So that's it, we now know the 33-men who will carry the hopes of the nation at the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France.

There is just 20 days to go before Wales kick-off their campaign against Fiji in Bordeaux.

  2. Gatland wary of 'dangerous' Fijipublished at 13:14 British Summer Time 21 August 2023

"We won't look too far ahead, I think every team is focusing on getting out of their pool and then take it one step at a time," said Gatland.

"Fiji is a big game, I saw their result against France.

"France put out a lot of younger players.

"We're pretty clear on how we want to play against Fiji. We know how dangerous they are and they've had five warm-up games before the World Cup so they're going to be match fit."

  4. 'Gutting' for the players that have missed outpublished at 13:06 British Summer Time 21 August 2023

Jac Morgan on the players who have missed out:

"It's gutting for them, they've put a lot of work in over the last few months in the camps. Everyone deserves to be picked, anyone could go.

"You don't know what could happen someone could get injured and they'll get a call up. I'll be speaking to them before long."

  5. Tshiunza a 'hybrid' to cover second rowpublished at 13:04 British Summer Time 21 August 2023

Warren Gatland in the press conference: "Christ Tshiunza is a good lineout option, he's very athletic. Still learning his role in terms of six, but eventually we see him there as a six who can cover second row.'

  6. Costelow back-up scrum-halfpublished at 12:58 British Summer Time 21 August 2023

Sam CostelowImage source, Huw Evans Picture Agency

So it turns out Scarlets fly-half Sam Costelow is going to be the cover at scrum-half behind Tomos Williams and Gareth Davies.

That's a new one. I'm not sure he has played there has he?

This has shades of 2003 when Shane Williams went as third choice number nine!

Warren Gatland explains: "We spoke from the start that the tipping point could have been two nines or two tens. There was no certainty for anyone being selected in the squad.

"Sam Costelow is the back up scrum-half, we've taken that risk, other teams have done the same. There's a pinching point in the squad in terms of numbers. If we get a HIA in one of the games we'll have to look at that and address it."

  7. 'Be ready for any opportunity' - Gatlandpublished at 12:55 British Summer Time 21 August 2023

Warren Gatland has given a glimmer of hope to those players who missed out.

He has told the press conference: "The effort all the players have put in knowing there were going to be some disappointed players has been fantastic. The players [left out] have to keep working hard and be ready for any opportunity."

  8. Plumtree 'unlucky'published at 12:53 British Summer Time 21 August 2023

You have to feel for Taine Plumtree.

He was all set to start pre-season with Scarlets this summer when he got a call out of the blue from Warren Gatland to join Wales on their training camp.

His ability to play in the second-row and back-row would have made him a huge asset but injury at Twickenham has cost him.

Christ Tshiunza was the most likely player to have benefitted from that.

Warren Gatland in the press conference: "Taine [Plumtree] is really unlucky having picked up that shoulder injury.

"Looking at the next couple of weeks and the players that can take part in training, we wanted to have some live sessions, he's unfortunately been the one who's drawn the short straw.

"I spoke to him this morning and said 'be ready' as there'll potentially be an opportunity. It was going to be a tight call. We've got three genuine sevens but players that can play in multiple positions."

  9. Morgan never imagined he'd be skipperpublished at 12:50 British Summer Time 21 August 2023

Jac Morgan has just told the press conference: "I would never have thought I'd have been here as captain four years ago.

"I've known Dewi [Lake] for a good few years and we play together at the Ospreys so it's great to be here with him."

Dewi Lake: "You look back four years ago, we'd have been happy going to the World Cup with Wales, let alone as co-captains. It's happened quickly and sometimes life moves that way especially rugby."

  10. Gatland only picks two scrum-halvespublished at 12:48 British Summer Time 21 August 2023

Wales will only have two scrum-halves in France in a break from the normal convention.

It could be a gamble but they wanted extra cover out wide.

Warren Gatland has told a press conference: "Both of the scrum-halves have been really robust in the training we've had.

"We did talk about making a concession, we were thinking of having two nines all along but we thought we needed the depth in the back three.

"There are players that are getting on a bit and whether they can play all the games and just wanted a bit more cover there."

  11. Wales pick World Cup co-captains for first timepublished at 12:46 British Summer Time 21 August 2023

Warren Gatland has just told a press conference: "The two captains are going to be huge players for the future for us and they'll compliment each other really well.

"They're good mates and if one is captain then the other will be supporting him.

"It's something I've never done before but we're confident, but it's a good opportunity with two young players with a big future ahead of them."

  12. Selection took hours - Gatlandpublished at 12:44 British Summer Time 21 August 2023

Warren Gatland has started explaining his World Cup selection.

He said: "It took a couple of hours, some good discussions about the squad, we spoke about the three games and had a debrief.

"We're told the injured players will be ready, Faletau is back running doing a bit of contact. Ryan Elias is about to take part in some training this week."

  13. Amazing to share captaincy - Lakepublished at 12:43 British Summer Time 21 August 2023

Dewi Lake has told Newyddion on S4C:

"It's amazing to be sharing co-captaincy with Jac [Morgan]. We've grown up playing together so to share something like this is huge."

  14. Competition is good - Morganpublished at 12:41 British Summer Time 21 August 2023

Jac Morgan talking to Newyddion on S4C:

[On the loss to South Africa]: "It was tough against South Africa, we gave them a few tries with our mistakes, but there's a lot that we can take from that match where we can take the positives going forward to the World Cup.

"There's a lot of lessons learned so it's exciting going forward to the next few weeks.

"Everyone in the squad deserves to be there. The competition is good and pushes us forward to be better as a squad."

  15. Experience will make captaincy easier - Morganpublished at 12:40 British Summer Time 21 August 2023

Jac Morgan and Dewi Lake are named as dual captains.

What a moment for the Ospreys pair who know each other so well from their region and playing together for Wales Under-20s.

    Morgan has told S4C:

"I got a phone call at about half eight this morning letting me know.

"I'm going to try and lead from the front, but there's a lot of experienced guys in the team so I don't need to talk a lot. Everyone will offer their opinion and help out so that makes the job easier."

  16. Only two scrum halvespublished at 12:39 British Summer Time 21 August 2023

Apologies in my haste I presumed Tomos Williams was the third scrum-half - but in fact there are only two.

Williams and Gareth Davies will share duties but no Kieran Hardy.

That looks like a big gamble.

We'll hear more from Gatland in a moment.

  17. The unlucky XVpublished at 12:36 British Summer Time 21 August 2023
