The climax of the Six Nations was also a thriller.

Champions Ireland retained their title on points difference after an extraordinary final day.

The last round of games concluded with England falling agonisingly short of the 26-point winning margin they needed as they beat France 55-35 in an epic.

Ireland made it a double by winning the Women's Six Nations title on points difference from France.

The best Rugby Union World Cup ever? It has to be to close.

A record 2.4 million tickets were sold for the event, one match attracted a world-record attendance of 89,000 and Japan stunned two-time champions South Africa to cause arguably the biggest upset in rugby union history.

England's calamitous display aside - where they were knocked out at the first hurdle - it was a tournament to remember.

Especially for eventual winners New Zealand.

"One of the things that I thought was amazing about Andy Murray's triumph was that at the moment of victory he went to go and commiserate with David Goffin, his opponent. Not everybody would have done that."

"GB have done it in the most spectacular style"

What a way to do it!

Andy Murray's stunning top spin lob was the winning moment as Great Britain won the Davis Cup for the first time since 1936  - and you can watch it again above.

The British number one was the dominant force for the fourth Davis Cup tie running as he became only the third man after John McEnroe and Mats Wilander to end a campaign with an 8-0 singles record.

Murray is on the shortlist for tonight's top award - having won it in 2013 - and the voting details are here.

  8. 'I apologise'published at 20:17

Tyson Fury tells Gary Lineker: "I've said a lot of things in the past, it's all a bit of tongue-in-cheek. If I've said anything in the past that's hurt anybody, then I apologise to anyone I've hurt, that wasn't the intention. I could have another thousand fights, nothing would top the Klitschko fight."

  9. Postpublished at 20:13 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2015

    Steve Bunce
BBC Sport boxing pundit on Radio 5 live

"Tyson Fury ended one of the finest reigns in boxing: Wladimir Klitschko has been at the top for 15 years. He reduces decent heavyweights to has-beens. Tyson Fury out-Klitscko'd Klitschko."

  10. 'The best since Ali'published at 20:12

    Boxing - 2015 in review

That's one way of describing ending the 11-year dominance of Wladimir Klitschko, I suppose. And how Tyson Fury - one of tonight's contenders - summed up his unbelievable and unexpected victory over the giant Ukrainian at the end of last month.

    Voting details here.

And, according to his trainer and uncle Peter Fury, the Briton's victory was the best since Muhammad Ali beat Sonny Liston in 1964.

"Tyson will be in boxing a long time and will cement his legacy," said Peter. "He is going to enjoy his reign at the top. It has been a hard road but now he has landed at the top of the hill."

Fury's nomination for the award has angered many, with more than 130,000 people signing a petition calling for the boxer to be removed over comments he made about women and gay people.

  13. The greatest ever?published at 20:07

    Athletics - 2015 in review

Mo Farah, one of tonight's contenders, enjoyed a gold-laden Worlds with victory in both the 5,000m and 10,000m to ensure he became the first man in history to pull off a distance 'triple-double'.

Brendan Foster, the Olympic medallist and BBC athletics commentator, put victory in the Olympics and two World Championships into perspective as he hailed Farah as "the greatest sportsman Britain has ever had".

Not bad for a man who finished ninth in the English schools cross-country championship at the age of 13...
