"England have a great opportunity in Dunedin, it's a great stadium, it will be enclosed and the conditions will be perfect. The All Blacks know it will be a serious match next week."

"The All Blacks are in a habit of winning, and they are at home but England have a great chance and I would not be surprised if some of the players who played tonight are rewarded."

England coach Stuart Lancaster on BBC Radio 5 live: "To lose at the end is tough because it was an outstanding effort. One or two things did not go our way, a little bit of game management but there were lots of positives. I always truly believed we could win, but we have some selection decisions to make because the lads that played today were outstanding."

"Today is a huge plus for England rugby. Next Saturday Billy Vunipola, Tom Wood, Courtney Lawes and Dylan Hartley will be available in the pack, and Owen Farrell and Luther Burrell behind the scrum.

"England will be stronger and have already given the All Blacks a massive fright. These next two matches will be colossal. By the end of the three matches England will know exactly where they are in terms of world rankings and the build-up to the World Cup will be well under way."

All Blacks second row Sam Whitelock sounds an ominous note: "They really tested us, but we will work on our set pieces and sort it out for next week."

Dan in Leamington: "Considering that was nowhere near a full strength England team I would be worried if I were a New Zealander! All Blacks playing at Eden Park and scraping a win doesn't sound too good! And had they lost because of some poor officiating there would be just as much if not more furore."

Mark, Berks: "Typical England, handed a chance to beat the All Blacks and they throw it away, basic errors again."

Joey Jarmyn:, external Eastmond needs to be mentioned. I thought he was outstanding!

Billy Bunter:, external Great game England. Unlucky, beaten by handling errors & playing last 10 with 14. Need to keep up next week with 1st choice 15.

Richard Cugley:, external Talk of the cavalry coming short-changes today's England team. Just swap Haskell for Wood, and Nigel Owens for somebody fair.

England fly-half Freddie Burns on BBC Radio 5 live: "We're gutted, we had opportunities but credit to the All Blacks, give them a sniff and they will take it. We will try to take the positives into the second Test and learn from it. Everyone stood up and was counted, we wanted to prove a point and we did that, and we have players coming back and can do well next week."

Richard Wigglesworth, England back-up scrum-half: "We have proved we can put them under pressure more than they normally feel, and if we can get at them early next week we can do well again. Our defence was outstanding, and the All Blacks are not used to facing that kind of pressure."

Alistair Lowe: , externalTremendous match ,tight throughout. Can someone explain why NZ didn't have a player binned for holding player on the try line?

Andrew Lavoipierre:, external ‏Great effort England. Could have been different if Owens had been consistent.

Evan Jones:, external ‏As I said at the start, typical English whinging poms whining about the ref. You lost as you weren't good enough. Deal with it.

"I don't want to get carried away, but having played in this environment in our little country and what rugby means to us, it's not over until the final whistle and sides over generations have proved that, even into injury time, they can seal the deal. But I am pleased there was a try scored, otherwise it would have been a Nigel Owens ball game with five penalties for New Zealand and four for England."

"By and large this is the New Zealand 23-man squad from November, but England have had to put a new squad together. Either the players are superstars or Stuart Lancaster can walk on water. They will make a lot of changes and say they are stronger, but next week this All Black team will be 25% better than they were today."

Michael Lee:, external With that team, at that ground, against the all blacks, that's a top effort.

John Murray:, external England great, but All Blacks winning quality shines through. Nigel Owens with questions to answer. Absorbing rugby!

Kevin J Wright:, external That's why they are so great, they play to the final whistle 100%. Well played England; well played NZ.

"England will look to build on it, but they will be bitterly disappointed, it was one lapse in concentration that has cost them the match.

"They have got to believe and if anything it can give them more confidence that this New Zealand team is human and they can get after them."

Well, how was that for a Saturday morning?

Written off by most before the match England, despite missing half their team, pushed the world champion All Blacks right to the wire.

But New Zealand won. That was their first Test of the season, they will get better and there's still two more Tests to come.

Both sides will be thinking bring it on. Tremendous.

One last chance for the visitors...

They throw to the back at a line-out 40m out and launch Manu Tuilagi into midfield. England recycle, hammer away again and... are pinged for holding on.

New Zealand win, but what a performance by England's under-strength warriors

There's a reason why they are the champions of the world...

From the scrum number eight Jerome Kaino is held just short but they switch to the blind-side and quick hands from Ben Smith skip the ball onto namesake Conrad to dive over in the corner.

    Brilliant, clinical and probably decisive.
