Obviously Salford got that try in the second that really made things interesting.

But as we so often see with St Helens they have this knack of keeping teams at arm's length.

Credit to Paul Rowley and Salford who've had a stunning season and pushed St Helens right to the limit.

But reigning Super League champions Saints were just too much for the visitors.

And now they will take on Leeds at Old Trafford next Saturday for the chance to win their fourth Super League Grand Final in a row.

Salford battled and came close, but St Helens saw out the win in the end.

Kristian Woolf's final home game in charge of St Helens ends in victory.

He's masterminded a path to his third Super League Grand Final in charge of the club and fourth in a row for Saints.

We're back under way but there's a slightly subdued feel after Ken Sio leaves the field.

    Just a minute remaining.

Still a halt in play as Ken Sio receives medical attention.

The stretcher has come on. His afternoon is over. A round of applause goes up around the ground as he sits up.

Blimey, Ken Sio is out cold on the field, here.

There's an immediate reaction to signal the medical staff from Matty Lees who goes in on him. It's not intentional by the looks of it. Looks like it's a knee into his head as they both went in on the ball.

We could have a pretty lengthy break as Sio is attended to.

By the time Salford get the ball back now there's probably only going to be three minutes left.

I'm a big fan of Super League's officiating staff and I think there's far too much criticism of them throughout the season.

However, Chris Kendall has sent lesser things to the video referee this afternoon but hasn't chosen to do so with that Tim Lafai/Tommy Makinson incident.

    That's a massive, massive call.

Salford are throwing everything at St Helens now and the reigning champions are just holding on.

    Frantic!

    St Helens 19-12 Salford

    Ooh, controversial.

Tommy Makinson's gone into the bin for holding back Tim Lafai as Salford had looked to have gone over.

Has he stopped Lafai from scoring a massive try? For some reason, referee Chris Kendall HASN'T sent that upstairs! Surely Salford should have been awarded a penalty try?!

Salford put a wicked bouncing ball into the corner and Jonathan Bennison is forced to put the ball in to touch.

    A nervy end, here.

Konrad Hurrell puts the ball in to touch as St Helens break and that's another error from the hosts.

Seven minutes left, can Salford capitalise?

    Stunning.

It's gone to the video ref but there's nothing wrong with that!

Jonathan Bennison touches down successfully and is that the winning try? He does well to run a good 15 metres or so in the space of a second or two to work on to Jonny Lomax's kick in, too.

Tommy Makinson nails the kick that follows and St Helens are two scores ahead and into the final 10 minutes.

Curtis Sironen turns and comes within inches of the lines but it's short.

Jonathon Bennison meanwhile latches on to a kick in to goal and touches down. It's going upstairs. Have St Helens done it?!

This is a crucial period for both sides, now.

Kallum Watkins spills the ball deep in the Salford half of the field and St Helens have a set of six to surely give themselves a winning lead.

    Salford are so unlucky there.

That would've been amazing, going 18-13 up with 15 minutes left.

An unbelievable finish in store now

  18. NO TRYpublished at 66 mins

    St Helens 13-12 Salford

Salford think they're through as they touch down but King Vuniyayawa holds on to the ball too long and they concede a penalty.

The Red Devils are furious. That's a let off for St Helens though, who are well off the pace at the moment.

St Helens are hanging on, now.

Tommy Makinson puts in a crucial tackle to force them in to touch but soon after Salford win another set of six right in front of the posts.

Joe Batchelor goes in high on Elijah Taylor and Salford win a penalty within their own half.

They move it upfield as they look to capitalise on this momentum they've suddenly found and their traveling support are in fine voice.
