Equestrian sports often get overlooked but I would like to see Rosalind Canter nominated for SPOTY. 2023 has been a great year for her and her team of horses in Eventing. She and her horse Lordships Graffalo won Badminton Horse Trials (5 star event) and Gold medal (both individual and team) at European Championships plus with her horse Izilot DHI she won Etoiles de Pau (5 star event) and Blenheim Horse trials (4 star event)

  7. 'Help a brother out'published at 13:53 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2023

Geraint Thomas said he wanted to “help a brother out” after seeing Mark Cavendish light on team-mates in the closing stages of stage 21 at the Giro d’Italia.

"He's so special, 25 years, he's been one of my best friends you know," Cavendish said after the pair had shared an emotional embrace at the finish.

"More than a bike rider he's a good person, a good friend, a good team-mate, the most loyal guy you could get. That was pretty special."

Cavendish has delayed plans to retire after his Tour de France was ended by a crash in which he sustained a broken collarbone - and he will race in next year's race, where he will again aim to break the record of 34 Tour stage wins.

  9. Man City win treblepublished at 13:50 Greenwich Mean Time 11 December 2023

Manchester City became only the second ever English team to complete the Treble in 2023.

Pep Guardiola's side won the Champions League for the first time in the club's history after they defeated Inter Milan 1-0, adding to their Premier League and FA Cup triumphs.

Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United, in 1999, had stood as the only other English side to achieve that trophy haul.

The pair also faced each other in the final of the US Open singles event, where Hewett claimed his second Grand Slam singles title of 2023 on his way to ending the season as world number one.
