Rufus McLean is the first player born post-2000 to represent Scotland, and now he's the first to score for his country too.

He's looked a real prospect since breaking into the Glasgow Warriors side, and you sense that will be the first of many tries at Test level.

Try - Rufus McLeanpublished at 14:40 British Summer Time 30 October 2021

    Scotland 7-0 Tonga

What a moment! A try just 7 minutes into his debut for Rufus McLean.

He picks up the loose ball following a massive tackle on Jamie Ritchie. He shows all the pace, trickery, and finishing ability that Glasgow fans are accustomed to, evading the would-be tacklers to score.

The TMO checked for a knock-on, but the ball came off Ritchie's face.

No mistake off the tee from Blair Kinghorn.

  3. Tongan powerpublished at 5 mins

    Scotland 0-0 Tonga

    Oof, Scotland carved open early.

Loni Uhila spots a gap, and the loosehead prop goes through it. He hurls the ball wide to Walter Fifita, who runs over Darcy Graham.

Scotland win a penalty at the breakdown though, and survive.

An early reminder of the visitors' threat.

  4. Dancing feetpublished at 2 mins

    Scotland 0-0 Tonga

Darcy Graham immediately gets Scotland on the front foot with some beautiful feet.

It leads to a lineout on the Tongan 22, which the home side cannot take advantage of - George Turner throws long.

Tonga's fullback Faiva gets us under way, kicking long downfield.

Jamie Ritchie, co-captain with Ali Price today, takes contact, before Scotland clear over halfway.

  6. Teams outpublished at 14:31 British Summer Time 30 October 2021

    Scotland v Tonga (14:30)

The players are out at Murrayfield.

We start with a poignant minute's silence for Sandy Carmichael that is impeccably observed, before the players make a stand against racism.

Then come the national anthems - how good is it to hear Flower of Scotland sung by fans again?

At last! A Scotland Test match with a crowd. It seems like an eternity since we've had a home crowd in this place. We're expecting about 35,000 for the visit of the Tongans. The place will probably be packed over the next three weeks when Australia, South Africa and Japan arrive. This is very much the warm-up act. The occasion has been denied the presence of so many frontliners, their clubs in England and France exercising their right to keep hold of them this week. Still, there's a lot to be intrigued about. Four new caps to start, another four on the bench. If all eight play then it will be the biggest haul of first caps since Scotland brought in a load of rookies against France in 1952. Given the times we live in, two of Scotland new caps will be Sione Tuipulotu of Australia and Pierre Schoeman of South Africa. This is a thrilling day, also, for young Rufus McLean of Glasgow. The hugely talented wing takes his first step on to the big stage. Watch him fly! Scotland should win this at their ease. Tonga have six six new caps in their starting line-up and are a patched-up side. It won't be glamorous, but it will be fun. Everybody has waited a long time for this.

  8. Rugby mourns the loss of the great Carmichaelpublished at 14:20 British Summer Time 30 October 2021

    Scotland v Tonga (14:30)

Murrayfield will today pay its respects to Sandy Carmichael, the great Scotland and Lions prop who died this week aged 77.

"Gallivanting about the game reserve one night, Carmichael recalled hearing something stirring in the bushes," writes Tom English.

"Out walked a pride of lions, the four-legged type. 'Should we be here?' asked the slightly alarmed prop. 'You're okay,' said one of the park rangers. 'They've already eaten.'

"That's the world that Carmichael existed in. Hard games followed by boozy sessions that helped forge bonds with players that lasted his whole life."

  9. Scotland 'must match Tonga physicality'published at 14:16 British Summer Time 30 October 2021

    Scotland v Tonga (14:30)

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend tells Prime Video: "It's a brilliant opportunity.

"We believe Blair Kinghorn can be a very good 10 at international level.

"We have focused more on our set-ups. We know that Tonga are going to be physical. We've got to match that physicality but also impose our game on them."

  10. All change for Tongapublished at 14:14 British Summer Time 30 October 2021

    Scotland v Tonga (14:30)

It's not just Scotland with a new look team today. Tonga's resources are stretched after being hit by absences, and they have named SIX uncapped players in their starting 15.

Glasgow Warriors fans will get a glimpse of their new signing Walter Fifita who starts on the wing.

Another two players could win their first caps from the bench, meaning that across the two squads 16 players could make their Test bow.

That must be some kind of record, surely?

    Tonga team: (15) J Faiva (14) A Manu (13) M Hingano (12) V Vaea (11) W Fifita (10) K Morath (9) S Takulua (captain); (1) L Uhila (2) M Ngauamo (3) D Lolohea (4) H Fifita (5) S Funaki (6) T Halaifonua (7) F Lokotui (8) V Mapapalangi

    Substitutes: (16) S Maile (17) J Felemi (18) T Taufa (19) D Faleaf (20) O Havili (21) M Kafatolu (22) A Halo (23) N Haisila

  11. Four new caps for Scotspublished at 14:09 British Summer Time 30 October 2021

    Scotland v Tonga (14:30)

With this match falling outside the designated Test window, Scotland players who play in England and France are unavailable to Gregor Townsend for today's match.

The starting line-up has a largely experimental feel to it, with four new caps in the starting 15.

Glasgow Warriors pair Rufus McLean and Sione Tuipulotu will be at wing and centre, while Edinburgh's Jamie Hodgson will play in the second row with club-mate Pierre Schoeman at loose-head.

Another four are in line to make their debuts from the bench.

Blair Kinghorn will play at 10 in a new half-back combination with Ali Price, who is co-captain with Jamie Ritchie.

Edinburgh lock Marshall Sykes and back-row Luke Crosbie and Glasgow half-back partners Jamie Dobie and Ross Thompson are the uncapped players on the bench.

With Finn Russell, Adam Hastings and captain Stuart Hogg among those unavailable, Kinghorn makes his international bow at fly-half on his 26th appearance.

  12. Cautionary Tonga tale of 2012published at 14:04 British Summer Time 30 October 2021

    Scotland v Tonga (14:30)

Tonga's stunning 15-21 victory at Pittodrie nine years ago is still fresh enough in the memory to ensure no Scotland fan will completely dismiss the Pacific Islanders' hopes today.

It was a sensational victory for Tonga, sealed by a stunning Fetu'u Vainikolo try, and a defeat that ranks among the darkest days in Scotland's rugby history.

"That was a totally unacceptable performance we've witnessed today," said the then Scotland head coach Andy Robinson.

"I'm very angry - there will be consequences because of this performance. It reflects on me."

Robinson was true to his word. He resigned that very evening.

For the first time since the Six Nations victory over France in March 2020, Scotland fans return to Murrayfield today to watch the national team in action.

Gregor Townsend's men have some mouthwatering fixtures to look forward to in the coming weeks, with Australia, world champions South Africa and Japan all heading for Edinburgh.

First up though it's Tonga, a team who Scotland should, on paper, be far too good for. But we probably said the same back in 2012.......
