardson

Just moments after Halifax went looking for their first try, St Helens have their easiest try of the game to surely put this result beyond doubt.

Theo Fages strolls over, but it is the kick from James Roby - yet another masterfully executed piece of skill by the captain - that bamboozles the Fax defence.

    Jonny Lomax, con Danny Richardson

Saints are over for their third!

No television replays are needed this time as Jonny Lomax slides over, but that is a try once again finely crafted by James Roby.

He shifts out of dummy half, finds Danny Richardson who bobs and weaves to stay out of the clutches of the Halifax defence before dishing the ball off to Lomax on his right.

Despite fumbling the pass, Lomax controls it to dash over.

Halifax sticking to their 'try anything' approach, this time with Steve Tyrer kicking out of dummy half to catch St Helens on the hop.

They make the metres, as it is a peach of a kick, but they fail to cause any damage.

That St Helens try hasn't knocked the spirit of the Halifax fans who seem to be thoroughly enjoying their day out. Before the Saints scored they were even singing 'Que Sera Sera'.

It's perhaps unlikely they'll reach Wembley now but Fax could justify celebrating the fact that they look to have avoided the heaviest defeat in a Challenge Cup semi-final, which was what most people were expecting to happen in this game.

That unwanted record looks set to stay with Bradford who lost 71-10 to Wigan in 1992.

The screws are being turned by St Helens now.

Mark Percival squeezes a kick though, which Danny Richardson chases. The ball is bundled dead and Fax will have to restart with a drop-out...

    St Helens 14-2 Halifax

There is a strut about St Helens now, as they attack with the confidence expected of them today.

A delicious kick from James Roby is almost a 40/20, but the bounce of the ball just holds it up long enough for Steve Tyrer to get to it first to defuse the danger.

Jason Hardy: He's lost it!! No try all day long. Very, very easy decision that.

Katie: He dropped it! Come on Halifax! Time for a try!

Some of you clearly aren't convinced Dom Peyroux got that down cleanly!

For a moment, St Helens looked as if they were off for a third try.

Kevin Naiqama get a hand in to strip Stephen Tyrer of the ball, but he knocks on in the process.

Saints haven't had that element of dynamism around them today, but this lead seems to have sparked them to life.

  12. try

TRY St Helens 14-2 Halifaxpublished at 48 mins

    Dom Peyroux, con Danny Richardson

The lead is stretched to 12 points thanks to that fine finish by Dom Peyroux.

The second-rower powers over after taking a short ball and contorts his body enough to get the ball down.

It is a try made of power and poise.

Danny Richardson again adds the extras.

    St Helens 8-2 Halifax

St Helens get through their first set and it is workmanlike... they are not rushing to dazzle their Championship opponents.

Halifax, however, try it on and kick early when they get the ball back. It's a poor effort... but worth trying it as they chase the game.

Halifax get through the first set of the second half with supreme confidence.

James Saltonstall charges up the middle, the Championship side are working St Helens. The ball is kicked on the last and St Helens have to start deep in their own territory.

The first half, I'd say, was no fluke...

And this is the moment that separates these two sides.

For 40 minutes Halifax out-enthused Super League leaders St Helens, but what the Championship side don't have is a man of James Roby's prestige. The captain took it upon himself to grab the game's first try.
