    HT: Edinburgh 10-0 Zebre

This is a game Edinburgh are expected to win comfortably, and they're doing just about enough for now.

They have dominated possession and territory throughout the first half, but will be frustrated that they haven't been able to translate that into more points.

Plenty to work on after the break.

Not a lot to write home about in the last few minutes.

Zebre win a free-kick after Edinburgh engage early at a scrum.

They opt for another scrum as the clock ticks red.

  5. Sin-bin Simone Gesipublished at 31 mins

    Edinburgh 10-0 Zebre

Edinburgh will have a numerical advantage for the remainder of this first half, as Zebre winger Simone Gesi is sent to the sin bin for a deliberate knock-on.

It wasn't particularly subtle - Gesi just slapped the ball to the floor when Edinburgh looked set to break away down the right wing.

Remember those "near perfect conditions" I mentioned? Not any more! The sun is gone, the wind is up and it's now chucking it down.

It's not been especially pretty so far but Edinburgh are doing what they need to do, and another try soon should break the Zebre resolve.

  7. try

Try Edinburgh 10-0 Zebrepublished at 22 mins

    Jack Blain

Edinburgh slice their way through Zebre and score their second try of the afternoon!

The hosts gets quick ball, and some slick hands release Nick Haining - the big number eight draws in the last defender and passes to Jack Blain outside him, who has a clear run to the line.

Once again, Blair Kinghorn's conversion attempt is off target.

  8. Postpublished at 20 mins

    Edinburgh 5-0 Zebre

A slick passing move sends Mark Bennett, who runs a superb line, through a hole, and his pass eventually finds Luke Crosbie out on the left.

Edinburgh make their way into the Zebre 22, but are bundled into touch and the chance slips away.

  9. try

Try Edinburgh 5-0 Zebrepublished at 18 mins

    Charlie Shiel

And it's a chance that they take!

Connor Boyle pops up with the ball in the middle of an Edinburgh maul, and frees his hands to find Charlie Shiel.

It catches the Zebre defence completely off guard, and Edinburgh's scrum half strolls over to score in the corner.

Blair Kinghorn's conversion attempt slides wide.

  10. Postpublished at 17 mins

    Edinburgh 0-0 Zebre

Edinburgh win a penalty of their own at the breakdown, which Blair Kinghorn kicks right into the corner.

    Big chance...

  11. Postpublished at 15 mins

    Edinburgh 0-0 Zebre

Edinburgh make their way into the Zebre 22, and make decent ground, but once again, Zebre get over the ball and win a penalty at the breakdown.

Angus Williams the man who found himself isolated on this occasion.

  12. Postpublished at 12 mins

    Edinburgh 0-0 Zebre

Cammy Hutchison gets a wee bit isolated in midfield, and Zebre swarm over the ball at the ruck to win a penalty.

Still no chances of any note in this game - things can only get better.

  13. Postpublished at 8 mins

    Edinburgh 0-0 Zebre

Edinburgh win a penalty after Zebre collapse a rolling maul.

Blair Kinghorn kicks the hosts over half-way as they look to build some attacking momentum.

  14. Postpublished at 5 mins

    Edinburgh 0-0 Zebre

It's been a fairly quiet opening, but both teams are throwing the ball around and looking to play, which bodes well.

Former England international Matt Kvesic has made some strong carries for Zebre.

  16. Fragile Edinburgh desperate for pointspublished at 14:57 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2023

Other than a slight gust of wind it’s near perfect conditions for rugby here in Edinburgh. For now at least.

No excuses for the home side not to get their attacking game clicking today. It’s been sadly lacking in recent weeks, most notably in the back-to-back derby defeats to Glasgow.

If Edinburgh are to do something in the URC they need to go on a bit of a run, starting with maximum points today.

  17. Blair shuffles the packpublished at 14:54 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2023

    Edinburgh v Zebre (15:00)

Edinburgh head coach Mike Blair makes nine changes to the side that fell to a hugely disappointing 25-32 defeat in the 1872 Cup last week.

Dave Cherry and Angus Williams come into the front row, Jamie Hodgson replaces Grant Gilchrist, whilst Connor Boyle and Nick Haining join today's captain Luke Crosbie in the back row.

Meanwhile, in the back line, the two Charlies - Shiel and Savala - form a new-look halfback combination; Blair Kinghorn shifts out wide, and young winger Jack Blain starts on the opposite wing.
