It's another absolutely brilliant try; from one end of the field to the other. We wondered about the physicality of Montpellier. If they are tiring a bit, the spaces become bigger and the Edinburgh players are able to find them

Try! Montpellier 21-15 Edinburghpublished at 57 mins

    Dougie Fife

Finally Edinburgh make their pressure pay and it's another cracking try.

It starts from the Edinburgh half when substitute fly-half Jaco Van Der Walt sends lock Ben Toolis striding through a gap.

When the ball is recycled Hamish Watson and Blair Kinghorn both show quick hands to find Bill Mata. The big Fijian takes contact when it looks like he should have shipped it on one more time, but then conjures a a typically brilliant offload to put Dougie Fife over in the corner.

Strap in folks, it's game on!

  3. Powerhouse Picamolespublished at 55 mins

    Montpellier 21-10 Edinburgh

Again Edinburgh build a good attacking platform in the Montpellier 22m but when Ross Ford takes the ball into contact the man-mountain Louis Picamoles gets his powerful frame over the ball and there is nobody in the Edinburgh ranks capable of shifting him.

Ford is forced to hang on, Wayne Barnes penalises him and again Montpellier come through another mini-storm unscathed.

  4. Chance gonepublished at 51 mins

    Montpellier 21-10 Edinburgh

    What a mess!

The scrum is wheeled and Bill Mata loses control of the ball at his feet and kicks the ball over the goal-line.

Hamish Watson looks like he may have touched the loose ball down for the try but, after looking at several replays, referee Wayne Barnes rules Watson was offside and awards Montpellier a penalty.

Edinburgh may rue not making all this pressure count.

  5. Mata of inchespublished at 50 mins

    Montpellier 21-10 Edinburgh

Bill Mata breaks off the base of the scrum and goes for the line but is hauled down inches short.

There was a penalty advantage and Edinburgh elect to take another scrum 5m out.

  6. 'Cynical' from Du Plessispublished at 16:25 British Summer Time 13 October 2018

It was certainly cynical. Good to see Magnus Bradbury prominent with a couple of carries

  7. Sin-bin: Montpellier (Bismarck Du Plessis)published at 48 mins

    Montpellier 21-10 Edinburgh

The pressure is starting to tell on Montpellier as Edinburgh continue to hammer at the door.

Magnus Bradbury and Bill Mata are among those to drive at the French line and just as they look destined to go over, Bismark Du Plessis kills the ball in the ruck and is inevitably penalised and sent to the sin bin.

Edinburgh will have a man advantage for 10 minutes and you sense they need to make it count now.

  8. Maul malfunctionspublished at 45 mins

    Montpellier 21-10 Edinburgh

Against teams of Montpellier's quality you really need to take the chances that come your way and Edinburgh allow another one to slip away.

The line-out is collected safely but the maul is disrupted and Ross Ford knocks on at the base to gift possession back to the home side.

Frustrating for Richard Cockerill, I'd imagine.

  9. Edinburgh asking questionspublished at 44 mins

    Montpellier 21-10 Edinburgh

Edinburgh have come out firing after the break.

Matt Scott has been superb today and the centre again makes yards carrying into midfield. Darcy Graham then breaks through and is captured 10m from the line.

They look to have numbers on the next phase but Simon Hickey's long pass doesn't find a team-mate.

Play is brought back for an Edinburgh penalty and they kick to the corner....

  10. Ford enters the fraypublished at 41 mins

    Montpellier 21-10 Edinburgh

Stuart McInally is replaced at the break presumably as a result of an injury picked up in the first half.

Fortunately for Edinburgh they have a more than adequate replacement to come on, Scotland's record caps holder Ross Ford.

  11. Kick-offpublished at 16:15 British Summer Time 13 October 2018

    Montpellier 21-10 Edinburgh

Simon Hickey kicks off the second half.

Pienaar can play anywhere. I think his first Springbok cap came at 15. He's run the game at fly-half after playing at scrum-half all season

Edinburgh have been architects of their own downfall to a certain extent, but they are still in it. When they are accurate with fast ball, they are dangerous.

  14. Half-time: Montpellier 21-10 Edinburghpublished at 16:00 British Summer Time 13 October 2018

It's been a half where the pendulum has swung back and forth.

Montpellier started with their tails up and Henry Immelman's try was just reward.

Edinburgh hadn't shown a great deal but then conjured a magnificent team try to put Stuart McInally over for the score.

At that stage Richard Cockerill's men looked to be gaining the upper hand but were then hit by a double-whammy of two tries in five minutes from Benjamin Fall and Gabriel Ngandebe.

Simon Hickey's penalty means it's an 11-point game going into the second half, when you have got to think Edinburgh need to score first to have a chance.

  15. Penalty - Montpellier 21-10 Edinburghpublished at 40 mins

    Simon Hickey

Edinburgh respond well and get some phase play going to force a penalty midway between the 10 and 22m lines.

To stop the bleeding on the scoreboard they elect to kick at goal and with the last kick of the half Simon Hickey reduces the deficit to 11 points.

  16. 'Unbelievable counter-attack'published at 15:58 British Summer Time 13 October 2018

    Montpellier 21-7 Edinburgh

    Chris Paterson
Former Scotland international on BBC Sportsound

    Quote Message

It's clinical from Montpellier; an unbelievable counter-attack. There were five off-loads between the home 22 and the Edinburgh 22 at a brilliant tempo. Then we have a mis-read from Henry Pyrgos.

  17. try

Try! Montpellier 21-7 Edinburghpublished at 15:54 British Summer Time 13 October 2018

    Gabriel Ngandebe

Without wishing to make sweeping generalisations, this is peak French rugby. Having looked like they might be allowing Edinburgh to disrupt them, they pull two quality tries out the bag.

Edinburgh are turned over and soon Willem Liebenberg is galloping free towards Edinburgh territory. The ball is recycled and Ruan Pienaar puts a cross-field kick to the space out wide. Rather than tracking the flight of the ball, Henry Pyrgos looks like he's spotted an old friend in the crowd and wanders way off course to leave Gabriel Ngandebe to gather and run in under the posts.

  18. 'Kinghorn will be disappointed'published at 15:54 British Summer Time 13 October 2018

    Montpellier 14-7 Edinburgh

    Colin Gregor
Former Scotland sevens captain on BBC Sportsound

    Quote Message

Kinghorn will be disappointed with that tackle. That's one he really has to make. Against this quality of player, if you miss like that, you get punished. It's tame and then Fall powers away from Hickey

  19. try

Try! Montpellier 14-7 Edinburghpublished at 31 mins

    Benjamin Fall

Just when Montpellier look to be losing a little of their grip on the match they strike with a second try.

Edinburgh squander a promising position in attacking territory and concede a scrum on halfway.

The ball is sent wide and quickfire offloads from Henry Immeman and Vincent Martin put Edinburgh in trouble. Benjamin Fall is left one-on-one with Blair Kinghorn and he skips away from a fairly weak tackle by the youngster to coast over.

Pienaar adds the extras and Montpellier lead by seven again.

  20. Forwards carrying the fightpublished at 28 mins

    Montpellier 7-7 Edinburgh

Edinburgh are starting to look at home here.

They've managed to get some territory and the big men such as Bill Mata and Grant Gilchrist are getting the momentum going with some powerful carries.

Simon Hickey dinks a little kick over the defence and finds touch deep in Montpellier territory as the visitors look to apply some pressure.
