    "The tempo we played at in the first 20 minutes paid off", he said.

    "We have a lot of competition at fly-half, but tonight's performance will do [Pierre Popelin's] confidence the world of good.

    "We understand what sport at the highest level is - you've got to keep coming back. Yes we lost in the final last year, but we'll come again.

    "The cream rises to the top. We might get a difficult draw, but if you want to win the competition, you've got to keep churning out wins."

    "The boys went out second half and scored some nice tries, but ultimately we came up short", he said. "We gave up some soft tries - our own errors fed the opposition.

    "Breakdown was an issue for us, our choice of tackles was poor - we went high against a big team and gave them momentum.

    "We'll see what happens tomorrow and see what that means going forward."

    If you saw the score, you might think 'oh, that was close.' It wasn't close at all. If it was twenty points, it still wouldn't have been a fair reflection on La Rochelle's superiority. The two tries at the end are nice moments for Ollie Smith, but they are meaningless in the context of the game.

    La Rochelle's defence in the second-half was just as good as their attack in the first half. It was suffocating. Glasgow fell into traps and La Rochelle hoovered up the scraps, put the pressure on, won penalties and turnovers and were well worth their victory.
