Andy Murray has been speaking about his straight-sets win over Feliciano Lopez. Here's what the world number four had to say: "Today was a big step up for me. Feliciano is a top 30 player and is a tricky opponent to play.

"I know I have a good record against him, but it doesn't change the fact he's not an easy guy to play against. He's a very different type of opponent to what you normally face, so it was a good test for me, and I did well."

Sports Illustrated journalist Courtney Nguyen: "Azarenka v Stephens should be a good match. Stephens has been slow starting but she's had a tough draw and is a little bit more battle-tested this year, which she wasn't when she faced Serena Williams last year."

Sports Illustrated journalist Courtney Nguyen: "Meusburger doesn't play the style of game that succeeds on the women's tour these days. Without the power to intimidate or push back Azarenka back, it's going to be a quick finish."

  9. Azarenka breakspublished at 09:07 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2014

Meusburger was a long shot in this match for a reason and those reasons presenting themselves during this match. The Austrian makes holding serve seem as difficult as solving a Sudoku puzzle blindfolded. A sweetly-struck forehand down the line for a 0-30 lead in Azarenka's favour and the second seed quickly has three break points. The Austrian saves one... Meusburger fighting, battling, unwilling to say die... the pair slugging it out from the baseline until Meusburger steps up with a backhand volley. Two break points saved. What happened to the third? Well, a forehand volley from Azarenka ended the Meusburger revival.

A crisp backhand winner flies from Azarenka's racquet as the Belarusian collects the third of three easy points. Meusburger, again, unable to negotiate the barrier, her backhand proving to be her enemy, and it's peasy hold to love.

  11. Postpublished at 09:00 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2014

Meusburger waving the white flag as a sliced backhand long presents Azarenka three break points and the Austrian gives up with a whimper. A double fault and this match is only going to end one way.

  12. Postpublished at 08:57 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2014

Meusburger failed to hold serve in the opening set but did contribute to an enjoyable 30 minutes or so. The Azarenka serve needs fine tuning if she is to win this tournament, but her shot-making is on song. A thumping forehand into the corner ends a 17-shot rally and a backhand winner down the line brings up a 40-0 lead. A puff of the cheeks from the second seed, though, as she misses with a forehand. Another error on the forehand for 40-30 before the Azarenka backhand wraps things up.

  13. GAME AND FIRST SETpublished at 08:50 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2014

The net is proving to be a hindrance to Meusburger, which is its job I guess, and a backhand into the tape brings up double break points for Azarenka. She wastes one, twisting her face in anguish after doing so, and then fails to grab the second break point. Deuce. A touch of good fortune for Meusburger as her forehand clips the net and she lifts both arms in the air to apologise to Azarenka. The defending champion ratches a third break point and Meusburger folds, pushing a forehand long.

The Belarusian volleying with aplomb as another drop volley allows her to level at 15-15. Meusburger standing up to her more illustrious opponent, however, and is refusing to be bullied. The underdog sends Azarenka scampering along the baseline, forcing the defending champion to net and slip 15-30 behind. But the Meusburger forehand falters and Azarenka closes in on the first set.

  15. Azarenka breakspublished at 08:41 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2014

Azarenka has faced Meusburger once before and that ended in a straight-sets victory in Marbella in 2010. It will probably be a similar ending to this match. Soft hands from Azarenka as a drop volley by the net earns her two break points. Meusburger bravely fights back before Azarenka sets up a third break point, and this time the Austrian goes long from the baseline.

The Arena now filling up, the ticket holders perhaps have heard whispers that this game has started brightly. Another double fault blights Azarenka's game, which allows her opponent to level at 30-30, but the defending champion pulls through, Meusburger directing a backhand long on the final point.

Azarenka, riled, advances to the net and puts away a volley for two break points and her Australian opponent can't stand the heat. Nerves get the better of her and Meusburger goes long with a forehand.

From 40-0 to 40-30 as Meusburger, the world number 49, attacks the Azarenka serve. The Belarusian has gone off the boil slightly, spraying a forehand wide for deuce. The second seed can rely on that drive volley of hers, however, floating towards the net and forcing Meusburger to just watch the ball fly by.

An unexpected twist, though as Azarenka double faults and sends a backhand long for break point. A nervy rally ensues, backhand to backhand, and - ooh - Meusburger came close, her backhand clipping the net and drifting agonisingly wide. A second break point comes Meusburger's way, she sends Azarenka sprinting to her backhand side and the defending champion nets. Cripes.

  19. Azarenka breakspublished at 08:18 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2014

A driving volley from Azarenka ends an entertaining rally for a 30-0 lead and the second seed recovers from a wild forehand into the tramlines to come out on top in another enthralling rally. From a spectator's point of view, the early signs are encouraging as the pair move each other hither and tither before Meusburger drags a backhand wide. Two break points Azarenka. Meusburger crumbles, an iffy forehand doing the damage, and the defending champion has clicked into gear.

Moving swiftly on, however, Victoria Azarenka and her opponent Yvonne Meusburger have finished their warm-up and are about to rip it up.
