It's a good lesson in being patient. They put themselves into the right positions, they were five metres out and battling to get over that line.

They had a bit of luck - the ball squirted out and everyone reacted and George Ford reacted a little bit quicker.

It's a funny game, Bath are on top again.

Now then, how can the hosts respond? A lot of their good first-half work has been undone there. Bath look sharp all of a sudden and are on the front foot.

Bath start the second period brightly. They're pressing, 10m from the line.

Bath, in their grey strip with white shorts, get the second 40 minutes going at Kingston Park.

The players return for second half. No changes for either side at the break.

Elsewhere today, the recent spike in Premiership sackings shows a "worrying trend", says the Rugby Coaches Association.

Exeter Chiefs boss Rob Baxter also says a "sacking culture" comparable to football is creeping into rugby union.

Leicester director of rugby Richard Cockerill became the third boss sacked in eight months on Monday, while five left in five years before 2016.

That last five minutes Bath came back into it and they looked like they had their tails up at the end with a good few phases of attack.

They'll want to continue that as they go into the second half.

So, third-time lucky for George Ford and Bath run off with a four-point deficit.

Falcons will be happy with those first 40 minutes, but there's very little in the scoreline.

Definitely all to play for in the second half.

George Ford couldn't miss this one. It is as straightforward as penalties come.

Finally, Bath are on the board, as they go off for the break.

Bath are close, just one metre out. They win a penalty and the advantage is being played.

It comes back to George Ford, who decides to chip it out wide... But it is easily gathered by Newcastle.

So they will go back for the penalty, right under the posts.

Bath win another penalty and this time George Ford opts to kick for the corner...

Again?! George Ford misses left, this time, after his earlier miss from a very similar position.

The England man was 33m out this time, fairly straight in front of the posts.

Bath won't be best pleased with that - they could easily be only one point behind.

Now, finally, here come Bath. Ford, to Mercer... they're pressing in the Falcons 22 at last.

But Newcastle, once again, defend well initially.

However, a high tackle gives Bath a penalty.
