"This was a hugely dispiriting defeat for Laura Robson, who says her left wrist will need further treatment before her next tournament in Paris in two weeks' time. The British number one was horribly rusty and made 32 unforced errors in just 50 minutes: a legacy of playing her first full match since early October."

And, just like in the eighties, it's tough being a British tennis fan with interest in the women's singles ending swiftly. Indeed, it took less than three hours for Andy Murray to be left as the lone Briton in singles competition as Laura Robson and Heather Watson beaten in the first round.

Robson survived just 50 minutes in the scorching heat after being thumped 6-3 6-0 by 18th seed Kirsten Flipkens. In contrast, Watson put up a fight but ultimately went down 7-5 3-6 6-3 to Daniela Hantuchova in two hours and 34 minutes.

And those days are back! Although, the few who have cast their eyes on Melbourne Park's practice courts will already be aware of an eighties revival. The tight shorts are gone, and there's a bit more timber around the midriff, but Becker and Edberg have returned to the pinnacle of the sport - in a coaching capacity, of course.

What a decade the eighties was. Big hair, bold make-up and lots of bling. In what kind of world would we now be living were it not for the cultural impact of Knight Rider, Baywatch and The Golden Girls?

Ah, the breakdancing and those Teenage Ninja Turtles and, let's not forget, there was volleying, lots of it, as a golden-haired Stefan Edberg and a nimble Boris Becker dived, lunged and tumbled their way to greatness while clad in what is now vintage sportswear. Aye, it was a golden age.
