By the way, replays have just shown second row Courtney Lawes getting across to make a superb tap-tackle on speeding wing Toni Pulu.

Stephen Donald has kicked the penalty into the corner for the Chiefs.

Interesting to hear referee Jerome Garces - after being prompted by one of his assistants - warning the Chiefs in the early stages for blocking the Lions runners as they chase a kick.

This was something Lions boss Warren Gatland was very keen to bring up earlier this week ahead of the first Test.

  3. Yellow card - Joe Marlerpublished at 12 mins

    Chiefs 0-3 Lions

Joe Marler is under the microscope.

The Lions prop has flattened opposite number Nepo Laulala with a shoulder that was enormous as it was late.

The video review only makes it look worse.

An obvious yellow, another penalty and the Lions down to 14 for the next 10.

Marler might as well have written off his Test chances.

    Chiefs 0-3 Lions

The Lions defensive line speed is sharp - up in the Chiefs faces and forcing them into snap decisions.

But there is wing Toni Pulu sniffing a half-gap.

The Lions scamper and cover and are back in shape.

Nice work from Dan Cole and then Jack Nowell scrambles through a hole after not being held in the tackle.

The Lions are up to within 10.

  7. O'Mahony to captain Lions on Saturday?published at 08:43 British Summer Time 20 June 2017

After leading the Lions to that resounding win over the Maori - and being part of a well-balanced back row - Peter O'Mahony is certainly in pole position to captain the Lions on Saturday in the first Test.

The Lions coaches have a final selection meeting on Wednesday to decide whether to stick with the same combination, or twist by bringing in tour captain Sam Warburton, despite his lack of competitive rugby of late.

If O'Mahony does keep his place in the Saturday side it would cap a remarkable story. The Munsterman wasn't even meant to start against England in the Six Nations, but was drafted in at the last minute following Jamie Heaslip's late withdrawal. His outstanding performance led to a Lions call-up, now even the Test captaincy.

    Chiefs 0-0 Lions

Aimless kicks get punished on this tour.

Chiefs wing Solomon Alaimalo makes gains as Joe Marler fails to make the tackle on the chase.

But Shaun Stevenson cannot capitalise for the hosts, punting out on the full as he looks for touch.

  9. Postpublished at 4 mins

    Chiefs 0-0 Lions

Justin Tipuric limpets onto the man in possession, keeping him off the floor and earning a turnover on halfway.

    Lions put-in.

    Chiefs 0-0 Lions

Courtney Lawes shows up well in the early minutes and pressure situations as he slaps down a Chiefs line-out five metres from his own line.

Superb steal and Greig Laidlaw spins to Dan Biggar to clear...

    Chiefs 0-0 Lions

Elliot Daly chalks up the first plus point in Warren Gatland's notebook, chasing up Dan Biggar's kick-off and enveloping Finlay Christie with a superb tackle.

The Chiefs manage to recycle though.

And the Lions have given away the first penalty inside two minutes as Robbie Henshaw takes out a man in the air.

They are trying to keep under double figures for the match. That is not a good start.

It will be a little noiser in the Lions dressing room right now.

The last back-slap and front-row nuzzles are being dished out as the referee knocks on the door.

Last seen being laid out by Waisake Naholo's forearm as the Highlanders' wing crashed over a week ago, Courtney Lawes has passed the protocols and is back in Lions action.

He had been having a stormer of a Lions tour before that concussion derailed him.

Could he still force his way into the ultra-competitive second-row engine room? George Kruis, Maro Itoje, and tonight's partner Alun Wyn Jones will have something to say about that.

Tim Nanai-Williams' dancing feet and darting pace will keep opposite number Jared Payne busy today.

The 28-year-old Samoa international is back in New Zealand rugby after a stint in Japan and is a box of tricks.

He was part of the Samoa team smashed 78-0 by the All Blacks last week, but will be keen to make amends here.

The more open the game gets, the more dangerous he becomes.

Not very, if the efforts of these Lions fans are anything to go by.

They have been getting to know the locals a little better outside FMG Stadium Waikato.

It's a beautiful, mild evening here in Hamilton, and the ground looks a picture.

Just had a chat to one of Warren Gatland's long-term friends - and former team-mate - Steve Gordon, who was in reminiscing mood as we stood in the media centre, which is on the site of the old gym where him and Gatland operated back in the day.
