Australia are a measuring stick. The men and the women have shown that. That's how the rest of the game needs to get up to speed. But what we had in the men's tournament was a massive breakthrough from one of the other nations in Samoa. This gives us the opportunity to really broaden this international game.

Australia winger Josh Addo-Carr on BBC One: "We came to England with one goal: to win the World Cup. We did it for everyone in Australia, for all our families. What a way to finish.

"It is hard to score a try in a World Cup final. We were against a world class team in Samoa, I just did the tough stuff tonight and let the boys score the points. It is a wonderful victory. Samoa did their people prous tonight. That is what Rugby League does, it brings people together."

On chasing the record for tries at a World Cup: "The record wasn't on my mind. My goal was to win the World Cup. It wasn't meant to be."

Junior Paulo, Samoa captain, speaking to BBC One: "It's been an emotional one. Walking off this field, I can definitely say we're proud, despite the scoreline. I can't imagine doing this journey with any other group of boys. Part of the decision to represent our heritage was for our families, our country and our people. We can walk away with our heads held high.

"Credit to Australia for getting the lollies today. They deserved it, but I'm so proud of our guys. I'm happy that Australia won it. I'm happy both teams turned up today.

"I think now we just get away from footy for a bit, and deal with things when we get back. After such a diverse World Cup, we can look forward to more international games."

On getting pre-match support from Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson: "It was pretty cool. The impact we've had on the game, you can see how we've done that on a global scale. Rugby league is a language we all understand."

Samoa head coach Matt Parish, speaking on BBC One: “We’re disappointed with the result but I couldn’t be prouder of the effort and commitment to the cause. We played a champion team and just ran out of juice. We just couldn’t quite get close enough to put pressure on but I’m really proud of this group. They kept trying until the end.

“It’s been a fantastic journey. I’d like to thank all the Samoan teams around the world for supporting this team. The support we’ve had all around the world has been unbelievable.

“I think everyone neds a good break now before we look ahead. The tournament’s been great. We need more games for the Pacific nations to thrive. Let’s hope that happens.”

Australia head coach Mal Meninga: "It's fantastic. It's one of those games and you sit up there. The first half was expectational, we did what we needed to do. In the second half we scrambled well, a man down but we still scored points. It's what you do, you work for each other.

"[James Tedesco] is a worthy man of the match. He was expectational, he was on tonight. We needed him.

"They're committed to each other. There is respect and humility for our jersey, for the opposition. We brought our best game tonight. We've had a long year but have been rewarded for effort tonight. What a way to finish our 2022 season.

"I wasn't nervous, I'm confident in this footy team. Defensively, we only had 12 against a Samoa side who threw everything, I was still comfortable."

Australia captain James Tedesco speaking to BBC Sport: "It is pretty unbelievable. This group of blokes came over here six or seven weeks ago and we've got such a special bond. Covid has killed us for three years, not being able to play for our country, but we came here early and got along straight away.

"We created that connection from the start and wanted to work hard for each other. "
