So, who impressed for Scotland in a largely scruffy match? Captain Greig Laidlaw was his usual steady self, kicking with deadly accuracy and controlling the game from scrum-half. John Barclay was another stand-out, with some great defensive work, while Ryan Wilson had a big game at number eight.

The teams meet again next Saturday in Tokyo.

Scotland have a small squad on this trip so there won't be too many changes. Al Dickinson was injured early on and must be a doubt, while WP Nel had a significant limp when he was replaced. Missing those two experienced brawlers would be a blow.

    On BBC Scotland

"It was a good win for us. We probably need to tighten up and be a bit more accurate, we let Japan off the hook a couple of times.

"Japan are improving all the time. It's the first game we have had for a long time and we will look to improve for next week as well."

    Andy Nicol
Former Scotland international on BBC Two Scotland

"The only issue I have is a huge reliance on Grieg Laidlaw and his kicking. All the points scoring is coming through him. I'd like to see Vern Cotter have a bit more confidence in the squad and give Henry Pyrgos more game time because there's not much between them as scrum-halves."

    Andy Nicol
Former Scotland international on BBC Two Scotland

"It was all about the win. It was an adequate performance but not maybe not as sharp and slick as we'd like. You have to remember a lot of these guys haven't played for five or six weeks and any win away from home against a team near us in the world rankings is good."

Greig Laidlaw spots that there is no one home for Japan and lumps a huge kick out of defence for Tommy Seymour to chase after. The Scotland winger wins the race comfortably but his touch with the boot is just too heavy and the ball bobbles through a very small try-zone and out of his reach.

Fraser Brown is on for Scotland hooker Stuart McInally as the Japanese are back up to a full complement of 15.

Full-back Stuart Hogg slaloms his way forward and looks certain to score, cutting in from the left wing, only to get a bump which loosens the ball from his grasp.
